Haryana panchayat orders shoe-beating of gang-rape accused

In a shocking incident, a panchayat (village council) in Haryana’s Faridabad district “sentenced” two youths accused of gang-raping a minor girl in May to be beaten with shoes five times each and a fine of Rs.50,000.

Intervening in the case, the National Commission for the Scheduled Castes has now directed Haryana Police to register a case against the panchayat and arrest the sarpanch and other members.

Yaya Toure confirms to stay at Manchester City

Yaya Toure has confirmed that he will stay on at Manchester City after chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak told him that the club would not consider selling him amid interest from Inter Milan.

Poor mental health to cost Indian economy dearly: Report

With one in every five person in India suffering from some form of mental disorder, mental health-related cost would account for 20 percent of economic loss from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) between 2012 and 2030, says a new report.

The “Aarogya Bharat” report by the Healthcare Federation of India (NATHEALTH) and leading management consulting firm Bain & Company estimated an economic loss of $6.2 trillion due to NCDs between 2012 and 2030.

Zaffrani Pulao

Ingredients

1/2 cup basmati rice cooked

1/4 cup ghee

3 Tbsp butter

1/4 cup raisins

1/4 cup almonds

1/4 cup cashew nuts

1/4 cup chironji seeds

1/4 cup jaggery

A few saffron strands

1/2 cup milk

Method

Heat a deep, heavy cooking vessel and add the ghee. Once the ghee is hot add the dry fruits and fry them until they are a lovely, rich golden in color.

Now add the cooked rice in the ghee until all of the rice is richly coated with the ghee and dry fruit.

Ingredients

1 whole chicken (with skin)

100gms butter

500ml milk

2 sprigs sage leaves

11 cloves of garlic

1 baguette

Lemon zest

Method

For Chicken:

Heat the butter in a pan.

Meanwhile, season the chicken with salt and pepper.

Add the seasoned chicken into the hot butter and sear until golden brown.

Add sage leaves for aroma, take them out from pan once fried and keep aside.

Add cloves of garlic, milk, lemon zest and fresh sage leaves in the pan.

Rajapaksa’s wife questioned by Lankan police over graft

Sri Lanka’s former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was on Monday grilled by police over alleged corruption in an NGO which she ran during her husband Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency, the latest in a series of questioning of his family members.

She was questioned by the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) at a location outside the headquarters for over two hours, sources said. She was summoned for an inquiry over alleged corruption in connection with a bank account of the ‘Carlton Siriliya Saviya’ Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.

Volvo Auto India has appointed Tom von Bonsdorff as the Managing Director of the company with immediate effect.

More Maggi Samples Being Tested, Government Says Brand Ambassadors Can be Held Liable

Government today said Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is testing more Maggi samples collected from different states in the wake of UP FSDA finding monosodium glutamate and lead in excess of the prescribed limit in the instant noodles.

Boy’s Face Slashed with Blade for Refusing to Buy Cigarette in Delhi

An unidentified youth slashed a minor boy’s face with a blade after the latter refused to bring him a cigarette from a nearby shop in southeast Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar area.

The incident took place last night when 16-year-old Rajesh, who lives with his family in Madangir area, was returning home from somewhere.

“On his way home, a youth stopped the teenager and asked him to bring him a cigarette from a nearby shop. When Rajesh refused to do so, the youth slashed his cheek with a blade and fled the spot,” a police official said.

Delhi University Admission: Over 1.3 Lakh Applications Received Online

Number of online registrations for Delhi University’s undergraduate courses shot up to over 1.3 lakh on sunday.

“The number of registrations till 5.30 PM on sunday were 1,35,549. A total of 68,857 applicants have already made the payment,” a senior varsity official said.

Since the online registrations process opened on May 28 the university has received 46,964 applications in general category, 14,106 OBC, 6,404 SC, 1,290 ST and 145 in Persons With Disability category, he said.

You may get a long and healthy life simply by balancing your protein and carbohydrate intake, without drastically cutting down your calorie intake.

A research done in mice shows that low protein, high carbohydrate diets can provide benefits similar to those obtained with calorie restriction.

“We have shown that when compared head-to-head, mice got the same benefits from a low protein, high carbohydrate diet as a 40 percent calorie restriction diet,” said senior author Stephen Simpson, academic director of the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre.

Responding a yawn with a yawn is not restricted to humans and a few other mammals alone as researchers have now found that it also happens with members of a bird species of Australian origin.

Contagious yawning occurs between budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), also known as parakeets that are often kept in cages as pets.

“To date, this is the first experimental evidence of contagious yawning in a non-mammalian species,” said study leader Andrew Gallup of the State University of New York in the US.

Developed by British ophthalmologists, the Portable Eye Examination Kit (Peek) app is likely to change the lives of people living with poor eye sight but without access to care in remote areas.

Govt mulling to sell 8 ITDC hotels to strategic investors

The government is mulling to sell eight loss-making ITDC hotels to strategic investors and will soon work out the modalities of valuation and mode of sale.

Officials from Tourism Ministry and the department of disinvestment in the Finance Ministry are expected to meet soon to decide the way forward, official sources said.

“Timing, valuation, ways of selling and potential investors are the key areas. We would need to figure out first before proceeding with the sale,” a source said.

Gold hits 3-week low on subdued demand, global cues

Gold prices on Monday drifted by Rs 105 to trade at a three-week low of Rs 27,225 per ten grams at the bullion market owing to slackened demand from jewellers amid a weak global trend.

Silver remained under selling pressure and traded lower by Rs 175 to Rs 38,400 per kg.

Marketmen said low demand from jewellers amid a weak global trend mainly kept pressure on gold prices.

Globally, gold traded lower by 0.24 percent to USD 1,187.10 an ounce and silver by 0.39 percent to USD 16.63 an ounce in London in early trade.

ATF price hiked by 7.5%; non-subsidised LPG by Rs 10.50

Jet fuel price was hiked by a steep 7.5 per cent on Monday and rates of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) by Rs 10.50 per cylinder in step with global firming of rates.

Price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), or jet fuel, in Delhi was raised by Rs 3,744.08 per kilolitre (kl), or 7.54 per cent, to Rs 53,353.92, oil companies announced today.

On May 1, ATF price was hiked by a marginal Rs 272 per kl or 0.5 per cent to Rs 49,609.84.
