Village ‘witches’ beaten in India

Jharkhand, October 21: Five Muslim widows branded as ‘witches’ by villagers and a local cleric were paraded naked, beaten and forced to eat human excrement in a remote village of Deoghar district in India.

Local police said the victims were Muslim widows who had been labelled as witches by a local cleric.

The incident occurred on Sunday in a remote village in Deoghar district.

Correspondents say the abuse of women who are branded as witches is common, but rare footage of the incident has caused outrage across India.

Engineer abducted by NDFB militants: Police

Kokrajhar, October 21: Assam police today said that Andhra Pradesh engineer P Krishna Rao was kidnapped by NDFB militants and all possibilities are being explored to secure his release.

“We have established that the kidnapping was the handiwork of anti-talk faction of NDFB. We are exploring all possibilities to get Rao released,” Kokrajhar superintendent of police P K Dutta said.

Raju unwilling to undergo tests

Hyderabad, October 21: B Ramalinga Raju, the jailed founder-chairman of SatyamComputer Services, is not willingto go through the polygraph and brain mapping tests to be conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“The investigating agency is trying to conduct the tests without seeking the consent of the accused. The accused have not given any consent to the investigators to conduct the tests,” senior advocate Prakash Reddy, arguing on behalf of Raju, said on Tuesday.

Central teams to assess flood, drought damage

Hyderabad, October 21: Two Central teams, each comprising eight members, will soon visit the State to assess the damage caused to crops and properties by floods and drought and recommend assistance from the National Calamities Contingency Fund (NCCF).

A communication to this effect was received by the State government on Tuesday following submission of two separate reports to the Centre on the loss caused by these calamities.

The men armed with pistols, knives and iron rods raided the farm house owned by Atar Singh Bhati in Kathera area under Dadri police station of Greater Noida, overpowered and tied up all the male members and took all the available cash and jewelry from their quarters.

Delhi police informer shot dead in Noida

Noida, October 20: A man working as informer to the Delhi Police was shot dead by a gang of car robbers in the Sector-61 area of Noida Tuesday afternoon, when he was leading the police to them, police said.

Pramod Kumar had led a Delhi Police team to the suspected hideout of a car lifting gang in Sector-61. As instructed by the police, he went alone to the flat to call up the robbers to help police apprehend them.

Praful Patel elected as AIFF president

New Delhi, October 20: Praful Patel was elected unopposed as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Tuesday and the Union Minister wasted no time in listing out his priorities to take Indian football to world standards.

RIL leads fall in markets; Sensex down 103 points

Mumbai, October 20: Erasing early gains, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today closed down by 103 points on profit-booking by funds in blue-chip stocks.

The 30-share Sensex settled the day lower 103 points at 17,223.01. The key index touched the day’s high of 17,457.26 in continuation of gains in the last two sessions before registering the fall.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 27.35 points to 5,114.45, after rising to 5,181.95.

A weak opening in European stock markets fuelled selling among overseas and general investors.

Tata Nano catches fire in Lucknow

Lucknow, October 20: A newly purchased Tata Nano car that was parked in a parking lot in the posh Hazratganj locality of Lucknow caught fire Tuesday evening, its owner said.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, said R.H. Rizvi, who bought the car in July from a Lucknow based dealer.

“I parked my car in the parking lot of a shopping complex and went to buy some gifts. I was shocked when the parking attendant came rushing to me within 10 minutes saying that the car is on fire”, Rizvi told IANS.

New Delhi, October 20: Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni Tuesday unveiled a plan for complete digitalisation of television in India with a likely approval of a satellite-based cable distribution platform soon.

“There should be a sunset hour for complete digitalization,” Soni said at an interactive discussion on ‘Government Regulation or Self-Regulation’ that was organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

Before the year is out, the cabinet is expected to approve HITS (Headend In the Sky), she said.

Explosives used in Margao blasts are similar to Maha blasts

Panaji, October 20: The Goa police have unearthed a strong link between Malgonda Patil, the main accused who died in Friday’s Margao blast and those accused in planting crude bombs in cinemas in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Panvel last year.

Patil had been in touch with Vikram Vinay Bhave, arrested in the Maharashtra cases, DIG Ravindra Yadav said, emphasising that the explosives used in all the cases bore strong similarities..

Five swine flu deaths take India’s toll to 420

New Delhi, October 20: Five swine flu deaths were reported in India Tuesday, taking the toll due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 420, health authorities said here.

Also, 89 new cases were reported in the country, taking the total number of people affected with the flu to 12,969.

All the deaths had occurred earlier, but the laboratory confirmations of the viral infections came Tuesday, officials said.

Of the five deaths, two occurred in Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. With this the toll due to the virus in the state has touched 44.
