Passive smoking can increase platelet activation in healthy people leading to formation of blood clots which can damage many organs including the kidneys, heart and brain.

Researchers from the Erciyes University in Turkey found that passive smoking increased levels of platelet activation, lactate and carbon monoxide in the blood. Platelet activation is indicated by Mean platelet volume (MPV) that is increased in acute thrombotic events.

In thrombotic events, microscopic clots are formed in the small blood vessels.

Human lungs can sweep out intruders

Human lungs rely on sticky mucus to expel foreign matter, including toxic and infectious agents during a cold or an allergy that causes a running nose and a wet cough, says a study.

The study by Brian Button and colleagues from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, helps to explain how human airways clear such mucus out of the lungs.

The findings may give researchers a better understanding of what goes wrong in many human lung diseases, such as cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, the journal Science reported.

Coal block allocation: Both Houses adjourned till 2 pm

Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 2 pm on Monday as the BJP refused to allow Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to make a statement on coal block allocation.

Earlier too, both Houses were adjourned till noon after slogan-shouting BJP members disrupted proceedings compelling the presiding officers to order the adjournment.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kept up a chant demanding the Prime Minister’s resignation, effectively drowning out all attempts by him to speak. His statement was finally laid on the table of the two respective houses.

Man ends life by hanging

(Siasat News): A man committed suicide at Gagan Pahad in Shamshabad RGI police limits. According to police, B Srinivas, 45, resident of Gagan Pahad and a driver by profession, had complained about the chest pain.

However, the pain increased yesterday and became unbearable for him. When he could not bear the pain any longer, he took the extreme step of ending his life by hanging.

Since the loan is taken on high interest the small businessmen fail to make lump-sum payment. It has been told that sometimes the interest is as high as 20 to 30 percent for short duration.

Hindus not migrating: Pakistani panel

Hindus are not migrating to India and giving up their Pakistani citizenship, said a committee that was formed to look into reports of mass migration of the minority community.

It recommended that those behind conversion of Hindu girls should be exposed regardless of their party affiliation. “It’s in no way migration. It’s not easy to get Indian citizenship. People are settling in countries like the UAE, Canada, UK or America but they have not given up their Pakistani citizenship. They have left for greener pastures,” Dawn Monday quoted a source saying.

BJP sticks to ‘quit PM’ demand, parliament adjourned

Both houses of parliament were adjourned Monday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) persisted with its demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over coal block allocation.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned till 12 noon soon after they met as the BJP raised slogans demanding the prime minister’s resignation.

In the Rajya Sabha, members paid tributes to Chowdhary Ram Sevak, a former member, who has passed away. Chairman Hamid Ansari later complimented the Indian cricket team for winning the under-19 World Cup.

Pakistani PM faces SC on contempt order

Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf Monday appeared in the Supreme Court to face a show-cause notice for failing to implement the order to write to the Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Jostled by crowds, Ashraf waved before stepping inside the court building.

The apex court had issued the notice Aug 8.

The order said it was unfortunate that the prime minister had failed to implement the court’s directives.

Kejriwal to protest in Bhopal on Tuesday

Alleging that there is no “Opposition” left in the country, activist Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said he will sit on a dharna outside the residence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Bhopal to protest the police action against his supporters there.

He alleged people were “beaten up very badly” in Bhopal while protesting against corruption by Chouhan.

Power cut for five hours – Public worried

Libyan interior minister resigns

Libyan Interior Minister Fawzi Abdelali resigned Sunday after being attacked for the performance of the security forces during a surge of violence, Al-Jazeera TV reported.

The country’s security forces were criticised for double car bombings that killed two people on the day Muslims celebrated the feast of Eid-ul-Fitr a week ago in Tripoli and attacks on several Muslim shrines in the past few days, Xinhua reported.

The criticism has come mainly from the General National Congress, which Sunday accused the interior ministry’s High Security Committee of being lax.

Israeli missile kills militant in Egypt

A motorcycle-borne militant was killed in Egypt by a missile launched from an Israeli plane, Xinhua reported.

The militant — identified as Ibrahim Nasser, a Bedouin — was hit while he was riding a motorbike in Rafah area, 15 km from the Egypt-Israel border.

The man was arrested a few days ago by the Egyptian army but was released later.

Officials told Xinhua Nasser was involved in killing some Israeli tourists near the border and was listed as terrorist in Israel.
