Another rape incident comes to light in east Delhi

Close on the heels of the horrific rape of a five-year-old girl, a teenaged girl was abducted and raped by a group of eight men including four whom she knew, police said today.

The incident came to light last week when the parents of the 13-year-old victim, residing in Farsh Bazar in east Delhi, approached police and complained about the incident.

According to the complaint, the victim was kidnapped from near her house by the group of people, including one person whom she addresses as “uncle”, on March 16 and forcibly taken to Loni in Ghaziabad.

Illegal arms manufacturing unit busted in Jaisalmer

Police today claimed to have busted an illegal arms manufacturing unit here.

“Two guns, raw materials and equipment to manufacture arms were seized from the unit which was running in a house in Sangar police station area,” the police said.

Arbab Khan, who was running the unit, managed to escape when a police party raided the unit last night, they said adding that a search is on for him.

Nitish expresses anguish over minor’s rape

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday strongly condemned the brutal rape of the five-year-old girl in Delhi but opined against death sentence for the perpetrator of such heinous crime. “The act is barbaric. Such incidents raise serious question on humanity,” Kumar told reporters while expressing his anguish over the minor’s rape which has sparked outrage across the country.

Mubarak released in one case, but remains in custody

A court in Egypt decided on Saturday to temporarily release former president Hosni Mubarak over charges of illicit gains, but still ordered he be kept in custody over other cases, the official MENA news agency reported.

The decision of the Court of Appeals came in response to Mubarak’s appeal over his continuous detention in a case of graft and illicit gains.

The court, presided over by Judge Ahmed Salah al-Shehabi, decided to “wholly accept the appeal in form and substance and to release the defendant (Mubarak),”

Minor girl raped in Andhra

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The accused, identified as K Purnachandra Rao (21), allegedly sexually assaulted the girl when she was carrying food for her uncle in KP Palem village yesterday, they said.

Police said Rao, riding a two-wheeler, knocked the victim down before taking her to a deserted field where he raped her.

Meanwhile, the victim was today shifted to Kakinada hospital as the village hospital did not have a gynaecologist, they said.

Body of AP engineer brought to Guntur from US

The body of a 35-year-old software engineer, who died in Washington under mysterious circumstances early this month, was brought here on Saturday.

Sarath Kumar, who hailed from Guntur, had gone for a local tour of Washington along with some relatives on March 31 and was reported by those accompanying him as missing from the FDR Memorial area.

His body was traced in the vicinity of the famous memorial after few days. Sarath, an employee of TCS, had been living in Chicago for the past seven years.

Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Eden Gardens here Saturday.

Michael Hussey top scored for the Super Kings with 40 off 51 balls. However it was Ravindra Jadeja’s 36-run cameo off 14 balls, including three sixes and three fours, that clinched the tie for the visitors.

Electing to bat, the Knight Riders scored 119 for nine. Super Kings chased down the total with five balls to spare, scoring 124 for six.

UPA playing politics over funds for rural jobs: Mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday blamed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in New Delhi for playing “sheer politics” by not yet releasing its share of the funds for the rural job scheme.

Bengal’s spending on the 100 days of jobs provided under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) was the country’s highest at Rs.4,408.70 crore, as against a total fund availability of Rs.4,108.03 crore, the chief minister claimed.

‘336 percent jump in child rapes in a decade’

Amid a public outcry over a brutal sexual assault on a five-year girl here, a report by rights group Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) shows there has been an increase of 336 percent in cases of child rapes from 2001-11.

The ‘India’s Hell Holes: Child Sexual Assault in Juvenile Justice Homes’ report, circulated Saturday, said sexual offences against children in India have reached an epidemic proportion and a large number of them are being committed in the juvenile justice homes run and aided by the government.

Sonia meets rape victim at AIIMS

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi Saturday met the five-year-old rape victim undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, informed sources said.

According to the sources, Gandhi also met the parents of the minor girl and inquired about her condition from the medical team.

Rape accused beaten to death by victim’s brother

Taking revenge for his sister’s rape, a man in Rajasthan kidnapped and beat to death the man accused of the crime Saturday, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred in Subhash Nagar in Bhilwara, some 250 km from Jaipur.

“A 22-year old girl had been kidnapped by Shankar Lal a week ago. As per a first information report registered by her with the police, Shankar Lal kept her hostage for two days and raped her several times,” said Mandal Circle Officer Satish Kumar.

Chhattisgarh IAS officer to get PM’s award

O.P. Choudhary, a 2005-batch IAS officer of Chhattisgarh, will be conferred an award by the prime minister for his initiatives to provide education to children in Maoist insurgency-hit Dantewada district, official sources said.

He will be given the award on Civil Service Day (April 21) in New Delhi.

Choudhary, who has been recently shifted to Raipur as director of public relations from collector of Dantewada, has been selected for prime minister’s award of excellence in public administration for his outstanding contribution.

Boston bombers had 6 bombs, rifle, handguns: police chief

The two Boston Marathon bombing suspects had at least six bombs — three of which exploded, handguns and a rifle when police officers first confronted them in a dark residential street in Watertown, a Boston suburb, police said Saturday.

“A single officer was the first to encounter the two cars that Tamerlan and Dzhokar Tsarnaev were driving, just before 1 a.m. Friday,” Watertown police chief Edward Deveau told CNN. “Before the officer could get backup, the two cars stopped, and the brothers got out.”

NRI woman raped by brother in Haryana

A man in this Haryana town was Saturday booked for raping his 32-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI) sister, police said.

According to the police, they have registered a case of rape and causing hurt with poison under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“We have booked the accused on charges of rape and causing hurt by poison after recording statement of the victim today (Saturday). The victim has been undergoing treatment and her condition is stable,” Rohtak Deputy Superintendent of Police (City) Virender Singh told IANS.

13-year-old gang-rape victim attempts suicide

A 13-year-old girl attempted suicide Saturday after being allegedly gang-raped by eight men, four of whom are known to her. She is in ICU in serious condition, the family said.

Three of the accused have been arrested, police said Saturday.

The girl, who was abducted March 15 by the men and released after nine days, consumed an overdose of sleeping pills in the morning at her house in Farsh Bazar area in east Delhi.

Iranian army to hold tactical drills

Iranian army will conduct a military exercise in near future in the Esfahan province, said Ground Forces (GF) commander Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan Saturday.

In the course of the exercise — codenamed Bait-ul-Muqaddas 25 — the army will conduct a series of tactical training operations and test modern military equipment, Pourdastan said.

This will be the army’s second drill in the first quarter of the current Iranian year (started March 20, 2013).

Musharraf barred from meeting visitors after farmhouse declared sub-jail

Islamabad, Apr 20 (ANI): The farmhouse of former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf has been declared sub-jail.

The former army chief will be shifted to his farmhouse where he will remain during his 14 day judicial remand in the wake of security issues.

According to the News, an Assistant Superintendent Jails will be deployed at the farmhouse and all rules of a jail would be applicable.

Musharraf will not be allowed to hold any meeting without prior approval from the Chief Commissioner Islamabad, the report said.

“This is a sickening mentality that is emerging now. The new (anti-rape) law that has been passed needs new provisions. First, those who rape minors should get death penalty,” she said.
