Man arrested for raping stepdaughter for over a year

A man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 14-year-old step daughter for over a year, police said in Rohtak on Friday. Three women, including mother of the victim and a doctor, have also been booked by police on charges of getting the victim’s abortion done in a private hospital located at Sunariya Chowk in Rohtak, police said.

The shocking case came to light when a police team carried out a raid at the nursing home on Thursday and caught Dr Seema along with the victim’s mother Purna and another woman named Omi while she was conducting the abortion process of the girl.

Boston Police say they have captured second bombing suspect

Boston Police said on Friday they have taken custody of the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings and are sweeping the suburban Boston neighborhood where he was captured after a massive manhunt.

Authorities said they had custody of the suspect, earlier identified as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, one of two brothers believed to have carried out Monday’s attack, which killed three people and injured 176.

Missing Indian student wrongly identified as Boston bomber

Indian-American student Sunil Tripathi, who had been missing since mid-March, was today wrongly identified on social media websites as one of the two suspects responsible for the Boston Marathon terror attack.

The social media and part of the mainstream media was abuzz with rumors that 22-year-old Sunil, who went missing on March 16 and they have still not been able to find him, was the “possible suspect” in the Boston bombing that killed three persons and wounded nearly 180 others.

Fortis doctors rule out immediate surgery for Tripura girl Roona with swollen head

Doctors treating the 18-month-old girl from Tripura, who is suffering from a rare illness that has caused her head to swell, said that the girl was stable although it would take a few more weeks to begin any intervention to treat the girl.

The hospital today said that the doctors had started draining fluids from the girl’s head till her condition improves for any intervention.

Police launched a massive manhunt for Tsarnaev, 19, after killing his elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev in a shootout overnight.

Nawaz Sharif escapes plane accident

Former premier Nawaz Sharif had a narrow escape when his chartered aircraft made an emergency landing in this eastern Pakistani city today after one of its windows developed a crack.

The PML-N chief was flying from Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, to Hasilpur district in Punjab, 400 km
from Lahore, when the Challenger aircraft’s window was damaged.

A total of 11 people were on board the aircraft, which was at an altitude of 9,000 feet when the incident occurred.

Case registered against couple

About a week after she was forced to deliver a baby on the roadside in the wake of government hospital staff turning her away, a case has been registered against the woman and her husband by police on a complaint from the duty doctor.

The woman duty doctor today lodged a complaint that the Andhra-based couple did not allow her to work and verbally
abused her, police said, adding, cases were registered under IPC sections including 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty).

The couple yesterday left for their native place in Andhra Pradesh.

Sunrisers beat Punjab, top points table

Three huge sixes by Thisara Perera in the 19th over sealed a five-wicket victory for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kings XI Punjab in their Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Rajiv Gandhi international stadium here Friday night.

Three cops suspended in minor’s rape case

Two Delhi Police officials were suspended for “misbehaving” with the family of the five-year-old rape victim, while an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) was suspended for slapping a girl protestor, said police Friday.

“Dharampal Singh, SHO (station house officer) of Gandhi Nagar police station where the victim’s missing person’s report was registered April 15, and the initial investigating officer of the case Mahavir Singh, a sub-inspector (SI), were suspended with immediate effect Friday,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Prabhakar.

CJI for early disposal of cases in village courts

The Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir today said that work to dispense speedy and fair justice to common man through the ‘Gram Nyayalaya’ (rural court) is in the process of being implemented.

Justice Kabir, who was in Sirohi district to inaugurate a ‘Gram Nyayalaya’ building, told reporters here that “these courts are created to to mitigate legal problems of poor who found it difficult to travel to district courts”.

India has non-military interest in Afghanistan and any Pakistani fears in this regard are imaginary, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said on Friday.

“We have a non-military interest in Afghanistan. We have committed a billion dollars to the reconstruction of Afghanistan. We are building Afghanistan’s parliament. We’re building roads… But we’ve not sent a single soldier to Afghanistan,” he told the popular Charlie Rose Show.

Rahul Gandhi to visit MP on April 24-25

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be on a two-day tour of assembly poll-bound Madhya Pradesh on April 24-25, the party’s state unit said on Friday.

He would visit Mohankheda in Dhar district on April 24 and Bhopal on April 25 to hold talks with the party MPs, MLAs, office-bearers and workers, state Congress president Kantilal Bhuria said in a statement.

In Mohankheda, representatives from 14 Lok Sabha seats, party candidates of 2008 assembly polls and 2009 Lok Sabha polls and party office bearers will take part in the meeting with Rahul.

Over 1,000 chit fund agents urge Mamata to bail them out

Over 1,000 agents of chit fund-funded Saradha Group, which is virtually on the verge of collapse, Friday held a demonstration in front of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s house here, urging her to bail them out.

A few days ago, the Banerjee government in the state ordered the arrest of the group’s chairman and managing director Sudipta Sen for defaulting on repayments.

The agents gathered in front of the chief minister’s south Kolkata residence and sought her intervention in the payment crisis.

No breakthrough in Bangalore blast yet

Even two days after a bomb blast near the ruling BJP’s office here that left 16 injured, there was no breakthrough till late Friday, as investigations by sleuths of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the state police did not lead to any suspects or motive behind the terror attack.

“Investigation in the bomb blast at (the north-western suburb of) Malleshwaram is underway though no definite clues so far on its perpetrators or additional inputs to nab the culprits. We hope to crack the case at the earliest,” a senior police official told IANS.

Wipro studying impact of US immigration bill

Indian IT bellwether Wipro Ltd is studying the impact of the US immigration bill drafted by a group of eight senators, chairman Azim Premji said Friday.

“We appreciate the bipartisan work of the ‘gang of eight’ senators to work towards comprehensive immigration reform and address issues of critical importance for the US. We are reviewing and evaluating the impact of the bill, which is 800-page document,” Premji told reporters here.

Three CISF men arrested for molesting colleague’s wife

Three Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials were arrested for molesting their colleague’s wife here in the city, police said Friday.

The incident was reported from south Delhi’s Dwarka Sector 23 area Thursday morning.

Sujal Haldar, Rahul Kumar Mishra and Sanjay Kumar were arrested Thursday evening following the 28-year-old victim’s statement.

“All the accused belong to West Bengal and are deputed with the Special Protection Group (SPG),” said a senior CISF official.

They live in the victim’s neighbourhood.

Minor’s rape accused was earlier booked for trespassing

The accused in the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi is also involved in a property trespass case in an east Delhi locality, police said Friday.

“Manoj Kumar, 25, is involved in a case of trespassing in the same area (Gandhi Nagar) following a property dispute with his father, who later disowned him and asked him to leave the house,” a police officer told IANS.

“The father of the accused had lodged a case of trespassing in 2010 in Gandhi Nagar police station. Manoj was arrested and later released on bail,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police D.K. Gupta told IANS.

Boston bombing suspects not connected with Chechnya: Official

Moscow, April 19 (IANS) Two brothers identified as suspects in the Boston marathon bombings grew up in a Russian region near Chechnya but have had little to do with the area for years, a spokesman for Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said Friday.

Police in Boston identified the two suspects as 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev.

Kadyrov’s spokesman Alvi Karimov said the brothers lost connection with Chechnya many years ago.

“The people suspected of committing crimes in Boston have nothing to do with Chechnya,” Xinhua quoted Karimov as saying.

Frog weddings in northeast India to appease rain god

agartala/Guwahati, April 16 (IANS) In a ritual to appease the rain god, villagers in Tripura and Assam married off frogs hoping that it would end their sufferings arising out of a protracted dry spell in India’s northeastern region.

Frog weddings are traditionally performed in northeastern India during drought-like situations before the onset of monsoon.

Syria shoots down balloon carrying US-made spying devices near Idlib

The Syrian army says it has shot down a balloon that carried US-made spying devices over the northwestern province of Idlib.

According to Syria’s official news agency, SANA, the balloon, which was equipped with US-made spying devices including cameras, was shot down over town of Maaret al-Numan on Thursday.

Syrian officials say the devices have large memory storage.

Syrian army units have also seized a car with a European number plate and a warehouse of ammunition and US-made rockets.

Protesters throng AIIMS where raped girl is admitted

Over 100 protesters Friday thronged the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where the five-year-old girl, who was raped for two days in captivity, is admitted.

The angry protesters were stopped at barricades manned by over 100 police personnel deployed at AIIMS.

Both the entry gates to the hospital were closed.

The crowd, which was shouting anti-police slogans, primarily consisted of Aam Adami Party workers.
