Deadly attack on Tunisia hotel kills 27

At least 27 people have been killed in an attack on a tourist hotel in the resort town of Sousse in Tunisia, an interior ministry official said.

The attack targeted the Imperial Marhaba hotel in the town, reported The Guardian.

A gunman, armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, was among those killed. It’s not clear if there were other assailants.

Sousse is a popular tourist destination and draws visitors from Europe and other North African countries.

Cafe Coffee Day’s parent brews IPO plans to raise Rs 1,150 crore

Leading coffee shop chain operator Coffee Day Enterprises has filed its papers with regulator Sebi for an Initial Public Offer (IPO) to raise an estimated Rs 1,150 crore.

The company, which runs the country’s biggest coffee chain under the brand Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) and has got private equity giants like KKR, Stanchart PE and New Silk Route as its investors, has reserved Rs 15-crore worth shares for staff.

As per the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) filed with Sebi for the public offer, the company proposes to list its shares on the BSE and the NSE.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Friday defended Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra in the Lalit Modi row, stating that neither had ever been a part of the government when the Congress was in power at the Centre and had met the disgraced former IPL chairman in an unofficial capacity.

France launches terror investigation after decapitated body found in Lyon

France on Friday launched a terror investigation after a decapitated body and a flag with Islamic inscriptions on it were found in Lyon.

Another person was injured in what is suspected to be an attack on a US gas factory in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier near the city of Lyon, reported the BBC.

Reports claimed that the attack was carried out by two assailants who drove into a factory carrying the flag.

Meanwhile, the anti-terror police have nabbed a suspect, officials said.

India face arch-rivals Pakistan in Hockey World League Semi-final

The Indian men’s hockey team will be fully geared to take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their high-octane thriller of the Hockey World League Semi-Final in Antwerp on Friday.

Although the Sardar Singh-led team has claimed two successive win by defeating France (3-2) and Poland (3-0), they were far from impressive.

Meanwhile, Pakistan edged past Poland 2-1 before being thrashed by world champions Australia 6-1 in their second match of the tournament.

Complainant in Pankaja Munde case alleges threat calls

Congress leader Sachin Sawant, who filed the complaint against Maharashtra Women and Children Development Minister Pankaja Munde with the state ACB, has alleged that he has been receiving threatening calls.

UN Secretary General expresses grief over victims of Pak heatwave

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his sympathy for the people killed in the recent devastating heatwave in Pakistan, his deputy spokesperson said.

In a press briefing, Farhan Haq said that Ban’s thoughts and sympathies have gone out to those who had been suffering and added that he hopes that the situation will improve very swiftly, reported the Dawn.

Haq said that he was unsure if Pakistan had asked for any humanitarian assistance from the UN and added that the international body will respond if such a request had been made.

Suicide attack at Kuwait Shia mosque injures eight

A suicide attack at one of the largest Shia mosques in Kuwait has injured at least eight people.

The bomber targeted the Imam al-Sadiq Mosque in the Sawaber district during the Friday prayers, reported News24.

The injured have been rushed to hospitals, with two said to be in critical condition. (ANI)

MMRDA’s TDR sale may earn over Rs 150 crore

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which has put on the block around 30,000 sq metres of transfer of development rights (TDR), today said the sale will fetch over Rs 150 crore.

Nearly 30,000 sq metres, or 3.22 lakh sq ft, of TDR have been generated from slum rehabilitation projects at Nirlon and NESCO plots in suburban Goregaon and Ajgaonkar in suburban Jogeshwari, an MMRDA statement said here.

“The deal is expected to garner over Rs 153.98 crore,” it said.

Myanmar frees Bangladesh border guard: official

Myanmar released today a Bangladeshi border guard detained eight days ago during a rare exchange of gunfire between troops from the two countries, a Bangladeshi paramilitary officer said.

Abdur Razzak was handed over during a “flag meeting” of troops from the nations in the Myanmar border township of Maungdaw, a Bangladesh Border Guard spokesman said.

“Razzak was handed over to our representative team this afternoon. His belongings (including) uniform, submachine gun, ammunition etc have also been returned,” Major Abu Russell Siddiki told AFP.

China couples who buy children to face prosecution: report

Couples who buy abducted children in China will face criminal punishment under proposed laws that would remove their exemption from prosecution, reports said today, as authorities clamp down on the flourishing child trafficking industry.

More than 13,000 children were rescued by police in China last year, the China Daily said, with demand for stolen youngsters fuelled by a traditional preference for sons and a one-child limit for some couples.

Current law imposes harsh sentences for child trafficking, including the death penalty in certain cases.

Dhanush goes fully local in ‘Maari’ trailer

After impressing critics and audiences alike in R. Balakrishnan’s “Shamitabh”, actor Dhanush has gone fully local, going by the trailer of his next Tamil outing “Maari”, which is slated for theatrical release on July 17.

In the film, Dhanush is said to be playing a local hooligan, who goes with the catchphrase “Will finish you off”.

The action-packed trailer features the “Raanjhanaa” star in a dhoti-clad, cigarette-smoking and twirled-moustache avatar.

Directed by Balaji Mohan, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander.
