A Delhi-based billionaire, Bhanwarlal Raghunath Doshi, embraced asceticism and became a monk in a lavish ceremony in Ahmedabad.

The plastic tycoon and owner of property worth six billions opted for asceticism under the discipleship of Jain Acharya, Shri Gunratna Surishwarji Maharaj.

Before embracing Jain monastic life, Doshi said that he was giving up his property worth billions to achieve something even bigger.

Wife, kids of excise officer murdered in Delhi

Wife of an Excise officer and his two minor children were allegedly found murdered inside their residence in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi here today.
The victims have been identified as Deepmala alias Deepa (34), son Saksham (9) and daughter Shaily (2).

The incident came to light around 8 pm when the Excise Officer Amit returned home.

According to police, Deepmala was found hacked to death in the bedroom, while the kids were in the bathroom.

All of them had injuries caused by sharp objects.

Single-line Metro operation on Central Secretariat-Mandi House section today

Services between the Central Secretariat and Mandi House stations would run on single line for one hour on Tuesday to facilitate inspection of the Mandi House-Income Tax Office (ITO) section, Delhi Metro official had said on Monday.

Train services between the two stations, which fall on Line-6, operating from Mandi House to Badarpur stations, would run on a single line from 11 am to 12.15 pm.

In a veiled criticism of Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, its expelled leader Prashant Bhushan today suggested that the party was “deviating” from the path of principled politics while Yogendra Yadav said as a person grows in stature he “drifts away” from public.

Without taking any name, Bhushan, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, referred to the turn of events that led to his expulsion from the party in April saying his detractors had “insulted” themselves by throwing muck at him. AAP MLA Pankaj Pushkar was also present in the event.

Light rains in Delhi, mercury dips

Overcast skies followed by scattered rains in different parts of the national capital provided relief to Delhiites from oppressive heat today as both the maximum and minimum temperatures settled below normal.

Light rains were received by many areas in the city. Safadarjung observatory recorded 1.2 mm rainfall while Palam observatory registered 5.0 mm rainfall, MeT department said.

Light showers were also recorded at Lodhi Road, Ridge, Ayanagar, New Delhi and Najafgarh stations. Areas including Pitampura, Pusa, Narela, Delhi University and Akshradham remained dry.

French hostage in Yemen appears in video, appeals for help

A French woman held hostage in Yemen appeared for the first time in a video, appealing for her release.

Isabelle Prime, who works as a consultant with ties to the World Bank, was abducted from Sanaa along with her Yemeni translator in February. The translator was released shortly afterward, but there was no word until now on Prime.

In her first video since her disappearance, Prime appeared to be under severe duress, sitting in the desert dressed in a black robe and looking frail and anguished.

Ms. Samantha Elauf was denied a job in 2008 by Abercrombie & Fitch Co Clothing Store in Oklahoma because she wearing head scarf (Hijab). She filed a petition in a court which decided on a 8-1 vote a win to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a federal agency which sued the company on her behalf.

The company denied Ms. Elauf the job on the pretext that wearing the scarf violated “Look Policy” of the company. This policy was meant to promote the brand’s East Coast collegiate image.

ISRO’s three major centres get new directors

Three major centres of Indian Space Research Organisation, including Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, will have new Directors from Monday.

Dr K Sivan, Distinguished Scientist and currently Director of Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Thiruvananthapuram, will take over as the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), also at Thiruvananthapuram, ISRO posted on its Facebook page.

He will take over from M Chandradathan, who will superannuate by end May 2015, it said.

Throwing up a fresh legal challenge to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, Karnataka government on Monday decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against her acquittal by the state High Court in the 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.

Three weeks after her acquittal, suspense over the state’s move ended with the cabinet deciding to move an appeal in the apex court based on the advice tendered by the Law Department, Special Public Prosecutor and Advocate General.

Bengaluru records highest pre-monsoon rainfall in 10 years

Bengaluru has recorded 442.6 mm pre-monsoon rainfall this year, highest in the past 10 years, the Met Office said on Monday.

Even though the southwest monsoon is yet to hit the Kerala coast, Karnataka’s southern region, especially Bengaluru, has been blessed with bountiful pre-monsoon showers.

The Met Office has forecast rainfall for the entire state on Monday. Bengaluru might experience a thunderstorm also.

US official calls for Myanmar citizenship for Rohingya

A senior US official today said that resettlement in a third country is not the answer to the swelling tide of boat people in Southeast Asia and called for Myanmar to give citizenship to Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution there.

Anne Richard, US Assistant Secretary of State for population, migration and refugees, said resettling all Rohingya refugees in the United States would entice others to leave their homeland.

UN chief condemns South Sudan’s expulsion of UN deputy

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is condemning the government of South Sudan for its decision to expel the UN deputy representative in the conflict-torn country.

The UN chief called on the government today to immediately reverse its decision to expel Toby Lanzer, saying he “has been instrumental in addressing the increasing humanitarian needs of conflict-affected communities in the country and ensuring that life-saving humanitarian assistance reaches the most vulnerable,” Ban’s spokesman said.

US launches largest trial of precision medicine in cancer

The United States launched the largest clinical trial of its kind today aimed at studying targeted therapies for cancer based on the genetic traits of tumors, a field known as precision medicine.

The US National Cancer Institute plans to enroll about 1,000 patients beginning in July, experts said at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago.

“This is the largest and most rigorous precision oncology trial in history,” said James Doroshow, deputy director of the National Cancer Institute, during a press conference at ASCO.

Authorities in Egypt have said they thwarted a major plot by banned Muslim Brotherhood against the country, a day ahead of the final decision on a death sentence recommendation against deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

Obama: No military solution to Iran’s nuclear program

US President Barack Obama has reached out to a skeptical Israeli public in an interview saying that only an agreement, not military action, can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Obama said “I can, I think, demonstrate, not based on any hope but on facts and evidence and analysis, that the best way to prevent Iran from having a nuclear weapon is a verifiable, tough agreement.”

Obama’s remarks come as an end-of-June deadline for an Iranian deal is fast approaching.

‘SKorea announces first two MERS deaths’

South Korea’s health ministry confirmed today that two people had died from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), the country’s first fatalities from the virus.

A 58-year-old woman, who had been treated as a suspected case of MERS, died of acute respiratory failure on Monday and tests later came back positive for the virus.

The other victim was a 71-year-old man who had been confirmed to have the virus several days ago. The Yonhap report did not say when the man died.

Kama Sutra Image appeared in Qatar Newspaper, Editor Quits

The editor of a popular daily newspaper in Qatar announced his resignation after the publication of a photograph depicting sex scenes from the Kama Sutra on Monday.

Jaber al-Harmi, editor in chief of Al-Sharq, stepped down after a picture appeared in the newspaper of a woman’s hands covered in traditional henna tattoos depicting scenes from the Kama Sutra, the famous Indian sex manual.

In a copy of the paper’s Monday edition seen by AFP, the picture was published in the health section above an article warning of the dangers of henna.

The Advisory Committee of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is actively considering imposing a ban on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and other social website. Dr. Faiz Asshari, in a statement said that imposing ban on social website is the right of the government. Many countries have imposed such bans in order to curb crimes.
