Mukherjee expresses shock and anguish over 5-year-old girl”s rape case

President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday expressed shock and anguish over the rape and brutality committed on a five-year-old girl, saying that urgent steps must be taken to bring the perpetrators to immediate justice.

In a statement, Mukherjee said: “I am shocked and deeply anguished at the latest incident of sexual assault and rape of a five year old child in Delhi. I join her family in praying for a speedy recovery and call upon concerned authorities to ensure the best possible medical attention for her.”

Boston bombers’ parents say their sons framed

The parents of the two Boston bombing suspects have flatly denied that their sons, Dzhokar Tsarnaev, 19, and his older brother Tamerlan, 26, could be involved in Monday’s terror attack.

CNN Friday cited Anzor Tsarnayev, the father, as telling the channel in Dagestan, an area in volatile Russian Caucasus, that “someone framed them,” while their mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, said “this is a setup.”

“It’s impossible for them to do such things. I am really telling you that this is a setup,” Tsarnaeva told state-run Russia Today from Dagestan, according to CNN.

Dubai to host science fair

The UAE’s top science students will display their latest innovations, while getting an opportunity to meet potential employers at the Emirates Foundation for Youth Development “Think Science” Fair here this Sunday.

Hundreds of high school and university students from across the UAE will display 160 innovative project proposals, designed and implemented by the youth under the supervision of university teachers and business experts at the fair to be held at the World Trade Centre in Dubai between April 21-23.

Schoolgirl raped in Odisha, one held

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped by five people and later raped by two of them in Odisha’s Balasore district, an official said Saturday.

Police Friday detained one person for questioning in connection with the incident, while other suspects are still at large, district Superintendent of Police Amrita Das told IANS.

The crime occurred at Gopalpur village under Soro police station limits, about 170 km from state capital Bhubaneswar April 4. It only came to light once the victim was admitted to hospital, after she narrated her ordeal to her family several days later.

Men need to change their mentality: Krishna Tirath

Expressing shock over the brutal rape of the five-year-old girl, Union Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath Saturday emphasised on the need for men to “change their mentality”.

“It is a shocking incident and the way this five-year-old girl was raped shows the sick mentality of men. There is a need to change this mentality,” Tirath said.

Of the reported callousness of policemen to the kin of the victim, the minister said efforts are on to sensitise Delhi Police.

Hundreds have gathered outside the Delhi Police headquarters in ITO, New Delhi to protest the faulty investigations in the rape of a five-year-old child in the national capital, as well as an assault by a police officer on a woman protester.

The uncle of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect currently in FBI custody has expressed outraged over his nephew’s actions and has urged him to ask for forgiveness from the victims of the blast.

Ruslan Tsarni said that he last saw Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarneav in 2005 and said he was ashamed of their actions.

In a message to Dzhokhar, he said that ‘if you’re alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness from the victims, from the injured.’

A visibly angry Tsarni said that he would have alerted authorities if he knew of his nephews’ alleged plan, Fox News reports.

7.0 magnitude quake hits China, 72 killed

At least 72 people were killed and hundreds of others injured today when a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked southwest China’s Sichuan province causing massive destruction.

The quake hit Lushan county of Ya’an city in southwest China’s Sichuan Province at 8:02 am local time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be at a depth of 13 Kms and was monitored at 30.3 degrees north latitude and 103.0 degrees east longitude.

US says Musharraf case should be resolved ‘solely in accordance with Pak’s laws’

The United States has said the issue of former president Pervez Musharraf needs to be resolved “solely in accordance with Pakistan’s constitution and laws”.

The statement came from A spokesperson of the US embassy.

According to the Daily Times, the remarks underscored that “the US takes no position on the return of Musharraf or the legal proceedings against him”.

The spokesperson further said in the statement that the US reaffirms that it is backing democracy in Pakistan.

Five-year-old rape victim stable, say doctors

The five-year-old girl undergoing treatment here after she was brutally raped for two days is responding to treatment, doctors said Saturday, adding that her condition had stabilised.

The traumatised girl, who was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Friday for better treatment, was examined by a team of doctors from surgery, paediatrics and gynaecology departments.

“The girl is faring well, she is responding to treatment. She is now in a stable condition,” D.K. Sharma, medical superintendent at AIIMS told IANS.

The five-year-old girl who was brutally raped and assaulted allegedly by a neighbour while being held captive and starved for two days is battling for life after she contracted infection from foreign objects inserted in her body.

Editor of Marathi weekly held for molesting 17-yr-old niece

The editor of a Marathi weekly, who was absconding after allegedly molesting his minor niece, has been arrested, a senior police official said here on Friday. The accused, who was arrested on Friday, is the editor of Maanpatra, a Marathi weekly published from Parli Vaijnath.

“We have arrested the accused and registered a case against him under Section 354 (a) of the IPC,” Parli Town’s senior police inspector Hanumant Gaikwad told PTI.

The accused, 48-year-old Balasaheb Sopanrao Jagatkar, allegedly molested his 17-year-old niece on Wednesday evening, Gaikwad said.

Chinese troops erect post 10 kms inside Ladakh

In a deep incursion, Chinese troops have entered the Indian territory in Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) sector in eastern Ladakh and erected a tented post, setting the stage for a face-off with Indian troops.

A Platoon-strength contingent of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) came 10 km inside the Indian territory in Burthe in DBO sector, which is at an altitude of about 17,000 feet, on the night of April 15 and established a tented post there, according to highly placed sources, which said that a Chinese Army Platoon usually consists of around 50 men.

Police get Delhi rape accused on three-day transit remand

A Bihar court Saturday granted Delhi Police three-day transit remand of Manoj Kumar, 25, accused in the rape of the five-year-old in Delhi. Kumar was arrested from a village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, police said Saturday.

A team of Delhi Police, with help from local police, arrested Kumar from Chiknauta village under Karza police station in Muzaffarpur, about 70 km from here, early Saturday, a district police official said.

Bird flu cases reach 91 in China; 17 dead

The number of people affected with H7N9 avian influenza, or bird flu risen to 91 Friday evening, with four new cases being found in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Seventeen people have died of the flu so far.

Confirming the upswing in the bird flu cases in its daily update Friday, the country’s national health and family planning commission said of the total, seven H7N9 patients have been discharged from hospitals, Xinhua reported.

The other 67 patients were being treated in designated hospitals, it said.

Madrasa burns students’ multi-media phones

The management of a madrasa in Banda, 212 km from here, has banned the use of multi-media phones by students. Authorities burnt many such phones found in possession of students at the Madrasa Jama Arabia Hathaura.

Madrasa authorities however made it plain that there was no objection to the use of ‘simple phones’.

The head of the madrasa, Maulana Kari Habeeb told IANS: “The decision was a considered one, taken after it was noted that students were browsing anti-religion websites and immoral stuff.”
