Sri Lanka said on Monday that it will continue to engage with India on the fishermen issue to seek satisfactory short-term and long-term solutions.

The Foreign Ministry said it was aware of remarks by the Minister of Fisheries who had said that he had rejected a proposal by India to resolve the fishing issue, reports Xinhua.

The ministry said Sri Lanka recognized that the issue of Indian fishermen fishing in Sri Lankan waters required the careful attention of the authorities on both sides, especially in view of the impact on livelihood of both Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen.

A 23-year-old undertrial, who was lodged in the district jail here in connection with a murder case, died today following severe stomach ache, jail authorities said.

Ram Avtar who was in jail since October last year, complained of severe stomach ache this morning and after preliminary treatment at the jail hospital, he was rushed to the district hospital where he later succumbed, Jail Superintendent Arvind Pandey said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, he added.

Meanwhile, father of the deceased has blamed the jail authorities for Avtar’s death.

A meeting of a panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been called today to decide on the chiefs of Central Information Commission (CIC) and Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).

Today’s meeting has been convened at the Prime Minister’s residence and will be attended by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh, official sources have confirmed. The last meeting of the panel held in New Dellhi on May 23 had remained inconclusive.

Kris Jenner has denied reports that her son Rob Kardashian checked himself into a rehab.

The 59-year-old reality TV matriarch said the reports of her son checked into a 60-day Palm Beach rehab centre for alcohol and drug abuse were “completely fabricated”.

The IMF has said it has lowered its growth forecast for Ukraine’s war battered economy to minus nine percent, due in large part to “the unresolved conflict in the East.”

The dismal projection — down from a forecast in April of minus five percent — followed a two-week-long visit by an International Monetary Fund delegation to Kiev earlier this month.

Inflation in Ukraine will hit an estimated 46 percent, officials said, largely due to the skyrocketing price of oil and a large exchange rate depreciation in February.

Bangladesh is set to honour former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his outstanding support for the country’s independence from Pakistan in 1971 when he was a Lok Sabha member.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman familiar with the process said Bangladesh will hand over Mr Vajpayee’s “Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his upcoming visit to the country from June 6.

Mr Vajpayee, who is unwell, could not visit Bangladesh to receive the honour.

The benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 51 points to 27,880.15 in early trade today on the back of increased buying by funds and investors helped by positive growth data for the March quarter.

The 30-share index, which had gained 321,73 points in the previous session at the beginning of the June series in the derivatives segment, gained 51.71 points, or 0.18 per cent, to trade at 27,880.15.

Stocks of realty, banking, IT, metal, PSU and power led the gains.

An 18-year-old girl from Diva was hacked to death by her boyfriend late last night in Diva’s Sadguru Nagar locality, a police official said here today.

Police inspector D M Patil of the Mumbra police station told PTI that the accused who was aged around 20 years has been arrested by the police and charged under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, he said.

A Delhi court has acquitted a man of the charges of sexually assaulting and threatening a 17- year-old girl after she resiled from her statement.

Additional Sessions Judge Gautam Manan absolved Delhi resident Sachin, saying there was no evidence to establish the committal of the offences under section 8(sexual assault) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and under sections 354(molestation) and 506(criminal intimidation) ofthe IPC.

Pakistan is expected to discuss with the US the alleged role of India’s external spy agency RAW in abetting violence in the country during Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry’s meetings with top Obama administration officials, a media report said today.

The decision to raise the matter with the US was taken after a series of allegations by top Pakistani leaders against RAW’s support for militancy, The Express Tribune reported.

A 92-year-old cancer survivor rocked her way into the record books Sunday, becoming the oldest woman to finish a marathon.

Harriette Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina, completed Sunday’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego in 7 hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds. She was mobbed by well-wishers as she crossed the finish line.

“I’m fine, they’re really pampering me here,” Thompson said in a firm, joyful voice as people all around her shouted congratulations.

This was her 17th Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and, by far, the hardest.

Crying foul over ruling TRS’s alleged “unethical politics”, opposition TDP sought postponement of the legislative council polls in Telangana even as the exercise got underway this morning at the Assembly premises.

Fourteen persons including two women, were injured in stone pelting when a clash broke out between two groups over a minor issue in Shamli district, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred yesterday at Sunehti village when two persons, Satender and Asif, had a fight at a barber’s shop, over who would get his services first, police said.

The clash turned violent with they and their supporter pelting stones at one another, they said.

Senior police officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, they said.
