Having slumped to their worst defeat in the tournament, Mumbai Indians skipper Ricky Ponting has admitted that his and Sachin Tendulkar’s poor form has affected the team’s performance in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

Opening the batting, Ponting and Tendulkar have just managed two half-century stands together out of five games. As a matter of fact, on three occasions Mumbai lost its first wicket in the opening over.

German Bakery blast: Himayat Baig gets death sentence

A Pune court on Thursday awarded death sentence to Indian Mujahideen operative Himayat Baig, who was earlier this week convicted for his involvement in the German Bakery blast here.

The attack had left 17 people dead and 64 injured.

Pune Sessions Court Special Judge MP Dhote had on Monday reserved announcement of quantum of punishment till today.

The blast occurred on Feb 13, 2010, at the German Bakery in Pune’s upmarket Koregaon Park. The bakery was a popular haunt of youngsters and foreign tourists.

BJP will bring in strong anti-terror law: Naqvi

A day after a terror strike near the BJP office here left 16 persons injured, party leader Muktar Abbas Naqvi on Thursday said their first priority would be to bring a strong anti-terrorism law if BJP-led NDA is voted to power in the next Lok Sabha Elections.

“The party’s first effort would be to bring in a strong anti-terrorism law like the POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002) if it is voted to power,” Naqvi told reporters here.

He said the BJP had always given priority to internal and national security issues in every election.

A new study has highlighted the importance of zebrafish as a model organism for human disease research.

Researchers demonstrated that 70 per cent of protein-coding human genes are related to genes found in the zebrafish and that 84 per cent of genes known to be associated with human disease have a zebrafish counterpart.

Snapchat processing ‘150 million images a day’ Home

Photo-sharing service Snapchat is now processing 150 million images per day, the firm’s co-founder and chief executive officer Evan Spiegel has said.

Spiegel said that Snapchat, which is popular for sending photo messages that delete themselves within 10 seconds, has seen a three-fold increase in just four months.

By comparison, the most recent statistics from Facebook’s Instagram service show users posting 40 million photos per day, the Washington Post reports.

Gene that regulates heart`s regenerative ability found

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have reported discovery of a specific gene that regulates the heart`s ability to regenerate after injuries.

Scientists led by Dr. Hesham Sadek have demonstrated that the gene Meis1 regulates the regenerative capability of newborn hearts.

The function of the gene, called Meis1, in the heart was not known previously.

Hair strands contain valuable information about stress levels in senior citizens, which can be used to determine an individual`s cardiovascular disease risk, a new study has found.

Unlike a blood test that captures a snapshot of stress hormone levels at a single point in time, a scalp hair analysis can be used to view trends in levels of the stress hormone cortisol over the course of several months.

This approach allows researchers to have a better sense of the variability in cortisol levels.

High Court cancels bail of Mecca Masjid blast accused

The Andhra Pradesh High Court Thursday cancelled the bail granted by a lower court to two former RSS members accused in the 2007 terror attack at the historic Mecca Masjid here.

The high court asked the sessions court to reconsider its orders, granting bail to Lokesh Sharma and Devender Gupta.

The high court verdict has come as a relief to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which opposed the bail on the ground that it could hamper the investigations.

Congress senior leader KR Amos has opined that YSRCP Chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s ‘Mulaqats’ at Chanchalguda jail were according to the rules.

In the absence of free flow of information the only thing which get strengthened and spread is rumour and very unfortunately the government which claims to bring ‘openness’ to our lives, is doing such things which endanger national security. So far three lives have been lost in the protests against hanging and the valley is completely directionless.

Early human species ‘hobbit’ may have shrunk due to island dwarfism

A study of the remains of the creature nicknamed the “hobbit” shows that there may have been a dwarf version of an early human species.

The diminutive species of human whose remains were found on the Indonesian island of Flores could have shrunk as a result of island dwarfism as it adapted to its environment, the BBC reported.

The hobbit co-existed with our species until 12,000 years ago.

Since its discovery in 2003, researchers have struggled to explain the origins of these metre-high, tiny-brained people, known scientifically as Homo floresiensis .

Sensex trades more than half a percent up

A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets was trading more than half a percent up Thursday after a smart rally by interest sensitive stocks like banks, capital goods and automobile on hopes of an interest rate cut by the central bank early next month.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened in the red at 18,695.34 points, was trading at 18,883.94 points in the late afternoon session, up 0.82 percent or 152.78 points from its previous day close at 18,731.16 points.

New method devised to detect autism in children

Scientists have come up with a new technique to detect autism in children based on their brain activity, says a study.

Neuroscientists from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and the University of Toronto have developed an efficient and reliable method of analysing brain activity to detect autism in children. Their findings have appeared Thursday in the online journal PLOS ONE.

WhatsApp says it has more users than Twitter

Messaging app WhatsApp now has more users than Twitter, company founder and CEO Jan Koum said at the AllThingsD Dive Into Mobile conference in New York.

Declining to cite a specific figure, Koum said WhatsApp has more than 200 million monthly active users who generate an average of 8 billion inbound messages and 12 billion outbound messages per day.

Twitter has 200 million monthly active users.

The WhatsApp Messenger, which is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Nokia, allows users to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

‘Both Congress, BJP responsible for Goa casinos’

Both the Congress and the BJP were equally responsible for promoting casinos in Goa, although both parties opposed these when in opposition, a recently declassified US diplomatic cable released by Wikileaks claims.

The cable, part of the US embassy’s weekly compilation of “economic highlights”, also says the Goa government’s grand plan was to lure Indian gamblers who went to Nepal’s casinos to splurge.

UAE arrests al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist cell

The United Arab Emirates security authorities have busted an al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist cell plotting attacks against the Gulf state, official WAM news agency reported Thursday.

The cell, comprising seven members of different Arab nationalities, was also recruiting people to “promote the work of al-Qaida” besides funding the group to help expand its presence in the region, WAM said, quoting an official source.

The UAE state security prosecution will launch a probe into the case and the cell members will stand trial after the investigation is done. (Xinhua-ANI)

Obama slams senators for rejecting expanded gun background checks

President Barack Obama has lashed out at senators who blocked a bipartisan plan to support expanded background checks on firearms.

At the White House, Obama said that it was a pretty shameful day for Washington, vowing to continue efforts on tighter gun restrictions.

According to the BBC, the plan was blocked on a 54-46 vote, six votes short of the 60-vote hurdle needed to clear the chamber.

Gun rights groups hailed the defeat of the measure, arguing it would violate the right to bear arms.
