Delhi rape accused had consumed alcohol, wanted to ‘have some fun’

Investigators will make the two accused in the rape of a five-year-old girl confront each other after the test identification parade of one of them, police said on Tuesday. Manoj, who was arrested on Saturday, was sent to judicial custody for test identification parade (TIP) and police is planning to conduct it soon.

After the TIP, sources said, they will seek custody of Manoj and confront him with Pradeep, who was arrested on Monday from Bihar.

84 Guantanamo prisoners on hunger strike: US military

Several more detainees at the United States’ infamous Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba are staging a hunger strike to protest disrespect of the Qur’an and confiscation of personal items.

A US military spokesman said on Tuesday that 84 prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay are on hunger strike.

However, the detainees’ lawyers dispute the number. They say nearly all of the 166 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are refusing to eat. They also say many are being force-fed to prevent dangerous weight loss.

Another ricin letter found in US

A letter that was intercepted and sent to a screening facility at an airbase in the United States contained the deadly poison ricin according to preliminary tests.

The letter was discovered at Bolling Air Force Base outside Washington on Tuesday, a week after three letters were intercepted on their way to US President Barack Obama, a US senator, and a Mississippi judge.

“We’ve had another incident today, I’m told, at Bolling Air Force Base, the same substance,” Senator Harry Reid said.

Gang-rape victim was taken to Singapore for best care: Doctor

The medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, where the Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape victim was treated for 10 days, told a Delhi court Tuesday that the victim was shifted to a Singapore hospital as it had the “best” critical care and organ transplant facility.

The doctor deposed as a prosecution witness before Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna that the decision to shift the victim to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore was taken as it had the best treatment for critical care.

Delhi rape: Rapists inserted candles, bottle to stop girl’s bleeding

Panic gripped the two accused when the five-year-old girl started bleeding after they raped her, and one of them inserted a small glass bottle and bits of candle into her vagina to stem the flow of blood, police said Tuesday.

One of the accused, Manoj Kumar, 22, allegedly tried to slit her throat with a blade, a police officer told IANS.

Pradeep Ram, 19, who was nabbed Monday from Bihar, told police that despite the girl bleeding heavily after being raped by Manoj, Pradeep also raped her.

Pradeep told police when the girl started crying they decided to kill her to hush up the crime.

Teacher arrested for molesting minor girl in Odisha

A teacher was arrested Tuesday in Odisha’s Sambalpur district for molesting an eight-year-old-girl in the school classroom, police said.

The 28-year-old offender, an art and crafts teacher in a private school at the district headquarters town of Sambalpur, about 320 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, allegedly gave the students some drawing assignments and started watching an obscene video on his laptop.

After finishing her drawing, the girl went to show it to the teacher, who forced her to look at the video, police said.

He also touched her private parts and molested her.

Bill Gates visits Dubai

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and chairman of Microsoft Corporation, is on a visit to Dubai.

The UAE’s Vice President and Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid received gates at his palace.

During the meeting, the two discussed relations and partnership between Dubai Cares and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in charitable fields and securing health care, especially for children and school students in poor countries.

Prepare for Syrian chemical weapons, Kerry tells NATO

US Secretary of State John Kerry has called on the NATO to prepare for the possible use of chemical weapons by Syria in the ongoing civil war there.

“We should also carefully and collectively consider how NATO is prepared to respond to protect its members from a Syrian threat, including any potential chemical weapons threat,” Kerry said at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

On Tuesday, Israel’s top military intelligence analyst, Brig. Gen. Itai Brun, said Syrian government forces had used chemical weapons against rebels trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

India asks China to revert to status quo in Ladakh

India today asked China to revert to the status quo position in Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) sector in Ladakh where troops of both countries were in a face-to-face situation after Chinese forces intruded nearly 10kms inside Indian territory eight days ago.

“We have asked the Chinese side to maintain the status quo in this sector (of the western border),” official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin said, adding, “by this I mean the status quo prior to this incident.”

Pakistan court lists out journalists paid secretly

The court released the names during the hearing of petitions by two private television channel anchors who had requested the court to probe the matter of media accountability and payments made to journalists by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led government in 2011-12.

The Supreme Court Monday made public the list of journalists and media personnel, reported Dawn.

Economy bottomed out; to grow at 6.4 percent in 2013-14: PM panel

New Delhi, April 23 (IANS) The Indian economy has “bottomed out” and is expected to grow at 6.4 percent in the current fiscal against the estimated 5 percent expansion registered in the previous year, the prime minister’s economic advisory panel said Tuesday.

“The economy has bottomed out and we will achieve higher growth of 6.4 percent in the current financial year,” Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council chairman C. Rangarajan said at a media conference here.
