Ace Indian archer Deepika Kumari outclassed Chang Hye Jin of Korea in straight sets to clinch the bronze medal in the women’s individual recurve event of the World Cup, here today.

Seeded ninth in the event, Deepika came out all guns blazing to deflate her second-seeded opponent 6 (26, 29, 26, 28)- 2 (25, 26, 28, 27) to come up with a clean performance.

Korea though did not return disappointed as their archers stood first and second on the podium with Deepika at third.

No decision on Indo-Pak cricket series: Sushma Swaraj

No decision has yet been taken on Indo-Pak cricket series, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today.

Her remarks came in the backdrop of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar Khan’s recent visit to India to push for resumption of Indo-Pak cricket ties.

Khan, in a joint press statement with BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya in Kolkata, proposed a series comprising three Tests, five ODIs and two T20s in UAE in December this year. The BCCI has, however, not given any categorical statement yet on the proposed series and the venue.

Volkswagen mulls to roll out India-specific Sedan next year

German auto major Volkswagen is working on plans to roll out an ‘India-specific’ Sedan next year, a top official of the company said today.

“It will be a compact Sedan and compatible with Indian conditions. The rollout will be most likely during next year,” Volkswagen Managing Director Thierry Lespiaucq told reporters here. He declined to divulge price details, but said it won’t be below Rs 5 lakh.

BMW launches 6 Series Gran Coupe priced Rs 1.21 cr

German luxury carmaker BMW today launched an updated version of its ‘6 Series Gran Coupe’, priced up to Rs 1.21 crore (ex showroom Delhi).

The model will come in two variants—the BMW 640d Eminence priced at Rs 1.14 crore and the 640d Design Pure Experience version tagged at Rs 1.21 crore.

The company introduced the new car at the preview of the BMW India Bridal Fashion Week 2015 to be held in the Capital from July 15-19.

40-year-old tribal woman gang-raped in Madhya Pradesh

In a shocking incident, a 40-year-old tribal woman was allegedly gang-raped and tortured by six men in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh.

As per reports, the woman was raped as the men suspected her of practicing black magic. In incident occurred at Pohri village of Shivpuri district in northern Madhya Pradesh.

Reports said that the men attacked her brutally and even tried to insert a rod in her private parts.

The woman has been shifted to a medical college in Gwalior where she is battling for life.

The police have registered a case and arrested all the accused.

Sensex rises 322 points on rate cut hopes; auto, bank up

Staging a surprise comeback, the benchmark BSE Sensex today surged by 322 points to 27,828.44 on across-the-board buying in blue-chip stocks as investors started building fresh long positions in the new series on anticipation of a possible rate cut.

“Much to market surprise, equity benchmarks gained nearly one and half percent amid negative global cues. The recovery was reflection of the optimism among the participants ahead of the release of GDP data,” Jayant Manglik, President-retail distribution at Religare Securities.

Sensex reverses 3-week winning run, slides 129 pts

In a volatile trade, the benchmark BSE Sensex snapped its last 3-week gaining streak, ending lower 129 points at 27,828.44 due to selling pressure in view of May futures and options expiry and ahead of RBI’s policy meet next week.

The Nifty, too, fell 25.30 points, or 0.30 per cent, to settle at 8,433.65.

Trading for the week began on a negative note. Telecom, cement and pharma stocks led the rally as key benchmark indices surged on the last trading session of the week.

Have an HDFC account? Paper slips at ATM’s to go, SMSes new ‘in’

The second largest private sector lender HDFC Bank has decided to discontinue issuing slips after cash withdrawals at ATMs and will alert the customer through SMSes.

“We have decided to discontinue issuing receipts after cash withdrawals. The SMS which will be sent will have detailed information on the withdrawn amount and the balance in account,” a senior bank official told PTI.

The bank is piloting the initiative at a few ATMs at present and will roll out the same across its network of over 11,700 ATMs by the end of June, the official added.

Your new 3-page ITR forms are here; last date for filing returns extended till August 31

The Finance Ministry today came out with new three-page income tax return (ITR) forms, dropping the controversial provision for mandatory disclosure of foreign trips and dormant bank accounts, while it also extended the last date of filing to August 31.

The new forms—ITR 2 and ITR 2A—will have only three pages and other details will have to be filled in schedules, said a Finance Ministry statement.

Dining out, travelling and paying bills become dearer; Service Tax stands at 14% from today

People will have to shell out more from Monday while using mobiles, eating out and travelling as the service tax rate goes up to 14 per cent.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his Budget had proposed to raise service tax from 12.36 per cent (including education cess) to 14 per cent. The proposal takes effect from June 1. The tax is levied on all services, expect a small negative list.

Cabinet clears signing of pact between India, Sweden on MSMEs

The government today approved signing of an agreement between India and Sweden to promote cooperation in the MSME sector.

The cooperation opens up doors of new opportunities for the domestic MSME sector by way of new markets, joint ventures, sharing of best practices and technology collaborations, among others.

“The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval for signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Sweden on cooperation in the field of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises,” an official statement said.

Shakuntala Gamlin complains to Jung against Delhi minister

Senior IAS officer Shakuntala Gamlin, whose appointment as the acting chief secretary had triggered a turf war between the Lt Governor and AAP Government, has complained to Najeeb Jung accusing Industries Minister Satyendra Jain of putting pressure on her over conversion of industrial plots from leasehold to freehold.

In her letter to Jung, Gamlin alleged that despite the fact that land does not come under Delhi Government, the Industry Minister put pressure on her to submit a note for the council of ministers proposing conversion of the industrial land from leasehold to freehold.

DJB commissions new peripheral water main line

Delhi Jal Board on Sunday commissioned its new peripheral water main line which will benefit a section of people, who were earlier dependent on tankers for water supply.

The regions that will benefit from it include Sadhna Enclave, Savitri Nagar, Seikh Sarai Ph-1, Soami Nagar and Chirag Dilli Village.

According to the DJB, the length of this new water main is 3.5 km and it runs from Malviya Nagar Booster Pumping Station to Chirag Dilli. The total cost of the project is Rs 4 cr.

Bengaluru man torches prayer hall to frame neighbours; arrested

The owner of a building housing a Christian prayer hall here was among two persons arrested today for allegedly setting on fire the hall in a bid to frame two neighbours involved in a land dispute with him.

Police said Krishnappa, who owns the building in Vidyaranyapura locality, and his accomplice Balaraj were arrested within hours of the incident.

“We have arrested Balaraj and Krishnappa for setting on fire a Christian prayer hall in early hours today,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) T R Suresh told PTI here.

91-year-old man tries electoral luck in Karnataka

Astonishing it may seem, a 91-year-old man is trying his electoral luck in the Gram Panchayat elections in Karnataka.

Thimmaiah is contesting for Gandabommanahalli gram panchayat in Kudligi taluk of Ballari district, as the two-phase GP elections across the state began today.

This is not the first time Thimmaiah is an electoral aspirant; he had in 2010 contested, but lost as he had no paraphernalia for a fairly good election campaign.

Father of seven children, Thimmaiah grows groundnut on his five-acre land. After his wife’s death he is living with his daughter.

Heat, lightning kills two in Karnataka

The intense heat wave prevailing in Karnataka has claimed one life while another person was fatally struck by lightning in Kalaburgi district, an official said on Saturday.

Three people were hospitalised after they were also hit by the lightning on Friday.

The Met department forecast rain for the entire state of Karnataka on Saturday.

“A mason constructing a house died due to the heat wave on Thursday whereas one person was struck by lightning on Friday. The lightning also led to hospitalisation of three more people,” said Vivek Bansal, Deputy Commissioner, Kalaburgi.

Decision on appeal against Jayalalithaa acquittal as early as possible: Karnataka govt

Karnataka government would take a call “as early as possible” on “merits” on the issue of filing an appeal against acquittal of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the disproportionate assets case, state Law Minister T B Jayachandra said Saturday.

“We (Government) had sought many clarifications and they have been answered by the Advocate General (Ravivarma Kumar). On merits where are we – I am examining it, and I will take a final call as early as possible,” he told reporters here.

Confident Mamata will come along to Bangladesh, says Sushma

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday that she is “confident” West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will travel to Bangladesh along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week and not do a redux of the 2011 trip with then prime minister Manmohan Singh.

To a query asking if the government was certain Banerjee would not at the last moment decide to drop out of the team, which had caused immense embarrassment to the then government, she said: “She will certainly go, I can say with confidence.”
