Tendulkar again quashes retirement talks

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar once again quashed speculations about his retirement, saying his job was to play cricket and he will carry on doing that.

Tendulkar, who for long has been asked about his retirement, once again reiterated that he would continue playing till the time he wanted to.

“I think people have been asking me this question for long. The first time it was asked was in 2005. Your job is to ask questions and mine is to keep playing,” Tendulkar said on the sidelines of a promotional event here Thursday.

Owner of bike used in Bangalore blast traced: Shinde

Investigators probing the Bangalore blast have tracked down the owner of the motorcycle where the bomb was planted but no one has been arrested so far in connection with yesterday’s explosion.

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today said that with the help of Tamil Nadu Police, the first buyer of the motorcycle has been traced and then the second buyer and from there they traced the third person who bought the bike.

15 dead, 160 injured in US fertiliser plant blast

WAShington, April 18 (IANS) A massive blast at a fertiliser plant in central Texas Wednesday night killed 15 people, wounded more than 160, and damaged 50 to 60 homes, officials said Thursday.

The casualty count in the explosion in the small town of West, about 75 miles (120 km) south of Dallas, with a population of just 2,800, could spike to 60 or 70, CNN reported citing George Smith, the city’s emergency management system director.

A jawan of Andhra Pradesh’s anti- Naxal force ‘Greyhounds’ was killed in an encounter with Maoists in the jungles of Chhattisgarh’s Bjiapur district today, a senior police official said.

The jawan, whose identity was not disclosed, was part of the commando squad which on Tuesday conducted an anti- Maoist operation in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, where ten Naxals were gunned down.

Pak SC rejects Musharraf’s plea for bail, police may arrest him

Islamabad, Apr. 18 (ANI): The Supreme Court of Pakistan has stripped former interior minister Rehman Malik and his predecessors of unlimited perks and privileges. Earlier on March, the Interior Ministry had issued a notification declaring unlimited perks and privileges for Malik and his predecessors. According to the notification, former federal interior ministers and the federal ministers, excluding caretaker federal ministers, who had held the office when the constitution stood suspended, can benefit from facilities like protocol coverage, reports the Daily Times.

30 injured in Aligarh protests after six-year-old raped, murdered

At least 30 people were injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh as irate people clashed with police after the recovery of the dead body of a six-year-old girl suspected to have been raped early Thursday, police said.

Police officials said protestors in Banna Devi area blocked traffic in the morning after the body was found, adding “mild force and rubber bullets” were used to disperse the angry crowd.

Later, Senior Superintendent of Police Amit Pathak suspended two cops and sent a circle officer to the police lines.

Afghan Taliban pledge to take revenge over Guantanamo shootings

Islamabad, Apr. 18 (ANI): The Afghan Taliban has pledged to take revenge on US troops in Afghanistan after guards at Guantanamo prison fired non-lethal rounds at inmates to quell unrest. According to US military officials, guards at the US-run prison in Cuba fired the rounds last Saturday to halt unrest as they relocated inmates into individual cells, reports The Dawn. Officials met with resistance from some detainees as they moved inmates from communal housing to individual cells. No detainees were seriously injured, according to the officials.

Pak defence budget of over Rs 600 bln finalized for next financial year

Islamabad, Apr. 18 (ANI): The Pakistan government has finalised a defence budget of Rs 627 for next financial year. According to sources, besides normal defence allocations at Rs 627 billion, the defence division will get Rs 4 billion for development programme and unspecified grants as share of disbursements under the coalition support fund and the Pak-US strategic cooperation. The defence production division will be given Rs 2.3 billion for development and Rs 587 million for service delivery, reports The Dawn.

1993 Mumbai blasts: 70-year-old Zaibunissa Kazi gets four weeks reprieve

The Supreme Court has given seventy-year-old Zaibunissa Kazi four more weeks to surrender before the jail authorities in connection with her role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

The apex court granted Zaibunissa Kazi four more weeks to surrender on humanitarian and health grounds.

The other convicts who have got a partial relief are Shariff Abdul Gafoor Parker and Issaq Mohd Hajwane.

Earlier in the day, three convicts Altaf Ali Sayeed, Essa Memon and Yusuf Nulwalla were also given four more weeks to surrender.
