Man was forced to drink urine, alleges police brutality

A sensational revelation from the prosecution witness in a case involving three bombings in Mumbai in 2002 in Mumbai’s Pota Court exposed police brutality.

The witness has accused police of forcing him to drink each other’s urine and also have “sex with a stray dog” when he was in custody 12 years ago.

In a statement submitted to a special court, the witness unveiled the heinous deeds and said: “I was made to drink gutter water and urine…It is correct that I was asked to drink urine of another accused and my urine (was given) to him.”

MH17 crash: Search team closes operation to recover human remains, plane wreckage

The recovery of human remains and wreckage from the Malaysian Airlines MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine has reportedly been wrapped up as a final flight carrying seven coffins landed in the Netherlands.

Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, head of the Dutch-led rescue operation, said that they had done “everything humanly possible” to recover human remains and plane debris from the site, reported the BBC.

He said that many more body parts had been discovered and the team hoped that it would help them in identifying the final two victims.

‘Quasars’ dining on more cosmic matter than first thought at excessive rates

A new study using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has suggested that a group of unusual giant black holes may be consuming excessive amounts of matter.

Astronomers have known for some time that supermassive black holes can gobble up huge quantities of gas and dust that have fallen into their gravitational pull. As the matter falls towards these black holes, it glows with such brilliance that they can be seen billions of light years away. Astronomers call these extremely ravenous black holes “quasars.”

MTNL introduces unlimited free local calling at night

State-run telecom operator MTNL today said it is introducing unlimited free local calling at night for its landline and broadband customers to any network, effective from today.

“MTNL has decided to introduce unlimited free local calling for its landline and broadband customers (Combo) between 2200 HRS to 0700 HRS to any network. The free unlimited calling facility is also available for Delhi MTNL landline customers to any network to Mumbai and vice versa during the same hours,” it said in a statement.

Foreign Secretary, NSA arrive in Kathmandu as India intensifies relief efforts

The duo will assess the rescue and relief efforts launched under ‘Operation Maitri’ to aid Nepal.

Strong earthquake overdue in India, but not any time soon

Menuka, 19, and her cousin Vikey were enjoying a television show just before Saturday noon at their home in Patan area here when the earth shook violently.

When they realised to their horror that it was a major earthquake, both dashed under a bed. The quick thinking saved their life.

In no time, the four-storey house collapsed like a pack of cards, bringing down tonnes of cement, bricks, wood and beams.

US body slams Modi government over religious intolerance, India fumes

India today strongly reacted to a report by a US Congress-established panel claiming that minorities in the country have been subjected to “violent attacks” and “forced conversions” after the Modi government assumed power in 2014, saying it does not take cognisance of such reports.

Scientists have identified chemical markers in urine associated with body mass that can help predict which people could be at risk of developing obesity and metabolic diseases.

The new study, led by Imperial College London, shows that obesity has a ‘metabolic signature’ detectable in urine samples, pointing to processes that could be targeted to mitigate its effects on health.

Urine contains a variety of chemicals known as metabolites, from a vast range of biochemical processes in the body.

Human like brain process found in bats too: Study

Just like humans, bats also use the left and right sides of their brains to process different aspects of sounds, a new study has found.

Aside from humans, no other animal that has been studied, not even monkeys or apes, has proved to use such hemispheric specialisation for sound processing – meaning that the left brain is better at processing fast sounds, and the right processing slow ones.

The study opens a pathway to studying bat brains in order to understand certain human language disorders and potentially even improving computer speech recognition, researchers said.

Nearly five days after the quake shook the Himalayan nation, international aid workers are still stuck in Kathmandu, even as urgent help is required in remote villages yet to be reached.

Saturday’s quake killed more nearly 6,00 people, and injured at least 11,000. The UN says more than eight million people have been affected by the quake.
