A team of researchers has moved invisibility cloaks into the real-life classroom.

Real-life invisibility cloaks do exist, in a manner of speaking: researchers have engineered systems that bend light around an object, shielding it from detection. But most are very tiny and only work at very small wavelength ranges, rendering them less impressive to the average observer.

5.4 magnitude earthquake hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands, no casualties reported

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit off Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday, within a week of the high intensity quake that hit Nepal and adjoining areas including parts of India.

The moderate intensity earthquake jolted the Andaman islands at 2:29 pm, said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The epicentre of the quake lies 135 kilometres away from Port Blair.

The depth of the earthquake was measured as 10 km, IMD said in a statement.

Reports of damage to properties or life have not been received so far, it said.

Man arrested for raping minor sister-in-law

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped and impregnated by her brother-in-law at Dante Kalimpong in this district. The accused has been arrested, police said on Friday.

Arun Rai (30), to whom the parents of the girl had sent their daughter and younger son for better schooling last year, had raped her and she gave birth to a child recently, police officials said.

The mother of the victim from Sikkim Namchi area filed a complaint against Rai following which police arrested him and today.

UN is warned of ‘active Iranian nuclear procurement network’

Britain has told a UN panel of experts that it is aware of an “active Iranian nuclear procurement network” linked to two Iranian companies.

Two UN sources confirm that Britain’s warning on April 20 is included in a confidential report by the panel. The sources spoke on anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss it.

The warning names two companies, Iran’s Centrifuge Technology Company and Kalay Electric Company, but it gives no details.

The report comes as world powers negotiate with Iran on a possible comprehensive agreement on its nuclear program by June 30.

Israel blames Arab neighbors for stalling on nuke-free zone

Israel is blaming its Arab neighbors for the failure of progress toward achieving a Middle East free of nuclear weapons, saying that “if a serious regional effort has not emerged in the Middle East during the last five years, it is not because of Israel.”

Israel’s statement, distributed today to a global conference on a landmark disarmament treaty, is the country’s first public comment since it showed up as a surprise observer. Israel has never publicly declared its nuclear weapons, and it is not a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has thanked his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi for helping Israel in its rescue work in quake-hit Nepal.

Netanyahu in a telephonic conversation yesterday thanked the Indian PM for providing helicopters to assist with the rescue of Israelis (from Nepal) and permitting Israeli relief planes to land in India, an official statement said.

Netanyahu also conveyed his condolences to the families of the Indian victims who lost their lives and were injured in the earthquake, it said.

Quake occurs in Papua New Guinea, local tsunami possible

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake has been recorded in Papua New Guinea, and a local tsunami is possible.

The US Geological Survey says the quake this evening was centered in the province of East New Britain, about 110 kilometres from the provincial capital, Kokopo.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometres of the epicenter. It also said the epicenter was 61 kilometres deep. Shallower quakes typically have more damage potential.

US Navy to accompany American commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz

Days after an American cargo ship was intercepted by Iranian patrol boats in the Strait of Hormuz, Pentagon officials have said that the U.S. Navy will accompany all U.S.-flagged commercial vessels through those waters in the future to prevent interference by Iran.

The U.S. Navy will only accompany the commercial vessels and monitor the area as they cross the strait.

The BBC had earlier reported that Iranian naval ships had fired warning shots near a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship before seizing it and its crew on Friday.

Internet flashes images of alleged IS training camp in Afghanistan

New images purporting to show an Islamic State (IS) training camp in Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border, have surfaced on the internet, indicating that the Middle east-based terror group is making inroads into South Asia.

According to Fox News, the pictures were obtained by a Pakistani journalist earlier this month and published by the military blog, ‘The Long War Journal.’

Pakistani journalist Saleem Mehsud had originally posted the photos on his Twitter page on April 18, but could not divulge details about their origin.

A cost-estimating website has highlighted cost obsessions in Pakistan and India with their fascinating maps using Google’s autocomplete feature.

The website known as Fixr.com showed that weddings costs is the most Googled item in Pakistan, whereas, cows topped the search in India, the Express Tribune reported.

The maps shows the most- Googled for object in each country, using the autocomplete formula of “How much does * cost in [x country]”.

Tibetan Prime Minister in-exile Lobsang Sangay has inaugurated a renovated Tibet Museum in a popular Buddhist temple of Dharamsala.

Eleven die in road accident in Jalpaiguri District

At least 11 people lost their lives when a van carrying a marriage party collided with a truck West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Friday.

The accident took place when the marriage party was returning from the wedding.

While seven people died on the spot, the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

“On the spot seven people were dead and here in the hospital four of them had already died. Three were, perhaps, not brought here. So, there are total eleven who have died,” said Doctor Arindam Adhikari.

The injured included women and children.
