Amid BJP government facing heat over Lalit Modi controversy, the Centre today said there is no allegation of any corruption against any minister serving in Narendra Modi government.

Asserting that the BJP government was pursuing agenda of “development and good governance”, Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu charged the Opposition with playing politics over the issue, saying everybody knows what happened during “previous Congress regime”.

Italy takes India to international arbitration over marines

Italy said today it had initiated international arbitration proceedings in the case of two of its marines facing trial in India for the 2012 killing of two fishermen.

The unilateral move by the Italian government follows the failure of direct negotiations with the Indian government aimed at resolving a case which has severely strained diplomatic relations between the two countries, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Voting began at 7 am for the assembly bypoll to Aruvikkara in Kerala which is witnessing a three-cornered contest with voters queuing up at polling booths despite rains.

The bypoll, necessitated following the death of former Speaker and Congress leader G Karthikeyan, is a crucial test for both the Fronts as the Assembly poll is only an year away.

New York escaped convict shot dead by police

A convicted killer who broke out of a maximum-security New York prison three weeks ago was shot dead by a law enforcement officer, police has said, as they continued to hunt for his fellow escapee.

Richard Matt, 49, was killed yesterday in the upstate town of Malone, less than 16 kilometers from the Canada border, New York state police said.

Officers were still hunting for 35-year-old David Sweat, Matt’s accomplice in the spectacular, Hollywood-style prison break from Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, about 40 miles from Malone.

IS kills 164 civilians in assault on Syria’s Kobane

The Islamic State group killed 164 civilians in its offensive on the Kurdish town of Kobane, in what a monitor has called one of the jihadists’ “worst massacres” in Syria.

The killing spree, which took place mostly inside Kobane itself, was widely seen as vengeance for a series of defeats inflicted on the jihadists by Kurdish militia in recent weeks.

At least 120 civilians were killed in a 24-hour rampage on Kobane, and another 26 were executed in a nearby village, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Kuwait arrests suspects as IS bombing hits Shiite mosque

An Islamic State suicide bomber struck a Shiite mosque in the Kuwaiti capital during Friday prayers, killing 27 people as the Gulf state declared an “all-out confrontation” with terrorism.

Health Minister Ali al-Obaidi told Kuwait Television the number of dead had risen to 27 in addition to 227 wounded in the first ever suicide attack on Shiite mosques in the oil-rich emirate.

The toll in the attack, carried out in the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan, is one of the largest in Kuwait’s history.

Israel urges French Jews to flee after factory attack

An Israeli minister today urged French Jews to flee to the Jewish state after a suspected Islamist attacked a factory near Lyon and pinned a severed head to the gates.

“I call on the Jews of France – come home! Anti-Semitism is rising, terror is increasing,” immigration minister Zeev Elkin, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rightwing Likud party said in a statement.

5 Lions Found Dead in Gujarat After Heavy Rain Leads to Flooding

Heavy rains, which caused a flood like situation in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, claimed lives of five Asiatic lions in the Amreli and Bhavnagar districts, forest officials said.

Three lions, including a three-month-old female cub, were killed after they drowned following heavy rainfall in the Amreli district, while carcasses of two other lions were found from the Bhavnagar district, forest officials said.

Iraq confirms its pilot died in Arizona military plane crash

The body of an Iraqi pilot whose military plane crashed during a training mission in the United States has been found at the crash site, Iraq’s Defense Ministry said today, as violence continues to strike around the capital, Baghdad.

The ministry statement said search teams found the body of Brig. Gen. Rasid Mohammed Sadeeq at the crash site in southern Arizona.

He was the only person aboard when the F-16 Fighting Falcon plane went down during a Wednesday night training mission with the Arizona Air National Guard’s 162nd Wing, the ministry said.

Woman set on fire by husband’s friend after failed rape bid

A man allegedly set his friend’s wife on fire after a failed rape attempt on her, leaving her with severe injuries, at Pipari village under Bhoganipur of Kanpur Dehat region, police have said.

The woman, 35, has been admitted to Kanpur Medical College Hospital and her condition is stated to be serious, they said.

The incident happened last night after two friends – Ram Autar of Pipari village and Dinesh of a nearby village – drank together, police said.
