German Bakery blast: Pune court to sentence convict Himayat Baig today

Three years after the German Bakery blast, the Pune sessions court will announce the quantum of punishment to main accused Himayat Baig on Thursday. Baig was convicted for murder, criminal conspiracy and other charges on Monday.

Himayat Baig, the man who provided logistical support for the blast is the only accused arrested in the case so far. He was taken into custody in September 2010.

Salman gives Eid a miss, Arbaaz says fret not

Actor Salman Khan, who has been locking Eid for the past four years to release his films, won’t have any outing this year. The superstar’s younger brother Arbaaz says there are plenty of interesting dates to choose from and no need to do a rush job on ‘Mental’.

Since 2009, every year Salman had a release on Eid. It started with Wanted, followed by Dabangg in 2010, Bodyguard in 2011, and 2012 spy thriller Ek Tha Tiger. Interestingly, all of them turned out to be box office blockbusters.

Hrithik’s ‘Bang Bang’ shoot to start May 1

The shooting of Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif-starrer ”Bang Bang” will commence May 1 this year. The movie will hit screens on the same date in 2014.

A Fox Star Studios production, “Bang Bang” will be directed by Siddharth Anand of “Bachna Ae Haseeno”, “Salaam Namaste” and “Anjaana Anjaani” fame.

The film will be shot across Europe, Far East and India, and is said to feature “spectacular stunt sequences, intense chemistry and edge-of-the-seat excitement, as Hrithik and Katrina will scorch the silver screens in never-seen-before avatars”, said a statement.

Vidyut to design own fights for ‘Bullet Raja’

Tigmanshu Dhulia’s new project “Bullet Raja” has an official action director Parvez Khan, who did the heart-in-the-mouth stunts in “Ra.One”, “Vishwaroop” and “Agent Vinod”. But new action-star Vidyut Jamwal will compose his own stunts for the film.

Vidyut, who steps into a doughty cop’s role, which was earlier to be played by Irrfan, will be making a very special appearance in the film. And the action-star will make his appearance as special as possible.

Iran speeding up nuke programme, say diplomats

Iran has increased installations of high-tech machines that could be used in a nuclear weapons programme to over 600 in the last three months, it has been claimed.

Diplomats said the machines are not yet producing enriched uranium and some may be only partially installed.

According to News24, the installations suggest that Iran possesses both the technology to mass-produce centrifuges, which can enrich much faster than its present machines and the ability to evade international sanctions meant to keep it from getting materials it needs to do so.

US drone strikes kill 4 al Qaeda suspects: Yemen

Two US drone strikes today killed at least four suspected al Qaeda militants and destroyed the house of another in a mountainous area south of the capital, Sanaa, a Yemeni security official and witnesses said.

The four were killed in the first strike while riding a vehicle in the desert area of Oussab al-Ali, about 140-km south of Sanaa, the official said.

The second strike targeted the house of a suspected jihadi, Hamed Radman, believed to be an al Qaeda member, the official said. He said it was not known whether Radman was inside the house at the time.

Bodies of slain Maoists shifted to Andhra

The bodies of nine Maoists killed in an alleged gunfight with police in Chhattisgarh forests were shifted to their native villages in Andhra Pradesh early Thursday, two days after the incident, police said.

After an autopsy at Konta in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, the bodies were brought to Andhra Pradesh. Amid tight security, the police shifted eight bodies to their villages in Warangal district and one body to Karimnagar district.

The slain members of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) include five women.

Gadkari denies he assured Nitish PM choice won’t be Modi

Former Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari Thursday denied he assured the Janata Dal United that Narendra Modi will not be projected as the party’s prime ministerial candidate.

The clarification came after newspaper reports claimed Gadkari, in a meeting with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in July last year, had assured the alliance partner that the Gujarat chief minister will not be projected for the top post.

Husband throws acid on wife in Tamil Nadu

Suspecting infidelity, a man threw acid on his wife, who suffered serious burn injuries, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred yesterday after the couple had an heated argument, police said.

The woman, mother of three children, was at her parents’ house. Her husband, a painter, went there and threw acid on her, police said.

The 27-year-old victim was admitted to a government hospital, police said, adding her condition was critical.

Police has arrested her husband and cases were registered against him under various sections of IPC, including 307 (attempt to murder).

Environmentalists protest shark fishing in Nicaragua

An environmental group is calling for a greater government presence in Nicaragua’s Caribbean waters following the discovery of a boat with dozens of dead sharks aboard in Little Corn Island.

Complaints have been filed with the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry, or Marena, and the Nicaraguan Aquaculture and Fishing Institute about the shark slaughter, the Nicaraguan Foundation for Sustainable Development, or Fundenic-SOS, said.

Musharraf flees after Pak court orders arrest

Former military ruler PervezMusharraf was on Thursday ordered to be arrested by a court here in a case over the imposition of emergency rule in 2007, but evaded being taken into custody with his bodyguards whisking him away before the police could act.

Thane bandh begins, buses damaged

A bandh called by major political parties in Thane against ongoing demolition of illegal structures without providing alternate accommodation to the occupants began with some persons damaging at least 12 buses in the wee hours of Thursday, police said.

Parties, including Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena, gave call to the dawn-to-dusk shutdown against the razing of illegal buildings by Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) while demanding that alternate accommodation be provided to residents who will be displaced in the drive.

Passenger held with 12 gold biscuits at Hyderabad

A passenger was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly trying to smuggle 12 gold biscuits worth Rs 40 lakh hidden in his body cavities and clothes at Rajiv Gandhi international airport here.

Mohd Riyaz, who belongs to Tamil Nadu, was found to have concealed eight out of the twelve gold biscuits, each weighing 116 gms, in his rectum and the rest in his socks, according to a Customs official.

Riyaz, a frequent flyer, had landed from Dubai when he was intercepted by the sleuths on a tip-off, he told a news agency.

School girl gang-raped in car in Delhi

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by her three neighbours, including her cousin, after she was kidnapped while on her way to school, police said.

The class X student was kidnapped in a car allegedly by the trio from Ashok Nagar in East Delhi when she was on way to school yesterday morning and taken to Sarojini Nagar in South Delhi.

She was raped allegedly by the trio in Sarojini Nagar. Later they pushed her out of the car, and warned her not to report the crime.

A case was registered after the girl’s family approached the police; one of the accused has been arrested.

Al-Qaeda magazine taught how to ”make bomb in your mom”s kitchen using pressure cookers”

A recipe for how to make pressure cooker bombs, which were used in the Boston Marathon bombings, have been a frequent weapon of militants in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, and was once published in the Al-Qaeda magazine Inspire.

Al-Qaeda”s Yemen branch gave a detailed description on how to make a pressure cooker bomb in the 2010 first issue of “Inspire.”

The chapter titled “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom,” described ”pressurized cooker is the most effective method for making a simple bomb”, the Washington Times reports.

PCB submits bid to host Cricket World Cup in 2018

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has submitted a bid to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to host the 2018 World Cup, according to the board’s chairman Mohammad Zaka Ashraf. Stating that the matter has also been forwarded to the Cricket Governing Body, Ashraf further said that that talks were held with some more countries to woo them to Pakistan but added that there was no progress, The News reports. Meanwhile, Ashraf said that banned cricketers Muhammad Asif and Salman Butt will have to complete their punishment before the cricket board considered their future.

Karnataka CM visits Bangalore blast victims in hospital

Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar today visited Bangalore”s K C Hospital to meet injured survivors of Wednesday”s bomb blast.

Talking to reporters outside the hospital, Shettar said: “Met the injured today. State government will take care of their medical needs.”

He said the police has started a comprehensive investigation and central agencies are also assisting them in the process.

“Investigation is going on, we will soon know the details,” he added.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had on Wednesday sought an inquiry into the blast.

Assad says West will ‘pay price’ for supporting Al-Qaeda in Syria

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said the West will pay a high price for what he described as their support for Al-Qaeda.

In an interview with al-Ikhbariya TV channel, Assad compared the situation to US support for Islamists in Afghanistan leading to the rise of the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

According to the BBC, Assad alluded to the aid provided by the US to the Afghan mujahideen in 1980 during their war against the Soviet occupation, seen as one of the roots of jihadism.

He said that the West has paid heavily for funding Al-Qaeda in its early stages.

SC cancels Karnataka’s 49 mining leases

The Supreme Court Thursday cancelled all leases for iron ore extraction in 49 category C mines in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka.

The apex court forest bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam said the proceeds from the sale of iron ore extracted from category C mines would stand forfeited and would go to special purpose vehicle constituted for the reclamation and rehabilitation of the mining area devastated by illegal mining.

Nepali woman gang-raped in Delhi

A Nepali woman in her early 20s was allegedly gang-raped in the national capital, police said Thursday.

The woman was found in half-naked and semi-conscious condition near Nanakpura flyover in south Delhi around 7.30 a.m. Thursday.

The woman was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where she is being treated.

According to her statement to police, she was abducted from Kotla Mubarkpur area near South Extension in south Delhi Wednesday night by three unidentified people, who raped and dumped her near the flyover.

Thousands of Pakistanis homeless after quake

Thousands of people are homeless and desperate for aid in southwestern Pakistan following a deadly earthquake centered in neighbouring Iran that toppled scores of homes and killed at least 36 people, officials said Wednesday.

The Pakistani army has deployed several hundred soldiers to help the relief effort in Mashkel, the area of Baluchistan province hit hardest by yesterday’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
