Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy said that power is an absolute necessity. In view of the public interest and absolute necessity for energy, he said the Government will do its best to sort out the problems of the thermal and mini hydel power projects immediately and asked the officials to speed up the process in this regard.

Rains Lash Capital – Traffic Disrupted

Many parts of the Capital experienced heavy rain this evening, as a result of which traffic came to a standstill at some places. Rains lashed Ameerpet, Koti, Dilsukhnagar, Hayathnagar, Himayathnagar and others areas.

As a result of the rains, vehicular traffic was disrupted on Ameerpet, Khairatabad, Somajiguda and other centres for some time. Many main roads were water-logged. (NSS)

Govt To Enter Liquor Retail Business From Sept 1

The State Government has decided to enter the liquor trade. To start with, 70 liquor shops would be opened by the Government in ten Districts, from September 1. Of these, 39 would be in Greater Hyderabad limits.

The Government was thinking of appointing the retired employees to run the liquor shops. Each shop would have three staff members. Notification was issued for taking shops on rent.

HMDA Asked To Stop Eviction Of Colonies

Dr Nageshwar, MLC, has demanded the HMDA authorities to immediately stop the illegal acquisition of lands and withdraw the notification issued in this direction.

Speaking at a round table organized by the Hyderabad Residents Forum here today, he criticized the attempts being made by HMDA to get the Balakrishna colony, Saikrishna colony, Venkatsai Colony and Nagarjuna colony vacated and acquire the lands in the name of public purposes and development. He demanded that this move should be stopped forthwith.

FEE: HC Adjourns Hearing On State Petition To Tuesday

The High Court today adjourned to Tuesday the hearing on State government’s petition challenging the orders of the Single Bench on the students Fee fixation.

The Single Bench had fixed the students fee at Rs 50,200 to be collected by those Engineering Colleges which have not submitted affidavits in the court. Aggrieved by the order, the State government has challenged the decision of the single bench judge.

Meanwhile, the managements of another five engineering colleges filed petitions in the High Court challenging the government’s decision on fee fixation. (NSS)

TRS Demands Cancellation Of EPC Policy In Work Tenders

TRS leader in Assembly Etela Rajender has alleged that the State government was depriving works to small contractors by introducing EPC policy in the contract system.

Speaking to the media here on Monday, the TRS leader charged the government with conspiring to give all tenders to big contractors and helping them to earn several crores of rupees through this EPC policy and starving the small contractors of works.

EAMCET Counseling Begins

At last, EAMCET counseling began on Monday. Verification of certificates would be done from the first to 15,000 rank. For this purpose, 53 counseling centers were set up.

Activists of Students Federation of India (SFI) staged protest at the counseling center at Nagarjuna University, Guntur demanding implementation of uniform free structure in all colleges.

Freedom Fighter Rama Rao Doke Passes Away

The PCC President Botcha Satyanarayana condoled the sad demise of Ram Rao Doke, a veteran freedom fighter and former Deputy Mayor of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, who passed away last night at the age of 95 years.

Botcha, in a condolence message today, said that Rama rao Doke had taken active part in the Hyderabad State Liberation Movement in the year of 1947-48, sentenced to death in Pochampalli bomb case, and he was saved from death due to the Police Action in September, 1948 by Central Government.

Minister for Civil Supplies Sridhar Babu has warned the officials and ration shop dealers of stern action if they failed to cooperate in weeding out bogus ration cards.

Speaking to the media here today, the Minister said that three laklhs of bogus ration cards were identified in the State. If the officials and dealers failed to cooperate in weeding out bogus rations from now on, stringent action would be taken against them, he said.

TDP MLAs sit in protest at AP CM’s office over power crisis in state

TDP legislators protested at the chief minister’s office after allegedly failing to get a concrete assurance from the government on steps taken to address current power shortage in Andhra Pradesh.

TDP MLAs met chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy this evening over the ongoing power shortage at his office in the secretariat, but reportedly insisted on an assurance from him on addressing the issue, TDP sources said.

However, they continued to stay put in the conference hall at the CM office after they allegedly failed to get the assurance, even as Reddy left the Secretariat.

Police officer alleges harassment by senior cop in AP

Rampachodavaram Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Navin Kumar has accused the SP of East Godavari C M Thrivikram Varma of harassing him.

Navin Kumar, an IPS officer and subordinate to the East Godavari SP, claimed there was a threat to his life and alleged that Varma was obstructing him from carrying out his duties of checking “illegal” ganja smuggling in Rampachodavaram area.

NRI consortium to invest over Rs 2,000 crore in Kerala

A Dubai-based consortium of NRIs from various countries around the world propose to invest over Rs 2,000 crore in Kerala to set up IT/ITES enabled Business Parks and Life Spaces projects.

The investments would primarily be through Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Sebastian Joseph, Chairman of the Consortium, told reporters here.

The proposed ‘Emerging Kerala’ initiative of the state government here next month and its investment friendly policies have given the NRIs confidence to start their project in Kochi, he said.

Togolese women begin sex-strike for regime change

A group of Togolese women have commenced a week-long sex strike in an unusual attempt to oust the west African nation’s president and end decades of family rule.

Women members of the civil rights group – Let’s Save Togo – are withholding sex from their husbands and partners for a week. Their aim is to cause the resignation of Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbe, Daily Mail reported.

Isabelle Ameganvi, leader of the women’s rights division of the group said the strike will put pressure on Togo’s men to take action.

CCS cops book cheating case against investment firm

Based on a complaint lodged by Hyderabad MP, the Central Crime Station has registered a case against Nowheera Shaik, the managing director of Heera Group of Companies, who has allegedly cheated a large number of investors.

According to the FIR, Nowheera Shaikh who claims to be the managing director of Heera Group Companies has published an advertisement in a Urdu daily in which she said her company, that deals in the buying and selling of gold bars, has branches in various parts of the country, Africa and Dubai.

Two sadhvis gangraped by Swami Aryanand and associates in Ashram

Two sadhvis at the Maharshi Mehi Ashram here were allegedly gangraped by its in-charge and his associates, police said today.

The sadhvis, who were sisters, were gangraped by the Ashram in-charge Swami Aryanand and his associates in a field inside the premises last night.

The accused were identified as Aryanand, Ghanshyam Mandal, Vivekanand Sinha, Pankaj Kumar, Prem Yadav, Ratna Paswan and three other unidentified persons, police said.

A case has been registered against various sections of IPC but no one has been arrested, they added.
