New compound could terminate pancreatic tumours

An effective therapy for pancreatic cancer could soon be a reality as researchers have discovered a chemical compound that reduces the growth of cancerous tumours in the pancreas by 80 percent in treated mice.

The compound — MM41 — was designed to block faulty genes. It appears to do this by targeting little knots in their DNA called quadruplexes, especially found in faulty genes.

Yogendra Yadav fears personality cult projection in approaching Anna Hazare

Newly-formed outfit Swaraj Abhiyan on Saturday said they might not ask anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare to get associated with them at this juncture fearing the personality cult projection, but might approach the veteran activist in future. “In future, if we might have a desire to have him (Anna Hazare)…we will request him to be with us and guide us. But right now we have not approached him,” Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav told PTI here in Goa, where he is on a private visit and will also meet local leaders.

Actress Vidya Balan, a huge fan of Charlie Chaplin, is keen to do a movie on the legendary comic actor and filmmaker.

“I would love to do a Charlie Chaplin movie. I loved Sridevi as Charlie Chaplin in ‘Mr.India’… I’d love to attempt Charlie Chaplin. He has been a huge inspiration in my life,” said Vidya at the inauguration of an exhibition ‘Chaplin Lines’ on Thursday here.

Bowlers revlieved as ICC amends ODI rules

In what will come as a relief to bowlers, ICC has decided to get rid of catchers in the first ten overs, removed the batting Powerplay and also allowed five fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the last ten overs of an innings in one-dayers.

The ICC also said that all “no balls” and not just over stepping by the bowlers will result in a free hit in both ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals. The rule changes will come into effect for series starting on or after July 5.

Harry Potter play to open in the West End

A new play called “Harry Potter and The Cursed Child” will open at London’s Palace Theatre in summer next year with tickets going on sale this autumn.

The stage show will debut at the Palace Theatre in the heart of London in summer 2016, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

The show will follow the lives of the boy wizard’s doomed parents, Lily and James Potter, and their death at the hands of Lord Voldermort, which results in a baby Harry being sent to live with Lily’s cruel sister Petunia Dursley, her husband Vernon and their bullying son Dudley.

RK Nagar bypolls: Independent candidate allegedly attacked by AIADMK workers

Traffic Ramaswamy, who is fighting the RK Nagar bypolls as an independent candidate, was allegedly attacked by AIADMK party workers on Saturday.

“I was attacked by AIADMK people, they hounded my vehicle. This is not fair,” said Ramaswamy.

Ramaswamy, who is up against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the crucial bypolls, had earlier alleged that there was ‘zero security’ in the polling booths.

Greek PM says bailout referendum will be held on July 5

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has in a television address to the nation announced that he will hold a bailout referendum on July 5, as a way to search for a solution to his nation’s ongoing debt crisis.

In his televised address, the BBC quoted Tsipras, as saying that the austerity measures put in place now by the creditors were humiliating and unbearable, and therefore there was a need for a referendum.

The Greek government had earlier rejected the proposals, aimed at avoiding the country defaulting on its debt.

Kuwait mourns for dead after Shia mosque attack

Kuwait was observing a day of mourning on Saturday for the 27 people who were killed during a terror strike on a Shia mosque during Friday prayers.

Another 227 people were wounded in the Imam Sadiq Mosque in Kuwait City, reports the BBC.

An Islamic State-affiliated group was quoted, as saying that it was responsible for the attack.

The IS has already carried out similar attacks in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Friday’s attack was the first on a Shia mosque in Kuwait.

A top-level Indian American executive has quit micro-blogging site Twitter to pursue some exciting new projects, the latest in a string of high-profile departures.

The exit of Rishi Garg, Twitter’s head of mergers and acquisitions, comes weeks after Twitter said it is replacing its CEO Dick Costolo with co-founder Jack Dorsey as an interim CEO, USA Today reported.

One of two escaped US prisoners killed by police

New York City Police has confirmed that it has killed one of the two murderers who dramatically escaped from a New York State prison after weeks of being on the run.

The BBC reported that Richard Matt, 49, was shot dead in the woodlands near the town of Malone, about 50-kilometers from the prison.

David Sweat, another convicted murderer, however,remains at large, the report further states.

The pair escaped through the prison sewer system after using power tools to break out of their cell on June 6.

UN chief hails US’ same-sex marriage ruling

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has hailed the US decision to legalise same-sex marriage in all 50 states, a media report said on Saturday.

The US Supreme Court on Friday ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across the country that meant that the 14 states with bans will no longer be able to enforce them, Xinhua reported.

“The secretary-general welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court that paves the way for gay and lesbian Americans to have their relationships legally recognised, no matter what part of the country they live in,” deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Tunisia to shut down 80 ‘propagandist’ mosques post deadly beach attack

In the wake of the terror attack that left 39 people dead in a Tunisian resort town, the country has announced its decision to shut down at least 80 mosques accused of inciting violence.

Prime Minister Habib Essid remarked that the mosques, which operated outside state control, were spreading ‘venom’ and will be shut down within a week, reported the BBC.

The decision came after a gunman opened fire on tourists in the beach town of Sousse, killing dozens of people. The attack was claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ( ISIS).

Recent terror attacks in Kuwait, France and Tunisia have all hinted the needle of suspicion possible pointing to the ISIS.

Forest employees caught in red sanders smuggling in Kadapa

Seven forest employees were arrested in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, for their alleged involvement in smuggling of red sanders, police said on Saturday.

The accused were arrested by Kadapa police in a joint operation with anti-red sanders task force from Tirupathi late last evening. About 14 red sander logs worth Rs 9.28 lakh were recovered from their possession, Ontimitta Circle Inspector Ulasaiah said.

CBI to probe foreign funds to Teesta-linked firm, bank A/C frozen

In fresh trouble for social activist Teesta Setalvad, government on Friday asked CBI to probe the receipt of over Rs 3 crore by private firm Sabrang Communication and Publishing Pvt Limited (SCPPL) linked to her from foreign donors, including US-based Ford Foundation, in alleged violation of FCRA rules.

In a parallel move, government froze the bank account of the firm located in Juhu, Mumbai, as the Home Ministry claimed that the firm was not authorised to receive funds from abroad as it was not registered under Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA).

China’s economy to grow by 6.93% in Q2

China`s economy will grow by 6.93 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, according to a report.The report by the National Academy of Economic Strategy (NAES), which is affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences on Friday said the growth forecast is lower than the 7-percent annual growth target, but 0.13 percentage points higher than the earlier NAES forecast, reported Xinhua news agency.

Why Haryana parents want their wards to fail?

More than 25,000 such requests have been received from parents from across the state, mainly from rural areas, as most of them say their children are not fit to be promoted, say state education department officials.
