Unseasonal rain in Andhra kills 25, crops lost

The unseasonal rains that lashed Andhra Pradesh over the last four days have claimed 25 lives and damaged crops over 70,000 hectares, officials said Wednesday.

The deaths, almost all due to thunderbolts, were reported from 11 districts.

Guntur accounted for seven deaths; four people died in Nellore, three in Prakasam, two each in Warangal, Krishna and East Godavari and one each in West Godavari, Khammam, Adilabad, Visakhapatnam and Mahaboobnagar districts.

Twelve people were also injured in various rain-related incidents in three districts.

Hindu seers helped India progress: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday said that it was the teachings of Hindu seers had kept the country going forward.

Chinese copters enter hundreds of kilometres inside India

As the intruding Chinese soldiers refuse to budge from their occupied position in Daulat Beg Oldi(DBO) sector in Ladakh, two Chinese military helicopters have violated Indian airspace at Chumar, several hundred kilometres southeast of Leh, adding to the prevailing tension. The Chinese choppers entered the Indian airspace on April 21 and hovered over the area for quite sometime and returned after dropping some food cans, cigarette packets and notes written in their local language, official sources said today.

Notification to fill 384 Home Guards vacancies issued

Jagan’s case verdict on April 27

The CBI special court has reserved its verdict till April 27 on the petitions filed by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Vijayasai Reddy regarding the multiple chargesheets filed by CBI.

The hearing in this case was completed on Wednesday and the court reserved its judgment

Jagan counsel had contended that there should be a single trial and a single charge sheet to a single FIR and quoted Supreme Court rulings.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the Hanuman Jayanthi rally to be held on Thursday.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma informed that 20-km Shobha Yatra would be held from Ram Mandir at Gowliguda to Hanuman Temple at Tadbun. Certain traffic restrictions have been imposed in view of the rally and the people have been asked to take alternate routes to avoid inconvenience.

Man kills sister-in-law in Delhi

A 28-year-old man was arrested for killing his sister-in-law to hush up his illicit relationship with her. She had been blackmailing him for gifts to keep the relationship a secret, police said Wednesday.

The accused, Chetan Prakash, was arrested from Karol Bagh in central Delhi.

The incident occurred April 17 at the victim’s house in Swaroop Nagar in north Delhi.

On the fateful day, Prakash visited Rakhi, 28. She complained to Prakash that he had stopped giving her gifts after he married her sister, said a police officer.

BJP attacks Sheila for sharing stage with Kazmi

The BJP Wednesday attacked Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for sharing the dais with Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi, an accused in the Israeli embassy car blast.

Dikshit had shared stage with Kazmi during the re-launch ceremony of Urdu newspaper “Qaumi Salamati” in the capital Tuesday. Kazmi is the editor of the paper and is on bail.

Abu Jundal, an alleged operative of terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba and a key handler during the 26/11 terror attacks, has approached Bombay High Court seeking that he should not be kept in solitary confinement in the same cell where Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab once stayed.

Jundal has been lodged in Arthur Road prison in central Mumbai. His cell was earlier occupied by Kasab, the lone arrested terrorist of 26/11 attacks, before he was executed at Pune’s Yerawada jail.

Afghan officials say 13 killed in floods

Afghan officials say at least 13 people have been killed in flash floods that hit northern Afghanistan.

The police chief of Balkh province, Shir Jan Durani, said today that the flooding took place in the remote districts of Kishindih, Sholgara and Nahri Shai. He says five people are missing.

The flooding late Tuesday also damaged many homes and livestock drowned. Many homes in rural Afghanistan are built of mud or stone and are easily washed away by flooding.

Rahmatullah Zahid, a local official in Balkh province, says seven people died in Sholgara and at least six in Kishindih.
