Injuries caused to Dec 16 gang-rape victim were fatal: Doctor

The in-charge of the Safdarjung Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) where the Dec 16 gang-rape victim underwent treatment for 10 days, Monday told the court trying the case that the injuries inflicted by the six accused on her led to her death.

The nature of injuries the victim had “can cause death in natural course”, the doctor, deposing as a prosecution witness in the Dec 16 gang rape case here, told the fast track court of Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna.

Fake currency racket busted, three held

The police claimed to have busted a fake currency racket with the arrest of a liquor salesman and two others, who allegedly used to circulate fake notes by passing it to the customers.

Mukesh Jaiswal was arrested from Govind Nagar yesterday and based on his inputs, two of his accomplices were nabbed by police, SSP Yashaswi Yadav said.

An advanced scanner-printer machine along with fake notes of the face value of Rs 42,410 were seized from them, he said.

Mukesh was arrested after two of his customers alleged they were handed fake notes at the liquor store.

Boston bombings suspect struggled with Islam, his aunt says

An aunt of the elder Boston bombing suspect says he struggled to find himself while trying to reconnect with his Chechen identity on a trip to Russia last year.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev “seemed to be more American” than Chechen and “didn’t fit into the Islamic world,” his aunt Patimat Suleimanova told AP.

Suleimanov added that Tsarnaev spoke daily on Skype to his American-born wife, who had recently converted to Islam, and that she instructed him on how to observe Islam correctly.

LPG connection to the villagers to prevent deforestation

The Forest Department of Nagaland has been providing cooking gas connections to villagers to stop deforestation in the state.

Talking to media-persons on the side-line of Earth Day celebration here today, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Nagaland, C L Goel said, “To discourage usage of firewood, which has been leading to massive deforestation, villagers in the state are being provided with LPG connections.”

However, he said that there are problems of distribution of gas cylinders by the dealers because of the remoteness of the villages.

SSC exam paper leak: 9 held

Nine people, including six government officials, were arrested in connection with a case of Staff Selection Commission examination paper leak, police said today.

Of the nine arrested who were allegedly helping candidates in Combined Graduate Level Tier-I Examination-2013, one is a lower division clerk, two policemen and another is a a sales tax inspector who is awaiting his civil service results.

Turkish PM to visit Gaza despite US request for delay

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan insists on visiting Gaza following his trip to the US despite US request for a delay, reported Xinhua Monday citing local media.

Local Daily News quoted a Turkish official as saying there will be no changes in Erdogan’s Gaza visit although Washington asked him to postpone it due to the “critical timing.”

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said however, “the issue will be discussed during Erdogan’s visit (to the US) on May 16.”

Will my quitting remedy the situation, asks Delhi Police chief

Amidst growing demands for his resignation, Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar Monday said he won’t step down over growing crimes against women in the capital, stating that his exit won’t help remedy the situation.

“If my resigning will prevent such depravity in the society, then I am prepared to resign a thousand times. But that is not going to address this problem,” he told the media persons at a press conference here Monday.

Neeraj Kumar said the factors responsible for the rising crimes against women in the city were those of mental depravity, psychopathy and mental sickness.

Delhi sees 158 percent increase in rape cases: Police

As many as 463 rape cases have been registered at various police stations in Delhi in the first four and a half months of 2013, indicating an increase of 158 percent over the same period last year, Delhi Police said Monday.

There has been at least a 600 percent rise in molestation cases while 783.67 percent more harassment cases have been noted in the same period, said an officer.

Last year, as many as 179 rapes, 139 molestations and 49 cases of harassment were registered till April 15.

Sanjay Dutt gets bail in cheating case filed by producer

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt Monday secured bail from a Mumbai court which had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him in a cheating case filed by a movie producer.

Andheri Metropolitan court issued the warrant against Dutt in a complaint filed by producer Shakil Noorani, who, among other things, alleged that the actor had failed to complete his movie “Jaan Ki Baazi” in 2002 despite taking the signing amount of Rs.5 million.

Pakistan interim government refuses to try Musharraf for treason

Pakistani’s caretaker government Monday refused to initiate high treason proceedings against former president Pervez Musharraf, saying it has a limited mandate to hold elections and deal with routine affairs, reported Xinhua.

There are five petitions seeking Musharraf’s treason trial for allegedly subverting the constitution and declaring a state of emergency in 2007.

Attorney General Altaf Qadir submitted a formal reply to the Supreme Court, saying the interim government wants to leave the issue to the next government as it has no mandate to pursue the case.

Israel, US finalize $10 bn arms deal

US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon announced Monday that they reached an agreement over arms deal worth $10 billion, reported Xinhua.

Under the deal, Israel will buy various new weapons, including US missiles and advanced radar system for fighter planes.

Speaking at a joint press conference held at the military headquarters base in Tel Aviv, Hagel said the new military equipment would retain the Israeli Air Force’s edge over other countries in the region.
