A new study, using NASA data, has suggested that rainwater can save people in India a bucket of money.

The University of Utah study found that collecting rainwater for vegetable irrigation could reduce water bills, increase caloric intake and even provide a second source of income for people in India.

Cafe Coffee Day parent company files for IPO to raise Rs 1,150 crore

Coffee Day Enterprises, the company that runs the country’s biggest coffee chain under the brand Cafe Coffee day has submitted its papers with market regulator Sebi to get listed on the Indian bourses. The company intends to raise an estimated Rs 1,150 crore to aid its expansion plans and pay off debt.

The parent company has investors like private equity giants KKR, Stanchart PE and New Silk Route. It has reserved Rs 15-crore worth shares for its staff.

Greek prime minster calls for referendum on creditors’ reform plan on July 5

Greece’s talks with its creditors for a bailout plan took a dramatic turn today with the radical left Syriza government lead by Alexis Tsipras calling for a referendum on the latest proposed deal on July 5, and hence rejecting the “ultimatum” given by its lenders. A referendum will have the entire electorate vote for the fate of the creditors’ proposed plan. The government will be working toward urging voters to reject the plan.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced the referendum in a televised address to the nation, following an emergency meeting of his cabinet.

Pulses sowing up by 80%; paddy sowing down

Sowing area of pulses has increased by 80 percent to 11.04 lakh hectares during this kharif season so far on better rains and higher support price announced by the government, but area under paddy lags behind.

“Hike in the minimum support price (MSP) of pulses coupled with rise in retail prices seems to have enthused farmers to put more area under lentils,” Agriculture Secretary Siraj Hussain said.

Sowing of pulses to such an extent is of great significance. If domestic production rises then there will be no inflationary trends in prices, Hussain added.

Additional $60 billion forex needed to fight volatilities: HSBC

As India’s forex kitty is growing steadily, foreign brokerage HSBC on Friday said the country needs at least USD 60 billion more in reserves to fight a sustained period of global volatilities.

According to the global financial services major, India’s forex reserves are above traditional norms but the country’s “peculiar characteristics and experience” in recent crises suggest that about USD 60 billion more could buffer sufficiently against prolonged global financial tightness.

Indiabulls Real Estate will seek shareholders’ nod to raise a total of Rs 538 crore from promoters, including convertible warrants worth Rs 290 crore.

The company’s board, during its meeting held yesterday, approved 3.67 crore equity shares and 4.36 crore convertible warrants, Indiabulls Real Estate said in a regulatory filing today.

The move is part of effort for augmenting “the long-term resources of the company for meeting funding requirements for its business purposes,” and also reflects the confidence that the promoters have, it added.

Indian High Commissioner and wife, facing assault allegations, to leave New Zealand

Indian High Commissioner in New Zealand is set to leave the country after allegations that his wife had assaulted a staff member.

High Commissioner Ravi Thapar was formally recalled and a vehicle was seen this morning at his Wellington address, media reports said on Saturday.

NZ Radio website said that Police were declined to interview both Thapar and his wife Sharmila.

Police said that the staff member who made the allegation of assault had returned to India in early May.

Govt steeply hikes minimum export price for onion to $425/tonne

Government on Friday increased sharply the minimum export price (MEP) of onion by USD 175 per tonne to USD 425 per tonne to ensure adequate domestic supply and contain price rise.

“Export of all varieties of onions…Will be subject to a MEP of USD 425 FOB (freight on board) per tonne,” Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.

The new MEP – rates below which no exports are allowed – will be applicable with immediate effect.

The government imposes MEP to restrict outbound shipments and check price rise in the domestic market.

Govt to infuse additional Rs 11,500 crore in PSU banks in FY16

Government is likely to infuse additional USD 1.8 billion (about Rs 11,500 crore) in public sector banks this fiscal over and above USD 1.2 billion earmarked in the Budget, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said Friday.

“Will put additional USD 1.8 billion in PSU banks apart from USD 1.2 billion budgeted this year,” he told reporters here.

The government has earmarked Rs 7,940 crore in the Budget for recapitalisation of PSU banks for the current fiscal.

China’s economy to grow by 6.93 percent in Q2

China’s economy will grow by 6.93 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, according to a report.

The report by the National Academy of Economic Strategy (NAES), which is affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Friday said the growth forecast is lower than the 7-percent annual growth target, but 0.13 percentage points higher than the earlier NAES forecast, reported Xinhua news agency.

A class of anti-depressants commonly prescribed to curb menopausal symptoms may boost bone fracture risk, warns a study.

The heightened risk associated with SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) seems to last for several years, the results of the study showed.

“SSRIs appear to increase fracture risk among middle-aged women without psychiatric disorders — an effect sustained over time — suggesting that shorter duration of treatment may decrease (this),” said researcher Matthew Miller from Northeastern University in the US.
