Nadda assures to take up the issue of autonomy for NEIGRIHMS

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda today assured of taking up the issue of granting autonomy to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) here, with the Centre.

The decision of granting autonomy would have to be taken by the central Cabinet and it would also require an Act of Parliament, Nadda told faculty members, medical students and staff after chairing the institute’s Governing Council.

Hyundai to enter mass-market SUV segment with Creta

Korean auto major Hyundai is gunning for the leadership position in the mass-market sports utility vehicle segment in India with its new model, Creta, which will be launched next month.

The company’s Indian arm, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), has invested Rs 1,000 crore on the development of its upcoming five-seater model. It will compete with the likes of Mahindra & Mahindra, Renault, Nissan, Ford and Tata Motors in the volume segment of SUVs.

‘Black Friday’ triple attacks prompt London to beef up security at major events

With three terror attacks rocking France, Tunisia and Kuwait on so-called ‘Black Friday,’ security has been beefed up in London as two major events take place in the city.

Man under influence of alcohol commits suicide in UP

A 48-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his room in Govind Nagar area here, police said today.

Haradaya Naryan, an alcoholic, was in an inebriated state last night when he went to his room and hanged himself from the ceiling. He was found hanging by his family members, they added.

On receiving information, the police rushed to the spot and recovered the body which has been sent for post-mortem.

Police is investigating into the matter, they added.

AIDS epidemic may rebound in five years

Experts have warned that existing efforts against AIDS and HIV aren’t enough and if the countries, which are most affected, do not amp up their efforts to curb the spread of AIDS, the epidemic may rebound in just five years time.

Report from the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission showed that the rate of new HIV infections was not falling fast enough even though unprecedented progress has been made to increase access to HIV treatment globally.

A new study has suggested that a form of “virtual-reality” therapy may help alcohol addicts reduce their craving for booze.

Chung-Ang University researchers said they are optimistic about the potential for virtual reality as a therapy for alcohol use disorders.

Senior researcher Doug Hyun Han said that this technology is already popular in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, adding that it has been used to treat phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Car in Rajasthan CM’s convoy hit by TV channel vehicle

A vehicle in the convoy of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was said to have been hit on Saturday by a TV channel’s car as she was headed to the airport here on her way to New Delhi.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the car in Raje’s convoy “was hit by a vehicle of TV channel obstructing the way”. However, there was no mention of anybody being hurt in the incident.

In a statement here, the CMO added, “At a few places, accidents were about to occur as Raje’s convoy was on way to airport and the electronic media followed her.”

How brains form first impressions

A new study has revealed how our brains can form first impressions quickly.

Scientists at the University of Edinburgh and the Aix Marseille Universite examined why volunteers who were shown hundreds of pictures, some with animals and some without, were able to detect animals in as little as one-tenth of a second.

They found that one of the first parts of the brain to process visual information, the primary visual cortex, can control this fast response, rather than more complex parts of the brain being required, as previously thought.

South Korea fears MERS may have spread to new hospital

South Korea today said it was closely monitoring a hospital in eastern Seoul over fears that hundreds of people there may have been exposed to the deadly MERS virus.

A 70-year-old woman who caught Middle East Respiratory Syndrome while visiting an infected relative in a different hospital was feared to have spread the virus to the new site.

“We are focusing our efforts in tracing contacts and isolating people who came close to this patient”, a senior health ministry official told journalists today.

Kerry leaves for Iran talks as deadline for deal nears

US Secretary of State John Kerry, still on crutches after breaking his leg, headed to Vienna today looking to seal a legacy-making nuclear deal with Iran.

Celkon launches first manufacturing plant in Telangana

Indian mobile phones-maker Celkon on Friday launched its first state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Medchal, Telangana, a company statement here said.

The manufacturing unit is 30,000 square feet in area and is ready to start production from Day One.

The unit will start with four production lines which will deliver a production capacity of two lakh units per month.

The production lines will be increased to 12 and the production is expected to touch five lakh units per month within the next quarter.

High BP linked to reduced Alzheimer’s risk

People with a genetic tendency to high blood pressure (BP) have a lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease, a new study has found.

But the connection may have more to do with anti-hypertension medication than high blood pressure itself.

“It’s likely that this protective effect is coming from antihypertensive drugs,” said co-author John Kauwe, associate professor of biology at Brigham Young University, US.

The study analysed genetic data from 17,008 individuals with Alzheimer’s and 37,154 people without the disease.
