Minor’s rape: Accused left victim for dead, say police

The man who brutally tortured and raped a five-year-old girl here had fled to his hometown in Bihar thinking that the victim was dead, police said Saturday, adding that he was being brought to Delhi.

Manoj Kumar, 22, was arrested from his in-laws house in Bharthua village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district late Friday by a team of Delhi Police and Bihar Police, said Delhi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prabhakar.

Home minister assures inquiry into minor’s rape

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Saturday assured that proper action would be take in the rape case of the five-year-old girl here Saturday.

“An inquiry has been ordered. Proper steps will be taken after the inquiry report will be handed over to us,” said Shinde.

He said that he was informed of the details of the rape case Friday and that the the accused had been arrested and will be brought to Delhi from Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

Replying to a question about the victim’s condition, Shinde said: “We are trying to ascertain the her medical condition.”

Azad meets family of rape victim at AIIMS

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today met the family of the five-year-old rape victim at AIIMS and enquired about her health.

The minister assured the girl’s parents of all help and medical care of the victim. He also met the doctors looking after her treatment and instructed them to provide best medical treatment.

The minister stayed in the hospital for 15 minutes.

The rape victim was shifted to AIIMS last evening.

Taliban attacks increased by 47 percent in 1st quarter of 2013

According to an Afghanistan NGO, there has been a sharp increase in the number of attacks in this year”s first quarter, a recent study has revealed. The Afghanistan NGO Safety Office has let out that the first quarter saw 2331 attacks by armed opposition groups compared to 1581 during the same time last year, with a statistical increase of 47 percent in the crime rate, the New York Times reports. The director of the NGO office Tomas Muzik has said that 2013 will follow the marks of 2011 in becoming the most violent year, with the most attacks and victims.

Russia to de-orbit space station docking module

Russia plans to de-orbit and sink its Pirs docking module at the International Space Station later this year, a top official with space corporation RKK Energia said.

Alexander Kaleri, head of the company’s scientific technical centre, said undocking and de-orbiting Pirs will take place before a new Russian module docks with the station.

RKK Energia’s deputy chief designer Alexander Derechin said in March that the launch of the multirole laboratory module (MLM) was tentatively scheduled for the end of 2013.

32 killed, 190 injured in Myanmar water festival

At least 32 people were killed and 190 others injured during a water festival held on the occasion of the new year in Myanmar, state media reported Saturday.

The water festivals called “Thingyan” were held across the country from April 13 to 16, Xinhua reported citing the New Light of Myanmar daily.

During the festival, there occurred 177 incidents including murders, car accidents, fights, theft and arson among others.

However, the report said that this year’s festival saw less crimes compared to previous years, due to close supervision by officials.

‘Savita Halappanavar died of medical misadventure’

Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar, who lost her life after being denied an abortion at a hospital in Ireland, died of “medical misadventure”, a jury at her inquest on Friday ruled unanimously.

The ruling at Galway Courthouse found there were systemic failures or deficiencies in the care given to 31-year-old Savita, originally from Karnataka.

“You showed tremendous loyalty and love to your wife. All of Ireland followed the case,” coroner Ciaran MacLoughlin told Savita’s husband Praveen Halappanavar as he released the verdict at the end of the seven-day inquest today.

Musharraf sent on 4-day judicial remand in judges’ detention case

Islamabad’s anti-terrorism court (ATC) has sent former president Pervez Musharraf on a four-day-long judicial remand in the judges’ detention case.

After 14 days he will be presented in the same court, on May 4.

Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi of the anti-terrorist court issued the order.

According to the Express Tribune, the former dictator will further be sent to Adiala jail where a special cell has been made for him.

Shocked and anguished at the rape of a five-year-old girl here, President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday called for urgent introspection to identify causes behind repeated failure of society to ensure security of women and children.

Missing man’s dead body found
(Siasat News): Police has recovered the dead body of a man who was mysteriously missing from Dandigal. The deceased was the resident of Qutubullahpur.

Police said that K Ramesh, 22, had left his house on April 22 and did not return. His dead body was recovered from near Maisamma temple.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

Muzaffarpur residents demand death for Delhi rape accused

People in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district expressed anger and shame Saturday that one of their own was involved in the brutal rape of a five-year-old girl in Delhi.

Manoj Kumar, 25, who allegedly raped the girl after confining her in his Gandhi Nagar room in east Delhi, is from Bharthua village under Aurai police station in Muzaffarpur.

He was arrested early Saturday. Some people in Muzaffarpur said he deserved the death penalty, given the savagery he inflicted on a child.

Doctors say condition of five-year-old stable, protests against rape in Delhi

The condition of the five-year-old girl, who was raped allegedly by a 22-year-old man after holding her captive, was stable even as protests erupted in the capital on Saturday against the grisly crime.

Doctors attending to the victim at the AIIMS said the girl’s condition was stable. She was shifted to AIIMS on Friday evening.

Protests erupted at AIIMS and Police Headquarters on Saturday morning demanding justice for the victim and punishment to policemen who allegedly did not help locate the girl who went missing on April 15.

Why is West Bengal being ‘singulary deprived’?, asks Mamata

Questioning why West Bengal was being ‘singularly deprived’, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday alleged political discrimination against the state by the Centre, a day after it approved a Rs 12,000 crore special package for Bihar.

“Very recently, few states have been granted thousands of crore of rupees by the Central Government. It is very good. We support that all states must get financial help,” Banerjee said in a Facebook post.

“But let us know why West Bengal is being singularly deprived? Is it a political vendetta, guided by narrow politics?” she questioned.

Three killed in Moscow building gas blast

Three people were killed and four others injured in a gas explosion and fire in a high-rise building in Moscow, the emergencies services said Saturday.

Three apartments were damaged following a gas explosion in an apartment on the building’s sixth floor Friday evening. The blast caused fire, and the blaze was extinguished early Saturday.

A total of 120 emergencies ministry officers and 17 units of special machinery were working on the site.

The residents of the building in Shirokaya Street were evacuated and temporarily accommodated in a nearby school.
