Gold gains in modest buying, silver plunges

Gold gained further momentum in lacklustre trade at the domestic bullion market here on stray demand from jewellery stockists and investors following better overseas cues.

On the other hand, silver moved down owing to sluggish industrial offtake.

Standard gold (99.5 purity) edged up by Rs 15 to finish at Rs 26,385 per 10 grams from Friday’s closing level of Rs 26,370.

Pure gold (99.9 purity) also went up by a similar margin to settle at Rs 26,535 per 10 grams against Rs 26,520.

Local train rams into dead end at Churchgate; 5 hurt, 3

A local train today crashed into the dead end at the Churchgate station here, injuring five passengers and disrupting the suburban train services on the Western Railway line.

Following the incident, the Western Railway (WR) has launched an inquiry and suspended the motorman of the local, its guard and loco inspector.

Flipkart launches online business campaign to educate sellers

E-commerce platform Flipkart has launched a nationwide campaign to educate sellers about taking their business online.

The campaign ‘Apne Sapne Jee Kar Dekho’ aims at educating entrepreneurs/manufacturers/SMEs about the advantages of getting their business up on Flipkart’s platform, the company said in a statement.

Flipkart, through the campaign will help new sellers with fast-track registrations to the platform and additionally provide special support services, such as dedicated pick-ups, product shoots, training on platform usage and payments.

Gurbaj completes his 200th International Cap

India midfielder Gurbaj Singh added another feather in his cap as he played his 200th international match when he took the field against Australia in the FIH Hockey World League Semi-Final here today.

The 26-year-old Gurbaj, who made his international debut in 2006 Doha Asian Games, is a regular member of national hockey team and has been a part of the team in various international tournaments.

Sensex, Nifty surge for 2nd straight week

Stocks: Both the indices, BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty, surged further by 496 points and 156 points, respectively, on persistent buying from investors on hopes of rate cut from Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in view of above-average monsoon rains.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its daily monsoon update showed that the southwest monsoon has been further advanced into remaining parts of north Arabian Sea. For the country as a whole, the cumulative rainfall during this year’s monsoon season was 24 per cent above the Long Period Average (LPA) until June 24.

Frauds can’t be wished away; banks among easy prey: RBI

Stating that banks and financial institutions are easy prey for fraudsters, RBI’s Deputy Governor R Gandhi has asked banks to remain constantly on vigil as those committing frauds always try to remain “one step ahead of the bankers, regulators and the police”.

Gandhi also said financial sector frauds often result in a systemic response of banks and the bankers’ reactions typically include withdrawal from lending, becoming risk averse, excessive collateralisation and even “efforts to recoup the losses through higher interest rates and charges”.

IS executes over 3,000 in Syria in year-long ‘caliphate’

The Islamic State group has executed more than 3,000 people in Syria, including hundreds of civilians, in the year since it declared its self-described “caliphate,” a monitor said today.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based group monitoring Syria’s conflict, said it had documented 3,027 executions by IS since June 29, 2014.

Among those executed are 1,787 civilians, including 74 children, said the Observatory.

Members of Sunni Shaitat tribe account for around half of the civilians murdered.

Four killed, 10 injured in bus-car collision in Raj

Four persons including a woman and a minor boy were killed on the spot and ten others injured in a head-on collision between a car and private bus in Sikar district today, police said.

The incident occurred at around 4 pm at Dharaji Mod in Ajeetgarh here when seven persons riding a car were returning to Delhi from Khatushyamji Temple in Sikar, they said.

Two men, one woman and a boy travelling in the car died on the spot while three injured were rushed to a hospital in Jaipur, they said.

The identities of the deceased is yet to be established, they said.

Rajan did not imply world facing new Great Depression: RBI

With Raghuram Rajan’s comments on 1930s-like problems resurfacing having created a flutter, the RBI today said the Governor did not imply there being an imminent risk of the world economy slipping again into the Great Depression as that was caused by “many factors”.

The Reserve Bank, however, added Rajan indeed said that “the policies followed by major central banks around the world were in danger of slipping into the kind of beggar-thy-neighbour strategies that were followed in the 1930s”.

PM urges farmers to increase pulse production

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked farmers to enhance pulses production to help India become self-sufficient and reduce imports by using one-fifth of their farming land to cultivate lentils.

Invoking former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” Modi asked farmers to try and grow pulses on part of their land.

He said, “Pulses production in the country is very low and I urge farmers that if they have five acres of farming land, at least one acre should be used to cultivate pulses.”

Fire burns down SBI branch office

A State Bank of India (SBI) branch on the ground floor of the multi-storeyed Panchanand building here was almost completely gutted in a fire today evening, officials said.

T T Nagar City Superintendent of Police R D Bhardwaj told PTI that investigations are on to find out the reason behind the outbreak of the fire.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Fire Brigade In-charge Sajid Khan said that firefighters reached the spot after they received information about the blaze at around 6.05 pm.

A committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal has suggested that use of fresh water should be prohibited and made an offence in order to maintain the minimum environmental flow of Yamuna river.

The principal committee, headed by Shashi Shekhar, the Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources, was constituted by the green panel on January 13 for implementing the “Maili se Nirmal Yamuna Revitalization Plan, 2017”.

AAP alleges deal between Cong, BJP over Tytler

AAP MLA Jarnail Singh today alleged a “deal” between Congress and BJP over the CBI’s admission to a Delhi court that no fresh FIR has been lodged against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection to 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Singh accused the BJP, SAD and Congress of “working in tandem” to absolve Tytler of his alleged involvement in the riots in which over 3,000 people died. Tytler has earlier been given a clean chit in the case.

2,402 cases solved at Lok Adalats in Greater Noida

2,402 cases related to electricity and other petty issues were today resolved by Lok Adalats held here today.

The courts also collected Rs. 2,21,510 as fine.

2,309 petty cases, 88 electricity cases and five of maintenance were disposed of by the Lok Adalats held at district and revenue courts by District Legal Services Authority.

Gangster Vikas Langarpuria held in Delhi

One of Delhi’s top 10 gangsters wanted for various serious crimes, including an attack on a former legislator, has been arrested, officials said on Sunday.

Vikas Langarpuria, 25, was arrested on Saturday night on a tip-off about his visit to a place here.

A notorious extortionist, he had in 2012 attacked former legislator from Najafgarh Bharat Singh, with his men forcing themselves inside Singh’s office and shooting him.

Nursing student fakes her abduction, keeps police on toes

A nursing student here kept the district police on their toes by concocting her own abduction just to “check their functioning”.

However, the 20-year-old girl was recovered and handed over to her parents without any action initiated against her, a senior police official said today.

The girl, a student at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, here called up her friends and told them that she was kidnapped by two persons on Friday.

After her friends informed the local police, they swung into action to trace her.

Can’t hand over Lokayukta graft case to CBI: Siddaramaiah

Rejecting the demand by social activists to hand over the corruption case against some Lokayukta officers to CBI, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said government does not have powers to do so as the institution is an independent anti-corruption body.

“The government does not have any powers to hand over the matter to CBI since Lokayukta is an independent body,” he told reporters here.

Social activists had sought a CBI probe against some Lokayukta officials for alleged corruption.

AYUSH minister Sripad Naik’s maid found murdered in Goa

A 48-year-old domestic help working at the Goa home of AYUSH Minister Sripad Naik was allegedly murdered by an unidentified man, police said today.

Body of Charu Rathod was found near the private residence of Naik at Ribandar near here in the wee hours today, they said.

As per Old Goa police officials, Rathod, a widow, had been working at the minister’s residence since long.

She has been staying in Goa for last twenty years, they said.

Police suspect that she might have been killed while returning to her home last night.
