Kolkata college bans short skirts for girls, message on T-shirts

Authorities at the prestigious Scottish Church College here has prescribed a dress code for its students which include well below knee-length skirts for girls and a ban on any kind of earrings or facial studs for boys.

A notice put up on the college’s notice board has said that in order to maintain propriety and proper atmosphere in college campus, the dress code would have to be followed by the students.

Passenger alert: Hand baggage rule for Air India toughens

Come July and Air India, Air India Express passengers from the UAE will face stricter rules on carry-on baggage.

“The free allowance for hand luggage would be restricted to eight kg on Air India and seven kg on Air India Express, inclusive of duty free items,” Khaleej Times reported on Sunday.

According to a senior airline official, the free allowance for hand luggage will be strictly restricted to 8kg and 7kg respectively on these airlines inclusive of duty free items.

UGC NET 2015: Student held for cheating via WhatsApp

One student was today arrested for transmitting questions via Whatsapp during an UGC Net 2015 examination, police said.

Rimon Hassan of Natun Beliashampur of Bhagwabgola in Murshidabad district was caught allegedly while transmitting photographs of questions from the examination hall of a school in central Kolkata during third paper of the UGC Net, they said.

Principal Sraboni Samanta of Abhinav Bharati High School, which was the exam venue, lodged a complaint with the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station against Hassan, acting on which police arrested the youth, police added.

Daily bathing of paediatric patients with disposable clothes containing two percent chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) reduces bloodstream infections by 59 percent, a study shows.

The study was presented at the 42nd Annual Conference of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

“We took great care to ensure successful implementation of the new bathing regimen,” said Adam N. Karcz, infection preventionist at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis.

Protest in Bihar over lynching of school director

A day after the director of a private residential school in Bihar’s Nalanda district was beaten to death by villagers, hundreds of angry protestors on Monday blocked traffic and demanded action against those involved, police said.

The family of the lynched director demanded a CBI probe, and private schools in Nalanda remained close on Monday in protest against the incident.

UAE expat woman and child infected with MERS

Two United Arab Emirates (UAE) expatriates – a woman and an 11-year-old child – were found infected with the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, a media report said on Monday.

The victims, who live in the eastern region of Abu Dhabi, contracted the virus from a relative, who had the virus diagnosed last month, The National quoted the World Health Organisation (WHO) as saying.

Neither of them had been exposed to other risk factors in the 14 days before detection, the WHO said. They are being kept in isolation, where they have not shown any symptoms.

Hyderabad court rejects petition on governor

The Hyderabad High Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking orders to the central government to direct the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governor to implement section 8 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act.

The section vests special powers in the governor to monitor law and order in Hyderabad, the joint capital of the two states.

The court, while dismissing the petition filed by the Andhra Association of Telangana, observed that it cannot issue the orders as the act does not say that the governor will implement section 8 at New Delhi’s direction.

Too much male sexual attention harms attractive females, according to a study on fruit flies.

The study showed that male harassment of females hampered the species’ ability to adapt to new environmental conditions.

“We found that sexually attractive females were overwhelmed by male suitors. Female fruit flies with superior genes that allow them to lay more eggs were so attractive to male suitors they spent most of the time fending off male suitors rather than actually laying eggs,” said Steve Chenoweth from Queensland University, Australia.

Sensex plunges as Greece debt crisis casts its shadow on world markets

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensex plunged over 600 points in the trade today as fears intensified over Greece likely to default on its debt repayment.

This triggered concerns about foreign selling in the emerging markets.

The Sensex, which opened 450 points, was soon trading 600 points down, while the 50-share Nifty index fell below 8,200 levels.

As per reports, the Sensex was at 11 a.m. down nearly 571 points to 27,240, while the Nifty fell to 8,205.

11 Afghan soldiers killed

At least 11 soldiers were killed after Taliban militants ambushed a military convoy in Afghanistan’s Herat province, the media reported on Monday.

The incident took place Sunday night in Masjid-e-Chobi area of Kurkh district, Tolo News reported.

The convoy was travelling from Herat city to the neighbouring Badghis province. The insurgents also seized the weapons of the dead soldiers.

Three killed in US plane crash

Three people were killed when a plane crashed into a house in Massachusetts state, US, the media reported on Monday.

The plane carrying three passengers crashed into a home in Plainville town on Sunday, setting the house on fire, reported CNN.

“The house immediately caught fire after the crash. The four occupants got out of the building before it became fully engulfed in flames,” state police said.

The victims have not been identified yet.

The aircraft departed from Lancaster airport in Pennsylvania and was headed to Norwood Memorial Airport, around 30 km from the crash site.

Rhino killed in Assam’s Kaziranga park

Poachers have killed yet another world famous one-horned rhino in Assam’s Kaziranga national park, taking the number to 12 since January this year, officials said on Monday.

Park officials said the guards patrolling the park recovered the carcass of a rhino from the Burhapahar range of the forest on Monday.

“It bore bullet injury and the horn was missing, which indicated it to be a case of poaching,” park director M.K. Yadav told IANS.

Tihar jail conducts probe as two escape

Tihar jail authorities have initiated a probe after two prisoners escaped, an official said on Monday.

“We have initiated a detailed inquiry under the guidance of superintendent of jail number 3 M.K. Dwivedi,” Tihar Jail Deputy Inspector General Mukesh Prasad told IANS.

Faizan, 19, and Javed alias Rinku, 18, escaped from jail number seven at Tihar on June 27. Faizan was caught while Javed is still on the run.

Prasad said that the two were found missing during the evening roll call.

HC notice on plea to restrain ACB chief

The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notice to the central government on a plea seeking to restrain Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) chief Mukesh Kumar Meena from interfering in the activities of the anti-corruption department.

But Justice V.P. Vaish refused to pass an interim order on the Delhi government’s plea seeking to restrain Meena from entering the premises of the ACB.

The court sought a response from the central government by August 11 and asked Meena to “act in accordance with law”.

Pak journalist shot dead in Balochistan

PA young Pakistani journalist was shot dead at his residence in Usta Mohammad district of Balochistan on Sunday morning.

According to the Express Tribune, 35-year-old Zafarullah Jattak was affiliated with a Quetta-based newspaper.

Jattak was sleeping when the attack occurred. The deceased was working as tehsil reporter for Daily Intikhab.

DSP Khawand Bukhsh said that armed men barged into his home and opened fire. Jattak died on the spot while his killers escaped unchallenged, he added.

Young woman steers Chennai’s first Metro train

Steered by a young woman, the first train of the Chennai Metro Rail chugged off from Alandur Station here today after being flagged off by chief minister J Jayalalithaa.

The first train which left at 12.15 PM from Alandur to Koyambedu was driven by A Preethi, a 28 year old diploma holder in engineering from Government Dharmambal Polytechnic College here.

The Chief Minister inaugurated it by flagging it off via live video from the State Secretariat here.

“I am excited, my daughter’s dream of becoming a loco pilot of Metro Rail has come true,” Preethi’s father R Anbu told PTI.

Greece crisis may trigger outflows from India

The economic crisis in Greece may trigger capital outflows from India and the government is consulting the RBI to deal with the situation, Finance Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi said.

Stating that the Greece situation has no direct impact on India, he said there may be some indirect effect via Europe on capital inflows and outflows here.

“Greece criss does not have any effect directly on India. (But) interest rate may firm up in Europe. In case of firming up of interest rate in Europe, there can be outflow of capital from India,” Mehrishi told reporters here.

IPL spot fixing case: Charges against Sreesanth and others to be framed on July 25

A Delhi court on Monday deferred the framing of charges against cricketers Ajit Chandila, S. Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan and others, including underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel, to July 25.

Additional Sessions Judge Neena Bansal Krishna, who was scheduled to pass the order today, said that the order sheet is not yet prepared.

The two inmates who managed the daring escape were identified as Faizan and Javed both of whom were lodged in jail for burglaries.

In a major security breach at Tihar Jail, two undertrials scaled the wall of the ward they were lodged in and then dug a tunnel through the boundary wall to escape from one of the most high-security prisons in the country.

While one of them was later caught, the other one is still on the run and a mega manhunt has been launched to nab him.
