Policemen need moral training: Azam Khan

Policemen need to be given moral training to sensitise them to the problems of common man and make them more approachable, Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan has said.

“Common man surrounded with problems avoid police and is afraid of approaching them… There is overload in the police department. We are in favour of recruitment. This time recruits will be given moral training so that their behaviour is good with people”, Khan told reporters in reply to a question.

Khan was here to attend a marriage function of a Samajwadi Party leader.

Anti-rape protests continue, 3 Delhi metro stations shut

Protests against the rape of a five-year-old in the national capital continued Monday leading to three Metro stations in central Delhi being closed.

The Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhavan and Race Course Road Metro stations were closed around 10.15 am as a precautionary measure.

“We have been asked by Delhi Police to close the Metro stations till further notice as a precautionary measure,” said a Delhi Metro spokesperson.

Inter fail student commits suicide

Dejected over his failure in exam, an intermediate student hanged himself to death. According to Chilkalguda police, intermediate 1st year student Sai Kumar, resident of Lalapet became disconsolate after the announcement of result when he found that he failed in the exam.

Fearing admonishment by his parents and dejected over his failure he hanged himself to death at his house. Police shifted Sai Kumar’s body to Gandhi hospital. Later the body was handed over to his parents after postmortem.

Farmer killed by lightning

A farmer was killed by lightning at Kheri village of Kerameri mandal. According to the family members of the deceased, 55 year old Mandadenanaji resident of Kheri town was washing his hands and feet after finishing his agricultural work when thunderstorm began. As soon as he entered the house he was struck by lightning and died.

Drawing of lot for Hajj aspirants tomorrow

Drawing of lots for the selection of aspirants for Hajj 2013 will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 12 noon at Hajj house, Nampally. Minority Welfare Minister Mr. Mohammed Ahmedullah will attend as chief guest. Hajj committee chairman Mr. Syed Khaleeluddin Ahmed will preside over.

Mr. Khaleeluddin has appealed the Hajj aspirants who have already performed Hajj, to voluntarily withdraw their applications before drawing of lots because the amount for Hajj paid by the second-time pilgrims will be confiscated.

Delhi rape accused Manoj raped wife before marriage

In another shocking revelation it has been reported that rape accused Manoj Kumar, who was arrested by police yesterday had also raped his wife before marriage.

He later on married the girl abiding by village panchayat’ orders.

Rape accused Manoj Kumar, 22, was arrested from his in-laws’ house Chitkouna village in Muzzafarpur district of Bihar yesterday. He was sent to Delhi by air and has been interrogated by Delhi police.

Surprisingly, Manoj’s wife, who herself has been a victim of sexual assault demands for the release of her husband.

JPC covering up 2G scam: BJP

Alleging “massive cover up” in 2G spectrum allocation, the BJP said Monday that it had sought adjournment of question hour in both houses of parliament to raise the issue of the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) report on the scandal.

“There is a massive cover up of the 2G scam by the JPC. Why did they have to show the report to the law minister, when Supreme Court had said the report should not be shown to bosses,” said Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar Monday, day one of the second half of parliament’s budget session.

Rebels urge air strikes on Assad missiles

Syrian rebels have asked their foreign supporters to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for “surgical strikes” on missile positions of Syrian government forces.

A statement by the Syrian National Coalition Saturday addressed an Istanbul meeting of the Friends of Syria group, which includes the US, the EU members and some Arab nations.

“It is the moral imperative of the international community, led by the Friends of Syria, to take specific, precise and immediate action to protect Syrian civilians from the use of ballistic missiles and chemical weapons,” the statement said.

Advani, Sushma launch BJP campaign in Karanataka

BJP leaders L. K Advani and Sushma Swaraj Sunday launched the ruling party’s campaign for the May 5 Karnataka assembly with a scathing attack on central government’s corruption and promising “zero tolerance” against graft.

Advani addressed public meetings in this north Karnataka town, about 350 km from Bangalore, and in Davangere in the central part of the state while Sushma Swaraj spoke at a rally in the state capital.

Earthquake measuring 3.4 shakes Assam

An earthquake of mild intensity measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale shook Assam on Sunday, the third within a week to rock the state.

The quake struck at 3.52 pm at a depth of 34 km on latitude 26.5 degree North and longitude 93.1 degree East with its epicentre in Nagaon district of the state, said the Met office in Guwahati.

As the quake lasted only a few seconds with hardly perceptible tremor, many people were not aware about it and did not cause any loss of life or property, official sources said.

Woman arrested for forcing 2 nomad children into begging

A 40-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly abducting two children of a nomad couple and forcing them into begging, police said. A 12-year-old girl and her three-year old brother of the nomad family from Andhra Pradesh presently living here were reported missing from April 17 and based on a complaint from their mother, a case was registered by police. Investigations revealed that one Mallika of Ariyalur district had taken the children by train to Puducherry on the promise of ensuring a comfortable living, Assistant Police Commissioner C Chandrasekaran said.

Modi’s govt failure to protect people figures in US report

India’s civil society continues to express concern over the Gujarat Government’s failure to protect people or arrest those responsible for communal violence in 2002, a US report on human rights has said.

The report, titled ‘Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2012’ released by the US State Department, as mandated by the Congress, says human rights groups continue to allege that investigative bodies in their reports showed bias in favour of Gujarat’s Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Two pilots killed in Iranian jet crash

Two pilots were killed when a fight jet crashed in western Iran.

The Iranian US-made fighter jet F-5 crashed into Mount Filman near the town of Abdanan, some 450 km from Tehran. The bodies of both pilots were found at the crash site, said regional governor Morad Nasseri, Mehr news agency reported Sunday.

Investigators were working at the crash site, the governor said.

The jet fighter belonged to the Dezful airbase in the Khuzestan province.

Iran’s Air Force employs US-made combat aircraft purchased before the 1979 Islamic revolution, and also Russia-made Sukhoi and MIG aircraft.

China has 102 bird flu cases, 20 dead

The bird flu has claimed 20 lives while causing 102 cases of the avian influenza –H7N9 — in China, with six fresh cases being reported from coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu Sunday, Xinhua reported.

The National Health and Family Planning Commission said in its daily update on H7N9 cases that a total of 102 H7N9 cases have been reported in the country, including 20 leading to death.

Of the total, 12 H7N9 patients have been discharged from hospitals after receiving treatment, and the other 70 patients are being treated in designated hospitals, it said.

China quake damages 102 cultural relic sites

The magnitude-7.0 earthquake in China’s Sichuan province which has killed a total of 186 people and injured 8,761 since Saturday, has also damaged 102 cultural relics protection units, authorities said Sunday.

The units comprise 24 sites at national level and 61 at provincial level, reported Xinhua citing state administration of cultural heritage.

The temblor has also damaged another 12 museums, where 274 cultural relics items have been affected, it added.

Same-sex marriage protest in France

At least 45,000 people marched in the French capital Sunday in opposition to a controversial gay marriage bill sponsored by President Francois Hollande, police said.

Organisers of the rally put the number of protesters at some 270,000 people.

The demonstration comes just two days ahead of a final vote in the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, on the bill that allows same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.

World Bank aims to end extreme poverty by 2030

The World Bank governors have endorsed a proposal to eliminate extreme poverty around the world over the next 17 years, the World Bank Group said in statement.

The proposal, put forward by World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, sets an ambitious goal to reduce the number of people living on $1.25 a day to 3 percent or less of the world’s population by 2030.

UAE, France discuss cultural relations

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and France have held discussions over cultural relations and explored ways to strengthen them, particularly in arts and literature.

The meet was held between Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE’s minister for culture, youth and community development and visiting Aurelie Filippetti, French minister for culture and communication.
