FPA: Israel using ‘pirated’ footage to defend raid

Jerusalem, June 03: The Israeli military’s YouTube site is using ‘pirated’ footage confiscated from journalists on board a Turkish vessel in a bid to defend its botched flotilla raid, a press body charged on Thursday.

“The Foreign Press Association (FPA) strongly condemns the use of photos and video material shot by foreign journalists, now being put out by the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) spokesman’s office as ‘captured material’,” a statement from the organisation said.

Israeli raid puts Obama between rock, hard place

Washington, June 03: The Obama team was caught Wednesday between a rock and a hard place as it tried to navigate between key allies Israel and Turkey following an Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound Turkish ship, analysts said.

Turkey is NATO member and expects backing from its allies, including the US.

Aid activists accuse Israel of indiscriminate killings

Istanbul, June 03: Hundreds of Turkish activists from the Gaza aid flotilla attacked by Israeli commandos returned home to a heroes’ welcome Thursday and their leaders accused Israel of carrying out indiscriminate killings.

Organisers of the aid fleet also said the toll of nine dead given by Israel was too low. Facing major protests over Monday’s raid, Israel meanwhile rejected a UN Human Rights Council move to set up an international inquiry into the raid.

Australian photographer shot with Israeli Taser gun

Sydney, June 03: An Australian journalist on board a Gaza-bound aid ship said Israeli commando boats had circled their flotilla like “hyenas hunting animals in the night” before his colleague was shot with a stun gun.

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Paul McGeough and photographer Kate Geraghty were released from Israeli detention and deported to Turkey Thursday, and said they were slowly recovering from their ordeal.

“We’re fine, we’re both fine,” McGeough told the Herald’s website from Turkey.

Ibrahim Lee Murray, 32, was sentenced on Tuesday in the city of Sale on various charges including membership of a criminal gang, theft with an armed weapon, wearing an illegal uniform and kidnapping, the source said.

Mogadishu, June 03: At least 21 Somali civilians were killed Thursday and 59 wounded in fierce Mogadishu clashes pitting government forces backed by African Union troops against Islamist insurgents, medics said.

The fighting broke out when newly-trained government forces backed by the soldiers of the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) apparently launched a major offensive to recapture key Mogadishu neighbourhoods.

The cyclone, rated at a factor of 3.5 on a scale of five, was moving northwestwardly at a speed of eight kilometres (five miles) an hour. Winds were blowing at a 180 kilometres (112 miles) an hour.

Hotels along the east coast of the sultanate have been evacuated, the ministry of tourism said, and the residents of Masirah island were airlifted to safer areas.

Ankara, June 03: Iraqi Kurd leader Massud Barzani arrived in Turkey Wednesday on a five-day official visit, just days after Turkish Kurdish rebels killed six soldiers in a rocket attack on a naval base.

BSNL EPINs worth Rs 1.40 crore missing!

Hyderabad, June 03: In what looks like a major scam, compact discs containing secret electronic permanent index numbers (EPINs) worth more than Rs 1.40 crore have gone missing from the office of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited here in the city.

Though they were stolen a couple of months back, BSNL assistant general manager A Ratna Mohan Rao lodged a complaint with the Saifabad police only on Wednesday.

BSNL officials and police suspect it to be an “inside job.” The CDs have gone missing from the salesII department at the Telephone Bhavan in Adarsh Nagar.

Will never forgive the attack: Turkey Prez

Turkey, June 03: Turkey’s ties with Israel suffered “irreparable” damage and “will never be the same” after the deadly raid on aid ships bound for Gaza, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said today.

“From now on, Turkish-Israeli ties will never be the same. This incident has left an irreparable and deep scar” on
relations, he said in televised remarks.

Gul added that Monday’s attack by Israeli forces, in which eight Turks and a US national of Turkish origin were
killed, “is not an issue that can be forgotten or be covered up.”

I won’t give up: Lalit Modi

New Delhi, June 03: The suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) Chief, Lalit Modi Thursday asserted that there has been no match-fixing in the three editions of Twenty20 league.

He further insisted that the integrity of the franchise owners and the players can not be questioned.

“There is absolutely no match-fixing in the IPL and the allegations being floated are just motivated by people to find ways and means of undermining all over the world what we have done,” he said.
