Obama to visit India in November

Washington, June 04: US President Barack Obama announced Thursday that he has accepted an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to visit India in November this year.

“I am delighted to announce tonight that I plan to visit India in early November,” Xinhua quoted Obama as saying said in a speech at the reception for the US-India Strategic Dialogue held in Washington.

Manmohan Singh had offered the invitation when he visited Washington in 2009.

Japan cabinet resigns en masse, party election begins

Tokyo, June 04: Japan’s cabinet resigned en masse Friday, and the ruling Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) started the process of party presidential election, the winner of which will become the next prime minister of the country.

Yukio Hatoyama and his cabinet members resigned en masse in the morning, Xinhua reported.

Deputy Prime Minister Naoto Kan, 63, is leading the race. He is being challenged by Shinji Tarutoko, 50, a lawmaker who chairs the House of Representatives Environment Committee.

Jairam Ramesh gets RS ticket

New Delhi, June 04: Environment minister Jairam Ramesh was among one of the four who were given tickets to contest the Rajya Sabha elections from Andhra Pradesh by Congress.

Messrs N Janardhana Reddy, V Hanumantha Rao, J D Seelam too have also been renominated. Former minister for women and child development Renuka Chowdhury, whose name was being touted as a possible candidate, lost out in the race.

1,400 prisoners released in China

Beijing, June 04: Around 1,400 prisoners have been released from jail on medical grounds, before their sentences were over in China’s Jiangxi province, an official said.

Of the 1,400 prisoners released Thursday, 632 are elderly, 160 are handicapped and 604 are severely ill, Ma Chengzu, director of the the judicial department of Jiangxi province was quoted as saying by chinanews.com.cn.

The prisoners were released as part of a sentence mitigation programme started in June 2009 by the department.

Best time to release ‘Milenge Milenge’

Mumbai, June 04: His film might be six years too late but director Satish Kaushik feels that this is the right time to release his long pending “Milenge Milenge”, with Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, who have since climbed the success ladder to become big time stars.

“It is not a question of delay. Delays can’t mar a film,” said Kaushik. ” ‘Milenge Milenge’ is the best picture for today because that time they (Shahid-Kareena) were not such big stars,” Kaushik told IANS in a telephonic interview from Mumbai.

China bans meat, milk import from Japan

Beijing, June 04: China has banned meat and milk products from Japan and travellers have been advised not to bring such items into the country, following a ban due to the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, authorities said.

China stopped importing milk powder, milk, beef and cattle-related products from Japan at the end of April 2010, since the start of the outbreak in the Japanese prefecture of Miyazaki April 20.

My image has changed after two directorial hits: Sajid Khan

Mumbai, June 04: With both his films, “Heyy Babyy” and “Housefull”, declared super hits, anchor-turned-director Sajid Khan feels he might have outgrown his image of the funny-guy-next-door and may not be able to fit the comic host role any more.

“Success is a very important thing. Till now people perceived me as a friendly anchor, a compere who used to crack jokes, a boy-next-door kind of a person. But after my directorial ventures, my image has changed. In fact, I feel I won’t be able to fit in that comic, host image now,” Sajid told IANS in an interview.

Farid Tanasha, Shahid Azmi, killed with similar bullets

Mumbai, June 04: The police detectives probing the sensational killing of gangster Farid Tanasha said that such meticulous execution of the shootout would not have been possible without the help of an insider.

Tanasha, an alleged henchman of the Chhota Rajan gang, was shot dead at his Tilak Nagar residence on Wednesday night.

The initial findings hint that the Bharat Nepali gang could be behind the killing.

The bullets found at Tanasha’s home were similar to the ones used in killing lawyer Shahid Azmi in February. Nepali has owned up to the killing of Shahid Azmi.

Akhtar, Malik passed fitness tests

Lahore, June 04: Pakistan included paceman Shoaib Akhtar and former captain Shoaib Malik in its 15-man squad for the Asia Cup to be played in Sri Lanka later this month, selectors announced Thursday.

The 34-year-old Akhtar was found fit for the June 15-24 four-nation tournament after selectors and top Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials carried out checks on Wednesday. A medical report has also declared him fit.

New Delhi: Get ready to pay more for petrol, diesel and LPG. After dilly-dallying for months, the government is said to have mustered the political courage to do what till some time back was considered impossible: free petrol and, more importantly, diesel prices.

An empowered group of ministers headed by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee is scheduled to meet on Monday to consider the Kirit Parikh Committee report, which calls for freeing petrol and diesel prices from government control.

Lt Gen Nanda has not resigned: Army

New Delhi, June 04: A top army official was today facing allegations of misconduct with an officer’s wife which were being investigated but the army said he has not been asked to resign.

59-year-old Lt General A K Nanda, engineer-in-chief, has been accused by the wife of a junior officer of molesting her during a trip to Isreal last month.

Reacting to reports of Nanda’s alleged involvement in misconduct, army spokesman said “there are some allegations”.

Transformer explosion kills at least 100

Dhaka, June 04: At least 77 people were burnt alive, mostly women and children, while 50 others critically wounded on Thursday night as a deadly fire raced through several apartment complexes in Dhaka, apparently after a transformer explosion, officials said.

“Rescuers so far retrieved 77 bodies, mostly children and women, while at least 50 others were struggling for life at (state—run) Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with critical burn injuries,” the private RTV channel reported.

Improving ties with India a ‘personal priority’ for Hillary Clinton

New Delhi, June 04: Setting the tone for the first-ever Indo-US strategic dialogue in Washington on Thursday, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said in her opening remarks that improving ties with India was a “personal priority”.

The decision to upgrade the dialogue to a higher political level was made during Clinton’s visit to India last summer.

Cash, gold stolen from trader’s house

New Delhi, June 04: A 48-year-old Noida businessman was on Wednesday night overpowered inside his home by four men who took away cash and jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh.

Rajesh Gupta, an automobile dealer who lives in Sector 12, claimed he was alone in his house, when the incident happened. “I received a phone call asking if I was at home. After 15 minutes, two men entered my home as I had kept the door open due to the heat. Two more men followed them soon after,” said Gupta.

Shahzad’s case postponed for three weeks

London, June 04: Times Square car bomb suspect Faisal Shahzad’s case has been postponed for three weeks until June 21 to allow him to speak with US authorities about the terror plot.

Shahzad, Pakistani-born American accused of planting a car bomb in Times Square, through his lawyer agreed to waive his right to indictment for another three weeks. US Magistrate Judge Theodore Katz signed an order granting the delay.

Mumbai, June 04: Infant tests HIV positive, dies a few months after adoption; woman says she paid Rs 1 lakh to city orphanage for child Anita Arun Yadav adopted a newborn boy in March last year and named him Ved. In November Ved died, a few days after Yadav learnt he was HIV positive.

Mumbai-based Yadav said before she got the child, she had to give Rs 1 lakh to the adoption centre, Gurukul Godavari Balakashram at Nagpur Chawl in Yerawada. The organisation has its main branch in Mumbai.

The orphanage president, Mathew Rayappa Yanmal (39), was arrested yesterday and booked for cheating.

24-year-old arrested for marrying 13 year girl

Mumbai, June 04: A 24-year old man has been arrested from a posh locality in Aundh and booked for marrying two minors.

The move followed a complaint registered by his first wife’s mother at the Chatushrungi police station on Tuesday.

Harshal Javalekar, the arrested man, runs a travel and car rental company and got married for the second time last month.

Javalekar and three members of his family were arrested after the mother of his first bride, Preeti (name changed to protect identity), blew the whistle on his alliances.

Aid activists welcomed in Turkey after Israel ordeal

Ankara, June 03: Hundreds of activists from the Gaza-bound aid flotilla seized by Israeli commandos arrived in Turkey Thursday.

A crowd of about a thousand people welcomed the three planes carrying 488 activists at Istanbul airport as they arrived in the small hours of the morning.

The planes were also carrying the bodies of nine activists killed when Israeli commandos took control of the six aid vessels in Monday’s pre-dawn operation, deputy prime minister Bulent Arinc told journalists at the airport.

Turkey: ties with Israel ‘will never be the same’

Ankara, June 03: Turkey’s ties with Israel suffered “irreparable” damage and “will never be the same” after the deadly raid on aid ships bound for Gaza, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Thursday.

“From now on, Turkish-Israeli ties will never be the same. This incident has left an irreparable and deep scar” on relations, he said in televised remarks.

Gul added that Monday’s attack by Israeli forces, in which eight Turks and a US national of Turkish origin were killed, “is not an issue that can be forgotten… or be covered up.”
