Sensex tanks 84 points as banking stocks falls after RBI stress test

The benchmark BSE Sensex today fell by 84 points to 27,811.84 as banking stocks plunged after RBI’s stress test showed that deterioration in banks’ asset quality is likely to continue for a few more quarters.

“RBI’s stress test results poured water on the banking sector which had been buoyant following capital infusion plans,” said Anand James, Co Head Technical Research Desk, Geojit BNP Paribas.

Sentiment was also hit after Greece failed to reach an agreement with its creditors ahead of a debt deadline, equity brokers said.

Ficci starts ‘Zero Defect Zero Effect’ for manufacture

Industry body Ficci in association with Quality Council of India has started a series of workshops to create awareness about ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect’ products.

“This initiative is intended to give a major fillip to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to manufacture products with ‘zero defect’ in terms of quality and with ‘zero effect’ in terms of environmental impact under the ‘Make in India’ umbrella,” Ficci said in a statement today.

The ‘Zero Defect, Zero Effect’ (ZED) model represents a method to change the concept of quality, it said.

India to auction oil and gas blocks in this fiscal: Pradhan

The next round of auction of oil and gas blocks under the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) will be held by the end of 2015-16 fiscal, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said today.

The minister also said that the government is mulling to introduce “open acreage” system and also plans to change the formula for production sharing agreement.

Govt mulls to infuse additional Rs 11,500 cr in PSU banks in FY16

The Government is likely to infuse additional USD 1.8 billion (about Rs 11,500 crore) in public sector banks this fiscal over and above USD 1.2 billion earmarked in the Budget, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said today.

“Will put additional USD 1.8 billion in PSU banks apart from USD 1.2 billion budgeted this year,” he told reporters.

The government has earmarked Rs 7,940 crore in the Budget for recapitalisation of PSU banks for the current fiscal.

Vasundhara Raje’s election affidavit ‘shows she was beneficiary of Lalit Modi’s investment’

Troubles for the beleaguered Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje mounted on Friday with the disclosure that she was the beneficiary of investments of over Rs 11 crore made by tainted IPL ex-commissioner Lalit Modi in her son’s company at a high premium.

An affidavit filed by Raje before the Election Commission showed that she had 3280 shares in Niyant Heritage Hotels, owned by her son Dushyant Singh, an MP. Modi had invested over Rs 11 crore in this company at a huge premium of over Rs 96,000 per share of Rs 10.

ISIS claims responsibility for Kuwait mosque bombing, 13 dead

The Islamic State group claimed a suicide bombing that ripped through a Shiite mosque in Kuwait today that medics say killed at least 13 people.

The IS-affiliated group in Saudi Arabia, calling itself Najd Province, said militant Abu Suleiman al-Muwahhid carried out the attack on the mosque, which it claimed was spreading Shiite teachings among Sunni Muslims.

ISIS, a radical Sunni Muslim group, considers Shiites to be heretics.

Medics said the suicide bombing killed “at least 13 people, while 25 others were hospitalised.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sent a “secret note” to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, mentioning allegations against Lt Governor-appointed Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) chief MK Meena of involvement in hawala and curtain purchase scam.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia informed the Delhi Assembly about the note while speaking on the functioning of the elite probe agency. The AAP government and the LG have been engaged in a bitter fight over administrative control of the ACB.

AAP MLA for govt jobs for youths acquitted in terror cases

AAP’s Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan on Friday demanded a government job for the youths who have been acquitted in terror cases.

Speaking under Special Mention (Rule 280) in the Delhi Assembly, Khan claimed there has been several incidents of youths being picked up by the police in Okhla in wrong cases, but many of them were later acquitted by the court.

The whole of Karnataka, now covered by the southwest monsoon, will continue to get heavy rainfall, the meteorological department said on Friday.

The southwest monsoon is quite active over coastal Karnataka and south Karnataka but weakened over north interior Karnataka, meteorological officials said.

Bhagamandala in Kodagu district received heaviest downpour of 26 cm on Thursday.

BI has examined former Union minister K H Muniyappa and an independent MLA R Varthur Prakash from Kolar in connection with its probe into the death of IAS officer D K Ravi on March 16 rpt March 16.

Greece to hold referendum on debt deal

Greek Prime Minister Alexia Tsipras on Saturday said the country will hold a referendum on July 5 on the latest debt deal proposed by its international creditors.

On June 30, the second extension of the Greek bailout expires and Athens must later this month make a payment of 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) or risk crashing out of the single currency and possibly the EU. The talks have been in deadlock for five months.

BJP MLA’s office attacked after ‘sting’ against Raj Thackeray

Office of a BJP MLA from Mumbai was on Friday attacked by a group of persons after a TV channel showed a ‘sting’ video-clip in which he allegedly ridiculed MNS chief Raj Thackeray, police said.

The office of Raj Purohit, located in Kalbadevi in South Mumbai was attacked allegedly by suspected MNS workers, who objected to Purohit calling Raj a “bogus” leader in the video-sting.

158 Pak Hindus get Indian citizenship 3,733 Long Term Visa

According to Home Ministry spokesman, 26 camps of the Task Force were organised in 26 districts across the country during which 1,681 applications for citizenship and 1,665 for LTV were approved till May this year.

“While citizenship has been granted to 158 Pakistani nationals, LTV has been granted to as many as 3,733 Pakistani nationals during the period,” Home Ministry spokesman said in a statement.

There are thousands of applications pending before the government for granting visa for a longer term.

My knee swelling got worse during World Cup: Shami

Indian pace spearhead Mohammed Shami has said that he played with his knee injury during the World Cup as the team’s chief wicket-taker did not want to disturb the winning momentum in the final stages of the showpiece event.

Forced to miss season eight of IPL, Shami underwent a surgery and is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and is unlikely to be match-fit in time for India’s tour of Sri Lanka in late July.

The Bengal paceman though recalls his injury during the Australia series.

Naqvi rubbishes Salian’s claim on Malegaon case

Rubbishing allegations of Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case that she had been asked to “go soft” by the NIA after the NDA came to power, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi today said this charge was part of a conspiracy against the Narendra Modi Government.

“Those involved in the case would not be spared, while the innocents will not be punished. The guilty will not be spared,” Naqvi, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, told reporters on the sidelines of an event here today.

Rape victim says no to mediation with rapist

The 22-year old victim who was offered a mediation with her rapist by the Madras High Court today said the suspect could go to any extent to escape punishment.

The woman, however, said she would not like to settle with him at any cost.

V Mohan was sentenced to seven years in jail for raping a 15-year-old orphan in 2008. The girl became pregnant and is now a young mother of a six-year-old daughter.

Missing ghazal singer Vithal Rao died in Hyd hospital: Police

Veteran ghazal singer Pandit Vithal Rao, who had gone missing from Shirdi last month, died at a city hospital last night, police said.

ACP K Venkatesh Warlu told PTI that Rao’s family identified his body at the government-run Gandhi Hospital today after the local police alerted them.

Rao, who was 86 years old, was found in Begumpet area on June 24. He suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and presumably could not tell the police about himself.
