Reddit apologises for Indian student’s witchhunt

Reddit, a popular social news and entertainment website, has apologised for posts on the site that had led to speculation that a missing Indian origin student could be one of the Boston bombing suspects.

“The crowdsourced, more criminal investigation was very volatile and fraught with problems, and, obviously, wrong,” Reddit general manager Erik Martin told CNN. “That was something we all wished hadn’t happened.”

13 injured in Pakistan blast

At least 13 people were injured when a bomb went off outside a hospital in Pakistan’s southwest Quetta city Wednesday, a media report said.

Geo TV said that the incident happened around 8.10 a.m. in Satellite town area located in the suburbs of Quetta, the capital city of the country’s Balochistan province.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Fayyaz Sumbul said that the bomb was detonated by a remote controlled device and an estimated 2 to 3 kg of explosive materials were fixed on a bicycle parked near the hospital.

Burma frees political prisoners after EU lifts sanctions

Burma has freed at least 56 political prisoners after the EU decision to lift the last of its sanctions.

Bo Kyi of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), however, pointed out that still over 200 political prisoners are in prison.

According to BBC, one of the freed activists, Zaw Moe, said that Burmese service that the releases were linked to the EU move.

The report pointed out that the latest amnesty could also be linked to the onset of the Burmese new year.

A report by the Washington Post said that hospitalized Dzhokhar scribbled notes to indicate that he and his slain brother Tamerlan were acting on their own when they left two shrapnel-laden bombs near the finish line.

Eight-storey building collapses in Bangladesh, 70 killed

An eight storied building collapsed in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Wednesday, killing more than 70 and trapping many more, reports said.

Health Minister AFM Ruhal Huq pegged the death toll at more than 70.

The death toll could rise further as many more lay trapped under the debris.

The commercial building at the Rana Plaza building in Savar that caved in today morning, houses many garment factories, a bank and other shops.

50 killed in Dhaka building collapse

At least 50 people were killed after an eight-storeyed building on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka collapsed Wednesday morning, an official said.

“At least 50 bodies have so far been recovered,” Israfil Alam, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the ministry of labor and employment, told Xinhua.

Niilufar Yasmin, a fire service official, said that the building which houses a ready-made garments factory, a bank’s branch and shops, collapsed around 9 a.m.

With many people believed to be still trapped inside, rescuers fear the toll may rise.

Mother and daughter gang-raped in Bihar

Three people have been arrested in Bihar for abducting and raping the mother and sister of a youth as a revenge for his eloping with the sister of one of the accused, police said Wednesday.

The attack took place in Sariswa village under Majhaulia police station of West Champaran district April 19, but came to light after a case was lodged with the police.

Blasts in Quetta, Karachi kill 7, 60 injured

Seven persons were killed and over 60 others injured in five bomb attacks in the Pakistani cities of Quetta and Karachi Tuesday, including one that was carried out by a suicide bomber who was trying to target the minority Shia Hazara community.

The suicide attacker detonated his explosives-laden truck when he was stopped by Frontier Corps personnel at a check post near Alamdar Road, an area in Quetta with a large Shia Hazara population.

The incident occurred at around 9.15 pm.
