Justice not settlement needed for rape cases: Lawyers to Madras HC

Terming the recently delivered order of the Madras High Court that directed the rapist to mediate with the victim as “illegal” and “unwarranted”, legal eagles pitched for delivering justice instead of referring it for “settlement”.

Expressing that such verdict will increase rape cases in the country, legal experts said the high court had no power to overwrite expressed provisions of law and “rape survivors needs justice instead of sympathy”.

Rahul, Ravi Shankar in Kannada remake of ‘Jigarthanda’

Critically acclaimed Tamil musical gangster film “Jigarthanda” is being remade in Kannada featuring actors Rahul and Ravi Shankar in the lead roles. The yet-untitled remake is being helmed by actor-filmmaker Sudeep.

“Rahul will be reprising the role of Siddharth, while I’ll play Bobby Simha’s part in the remake. We’ve already started shooting,” Ravi Shankar, who plays the main antagonist, told IANS.

The remake also features Samyukta Hornad in the role originally played by Lakshmi Menon.

Mumbai is fifth ‘best value city’ globally: Report

Country’s financial capital Mumbai has been ranked as the fifth most budget-friendly city among 40 key tourists countries of the world, according to a survey.

Mumbai comes after Hanoi (Vietnam), Warsaw (Poland), Sharm el Sheikh (Egypt) and Bangkok (Thailand), 2015 TripIndex Cities, annual TripAdvisor cost comparison study showed.

The most expensive destination in the world is Cancun, Mexico, Zurich in Switzerland was ranked at the second spot, followed by New York City (USA), London (UK) and Punta Cana (Caribbean).

Two undertrials escape from Tihar: Congress asks Delhi Govt., Centre to take action

Expressing shock over reports of two undertrials lodged in Tihar Jail escaping through a tunnel they had dug under the perimeter wall, Congress leader Tom Vadakkan on Monday said the Delhi Government and the Centre must initiate action on this matter.

“It is shocking that prisoners dig a tunnel in the high security Tihar Jail in Delhi. The state government and the Centre must take action,” he said.

Two prisoners scaled one wall and dug a tunnel under another in the dead of night to escape from Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Thousands cheered on as the Dalai Lama received a cake on main stage at Glastonbury Festival to mark his 80th birthday.

It was Tibetan Buddhism’s head monk’s first appearance at the iconic music event, where he was addressing the massive audience in the Worthy Farm fields, but was surprised when suddenly the crowd burst into a rendition of “Happy Birthday” after punk rock singer Patti Smith initiation.

His birthday is due next week.

Fans of Wimbledon 2015 have set a new opening day queuing record by camping for almost 54 hours to buy tickets for the games.

All the tennis fans camped outside the Centre Court Wimbledon tickets, including a group of 60-year-old women who were there from around 7:30 in the morning on rainy day of June 27, whereas the sale had to start from 1 pm in the afternoon, the Mirror reported.

Management later forced almost 50 fans and the group of old women outside the Wimbledon Park and banned early queuing as it would have affected people’s health and safety.

Tihar Jail’s 3-tier security breached; two undertrials dig tunnel to escape

In a daring jailbreak, two undertrials dug a tunnel in the country’s most secure prison, Tihar jail, and managed to escape.

While one of the escaped convict was caught, the other one is still at large, as per news reports.

Housed in Jail no 7, the two convicts reportedly scaled the wall and then dug a tunnel linking to the boundary of the prison complex on Saturday night.

Their absence could be detected only on Sunday night after they failed to respond to their roll call.

An alert was immediately sounded and a search led the jail officials to the tunnel.

Rupee dives 24 paise against dollar in early trade

Extending losses for the fifth consecutive day, the rupee shed 24 paise to trade at 63.88 against the US dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange due to continued demand for the American currency from importers.

Forex dealers said besides sustained demand for the dollar in view of the approaching month-end, weakness in the euro against the American currency overseas amid growing concerns of a Greece debt default and a possible euro zone exit weighed.

Furthermore, a lower opening in domestic equities kept up pressure on the rupee, they said.

Director James Gunn has claimed Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will be more emotional than the first film.

In the sequel to the Marvel hit, the emphasises will be on some of the characters and the film will focus on fatherhood, reported Digital Spy.

“It’s both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters. We get to learn a lot more about fathers in the second movie, and we focus a lot on that,” he said.
