Scientists call for accurate regional data on mangroves

Dehradun, August 25: Forest scientists today called for gathering accurate regional data on climate change to study its impact on the mangroves in Indian sub-continent.

“In the absence of accurate regional data on climate change, it is difficult to conclude its impact on short and long term basis on the mangroves,” noted scientist H S Singh said during a workshop, “Response to forestry sector to climate change,” inaugurated today.

Jinnah was committed to undivided India: Sudarshan

Indore, August 25: Former RSS chief S Surdarshan here today said Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah was committed to undivided India.

On being asked if he considered the Muslim League leader secular, he said, “Jinnah had many facets. He was once associated with Lokmanya Tilak and was totally committed to undivided India.”

Two arrested for burglary in tent house

New Delhi, August 25: Two men were arrested in the capital for allegedly stealing Rs 3.25 lakh and credit cards from a tent house where they were employed, police said today.

Anand Thakur (35) and Brahamdev (19), both hailing from Bihar’s Katihar, were caught on Friday, a day after they committed burglary at Kakkar Tent House.

Police have recovered Rs 80,000 and stolen credit cards from them, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

During investigation, it was learnt that few employees who had worked at the tent house could be involved in the theft.

RIL calls ADAG ad campaign ‘malicious’; wants it nipped

New Delhi, August 25: Reliance Industries has hit back at the Anil Ambani group for unleashing a “malicious, mischievous, baseless and ill-informed” propaganda against its gas field costs and said the campaign by people with little experience of large projects should be nipped in the bud.

RIL said capital expenditure for KG-D6 fields increased from USD 2.47 billion in 2003 to USD 8.83 billion due to a 2.5 times increase in reserves, trebling of production facilities, doubling of peak production, hike in number of wells, field life and inflation in equipment and services industry.

Obama spokesman announces interrogation unit

Washington, August 25: President Barack Obama has approved creation of a new, special terrorism-era interrogation unit to be supervised by the White House, a top aide said today, further distancing his administration from President George W Bush’s detainee policies.

The new unit does not mean the CIA is now out of the interrogation business, deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton told reporters covering the vacationing Obama in Massachusetts.

Oil near USD 75 per barrel on economic optimism

Houston, August 25: Oil prices approached USD 75 a barrel today for the first time in 10 months amid growing optimism that the world’s economies are on the mend.

Benchmark crude for October delivery rose USD 74.62 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Oil last topped USD 75 in October.

Natural gas rebounded strongly from new seven-year lows today, though prices remained well below USD 3 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Sri Lankan authorities request to hand over criminals to them

Rameswaram, August 25: Three Sri Lankan Tamil youths, rescued by Coast Guard officials after they were found stranded in sea near here on July 31, were criminals wanted in several cases, including dacoity and burglary, by the Sri Lankan police.

The Indian Coast Guard had received a request from Sri Lankan police that the youths Anushan, Sharadbabu and Tirukumarn be handed over to them as various crimnal cases were pending against them in Jaffna.

Police were discussing with officials regarding formalities for handing over the three, official sources said.

8 suspected swine flu case admitted in AP Chest hospital

Hyderabad, August 25: Eight suspected swine flu victims were today admitted to the Andhra Pradesh Chest hospital here, hospital sources said.

Eight patients, including two patients who were home quarantined and had completed two days of treatment were recalled as there was no improvement in their health, AP Chest Hospital Superintendent Dr S V Prasad told PTI.

Besides, a patient was transferred from King Koti Hospital in the city, was admitted at the AP Chest Hospital today, Prasad said.

HC asks doctor to stop practicing

Chennai, August 25: Madras High Court today directed a city doctor practicing Indian system of medicines not to practice Siddha or Ayurvedic treatment.

Justice K N Basha also restrained Vijayakumar, who was arrested on July 16 for allegedly charging exorbitant fees to cure patients but not curing them, from running nursing home in the city either himself or through his relatives or others until production of authenticated documents regarding his qualifications and registration as a practitioner before an investigating officer.

Balakrishnan should make public his own assets: former CJI

New Delhi, August 25: Expressing unhappiness over the ongoing debate on judges’ assets declaration issue, former Chief Justice of India J S Verma today said CJI K G Balakrishnan should cut short “unsavoury” debate on the issue by making public his own assets, claiming that most of the judges are ready for it.

“Many judges have talked to me personally, both of the Supreme Court and High Court. They have all said that they want to do it…I only wish that the CJI cuts short this unsavoury debate and makes a declaration himself,” the former CJI said in an interview to the CNN-IBN.

NHPC to develop power projects on Narmada canals

Ahmedabad, August 24: Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL), which implements the crucial Narmada project in Gujarat, has decided to engage Central PSU National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) to design, develop and implement the river bed power houses to be put up on the canals.

“We have decided to rope in NHPC for putting up power houses on the Narmada canals. SSNNL and NHPC will soon sign an agreement in this regard,” a senior SSNNL official told PTI.

Air crash averted at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, August 24: Two private planes took off almost simultaneously from the same runway at the Mumbai airport Sunday morning, narrowly averting an air disaster, an official said Sunday.

A probe has been ordered into the incident by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the official said.

According to a DGCA official, the incident occurred when the Air Traffic Control reportedly gave clearance to the pilots of the two chartered aircraft to take off around the same time.

AMC issues ten quarantine notices to IIM-A

Ahmedabad, August 24: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued ten quarantine notices to premier B-school IIM-A after three of its students tested positive for swine flu, an official said.

So far three IIM-A students have tested positive for H1N1 virus.

“We have issued ten quarantine notices to IIM-A that enumerate all the preventive measures to be adopted after two more students on the campus tested positive for swine flu recently,” AMC Medical Health Officer S P Kulkarni said.

Policemen exchange fire with Naxals in Gadchiroli

Nagpur, August 24: An exchange of fire took place between police and a group of axals in Sonsuri forest in Kurkheda taluk of Gadchiroli district this evening, police said.

One 303, and four 12 bore rifles, apart from some Naxal literature, were recovered from the spot, they said.

The exact number of Naxals injured could not be known immediately. However, no policeman was injured in the encounter, they said.

Hyderabad, August 24: Super Specialty Hospitals Group, Wockhardt Hospitals has signed an agreement to divest eight hospitals, to Fortis Healthcare, for Rs 909 crore.

The divested hospitals consist of four super specialty hospitals, three satellite hospitals and one medical institute in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata, a press release said.

Four more succumb, swine flu toll mounts to 74

New Delhi, August 24: Four persons, including an infant and a businessman, succumbed to the dreaded swine flu, pushing the countrywide death count from the H1NI pandemic to 74 even as 137 more contracted the infection since last evening.

Two fatatlities occurred in Karnataka and one each in Maharashtra and Gujarat as the number of those afflicted with disease topped the 2,900 mark.

A two-and-a-half-year-old child, who was admitted to a hospital in Pune, the worst-hit by the virus, on August 21 after she tested positive, died last night, health officials said.

Woman, daughter drown in underground water tank in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, August 24: A woman and her two-year-old daughter drowned in an underground water tank in their residence in Vatva area of the city, police said today.

The incident occurred late last night, when Saraswati Chauhan (22) allegedly jumped into the underground tank of her house in Gayatrinagar society in Vatva, to save her daughter Sonu who accidentally fell into the tank, they said.

According to police, Saraswati’s husband Anand was at work when the incident happened.

Assistant SI held for drinking liquor in police station

Rajkot, August 24: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been arrested for consuming liquor in police station, police said today.

Mahendrasinh Jadeja, attached to Gondal police station, along with other Constables, was found in drunken state during a surprise visit by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) A C Jadeja on Saturday night, they said.

The Constables managed to run away, but the ASI was apprehended.

The DySP himself lodged a complaint against the ASI and asked the police officials to nab the Constables, police said.
