Criminal carrying cash reward arrested in Muzaffarnagar

A criminal carrying reward of Rs 50,000 on his head and wanted in over a dozen cases including loot and murder was arrested here, police said on Monday.

The accused identified as Imran alias Tota, was arrested yesterday, SSP KB Singh told reporters.

He was wanted in connection with over a dozen cases of loot and murder, added Singh.

Modi to visit Israel, 1st by an Indian PM

Narendra Modi will be travelling to Israel, the first by an Indian Prime Minister to the Jewish country with which bilateral defence cooperation is on an upswing.

No dates have been finalised for Modi’s visit which will take place on mutually convenient dates, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.

Swaraj said she will be travelling to Israel this year, besides Palestine and Jordan.

India had established “full” diplomatic relationship with Israel in 1992 though it had recognised the country in 1950. No Indian Prime Minister or President has ever visited that country.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islami Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, on Monday asked the Pakistani armed forces to launch a military operation against women wearing jeans all over Pakistan.

The Khap Panchayat in UP in August 2014 had passed a command that banned wearing of jeans and use of mobile phones by an unmarried girl. The panchayat directly blamed girls wearing jeans for eve-teasing and rape incidents.

Immunotherapy drug helps common lung cancer patients live longer

Scientists have found that immunotherapy drug nivolumab, increased the survival people suffering from squamous-non-small cell lung cancer.

On an average, the drug helped the patients live longer than those who received chemotherapy. Squamous non-small cell lung cancer accounts for 25 to 30 percent of all lung malignancies.

Results also showed that after a year, the nivolumab group had nearly doubled the survival rate (42 percent) of the chemotherapy patients (24 percent).

In a startling revelation it has come to light that the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has blocked eggs in anganwadi meals just because he is a strict vegetarian.

In the tribal areas of Alirajpur, Mandla and Hoshangabad districts, where children suffer from malnutrition, eggs would have been a rich source of protein in their diet.

However, when the Chief Minister’s permission was sought for including eggs in the anganwadi meals, he immediately turned down the proposal, according to an Indian Express report.

Congress on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring BJP’s poll promises and harping only on the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme and also slammed him for saying that the issue involving the demand by ex-servicemen was a “vexed” one.

“Unfortunately, he (Modi) did not touch upon even a single of these issues. Rather, he chose to further compound the problem, confuse the entire issue by creating another flutter by saying that OROP is a very complex issue,” senior Congress leader Ajay Maken told reporters here.

Cash for vote scam: TDP Telangana MLA sent to jail

TDP Telangana MLA Revanth Reddy, who was caught while allegedly trying to give bribe to a nominated MLA to vote for his party’s nominee in today’s Telangana Legislative Council polls, was arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

The court allowed Reddy to cast his vote in the polls.

ACB Director General A K Khan told PTI that Reddy and two others were sent to 14-days judicial custody.

“Reventh Reddy was allowed by the court to cast his vote in the MLC elections today,” the ACB Chief said.

Bihar Police arrest four Maoists

Four Maoists were on Monday arrested while they were allegedly making plans to extort levy from under-construction infrastructure projects.

Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar Mishra said raids were conducted during the early hours on the basis of information provided by hardcore Maoist Dasai Ram, who was arrested in Motihari in East Champaran district yesterday.

“The arrested Maoists used to extort levy or protection money from under-construction infrastructure projects in the area, and were making plans to do so when our teams surrounded them,” Mishra said.

92-year-old Harriette Thompson oldest woman to finish marathon

Harriette Thomson, a 92-year old cancer patient, has become the oldest woman to finish a marathon.

She completed the 26.2-mile-long San Diego Marathon on Sunday.

Charlotte resident Thomson ran the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in seven hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds.

Having survived three bouts of oral cancer, she crossed the line with her 56-year old son Brenny, the BBC has reported.

Thompson, aged 92 years and 65 days, overtook the record set by 92-years and 19 day-old Gladys Burrill during the Honolulu Marathon in 2010. (ANI)

Indian found dead in Kuwait

An Indian national working as a shepherd in Kuwait has been found dead in a remote desert area in Kuwait, with reports saying he died of thirst and dehydration.

The the body of the Indian was found on May 28 in the desert area in Qashaniya, the Indian embassy in the country has said.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the Indian national died of thirst and de-hydration as his body was found in a very arid spot, media reports said.

The latest Google Doodle commemorative logo pays tribute to yesteryear actress Nargis Dutt on her 86th birthday.

A drawing of the late actress holding her dupatta with both hands is featured in the place of the Google logo.

Nargis, whose real name was Fatima Rashid, was born on June 1, 1929.

She made her screen debut as a child in “Talash-E-Haq” in 1935, but her acting career began in 1942 with “Tamanna”.

If all goes well, a modern perfume manufacturing plant would soon be set up in Kannauj, the parliamentary constituency of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav, officials said on Monday.

Kannauj is widely known for traditional ‘itra’. Perfumes are extracted from flowers, leaves and even ‘mitti’ – earth – in Kannauj.

With the perfume industry there in a slump for the past few years, local traders have been demanding a revival package from the state government as also an initiative for marketing the local perfumes.

Telangana TDP MLA sent to jail in cash-for-vote scam

A city court here on Monday sent Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA A. Revanth Reddy to a 14-day judicial custody on the charge of trying to bribe a nominated MLA to vote for a TDP-BJP candidate in the election to Telangana Legislative Council.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), which arrested Revanth on Sunday night after laying a trap, produced him before a magistrate at his residence.

The magistrate sent him and his two aides to judicial custody but directed the police to allow him to cast vote in the election before shifting him to jail.

Patients with low blood pressure before an operation are at an increased risk of death during or after the surgery than those with preoperative high blood pressure, say researchers, including Indian-origin scientists.

“While high blood pressure control is important for long-term health, high blood pressure itself does not impose a significant risk of postoperative death,” said the study by Puja Myles and Sudhir Venkatesan from the University of Nottingham in Britain and colleagues.

EU sanctions against Russia appear to be working, says British politician

British politician and former Member of Parliament for Kensington Malcolm Rifkind has said that the European Union sanctions against Russia are working, following Moscow’s ban on 89 European officials, politicians and military leaders from entering the country.

According to BBC, UK’s former foreign secretary and ex-deputy PM Nick Clegg are among those barred from entering Russia.

EU sanctions were imposed on Russia following the Ukraine crisis.

Rifkind said that Russia “would not have reacted unless they felt very sore at what had happened”.

Retired Nobel Prize winner Dr. Leon M. Lederman’s Nobel Prize fetched him 765,002 dollars at an auction recently.

The 92-year-old experimental physicist, who now suffers from dementia, had put up his 1988 gold medal for sale due to piled up medical bills, News.com.au has reported.

The online auction conducted by Nate D. Sanders Auctions went into overtime until a final bid went unchallenged for 30 minutes, and his wife, Ellen Lederman, expressed that she was shocked for it was just something that was sitting in their cabinet for 20 years.

Sufficient evidence found against Axact, claims Pak FIA director

The Sindh director of Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, Shahid Hayat Khan , has claimed that sufficient evidence has been found against IT firm Axact, which is accused of being involved in a fake degree scam.

According to Dawn News, Khan told the media that his organisation had collected sufficient information to prove the wrongdoings of Axact in a court, with evidence being collected with the help of forensic team and the company’s internal email system.

Some people linked with the IT firm had also provided evidence to the investigators, said officials.

Google celebrates Bollywood actress Nargis` 86th birth anniversary

Google has marked late Bollywood actress Nargis Dutt’s 86th birthday with its doodle.

Born in Calcutta (Kolkata), the actress, who was married to late Sunil Dutt and had three children with him, including actor Sanjay Dutt, had started her career as a child star in the Indian film industry at the age of six in 1935.

She went on to be one of the most renowned actresses in Bollywood and had won awards for acclaimed films ‘Mother India,’ and ‘Raat Aur Din.’

Nargis was also the first film actress to be conferred by the Government of India with the Padma Shri.
