An airstrike on a three-story home last summer killed the wife and two children of Mohammed Deif, but the fate of the elusive Deif, who has survived several Israeli assassination attempts, was not known.

The Israeli officials say they believe Deif was in the building shortly before the airstrike. They say it is not clear whether he was there at the time of the attack, but now believe he is alive.

7.1-magnitude quake hits Papua New Guinea

A 7.1-magnitude quake jolted Papua New Guinea on Friday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicentre at a depth of 61 km was initially determined to be at 5.2 degrees south latitude and 151.7 degrees east longitude, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre hasn’t issued any warning yet.

There has been no report of casualties or property loss so far.

Delhi High Court today told DMRC that not having dustbins on metro platforms due to fear of bomb blasts was a “very myopic view of security”, as airports and even railway stations have garbage bins.

The court, which directed Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to “examine viability of having spittoons and dustbins on the stations”, also queried it on whether drinking water and toilet facilities were easily available to commuters.

Suspended Haryana IAS officer Sanjiv Kumar arrested for allegedly planning friend’s murder

Suspended Haryana cadre IAS officer Sanjiv Kumar has been arrested by the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch for allegedly conspiring to murder a Delhi-based businessman.

Kumar, a 1985 batch officer, along with former Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, his MLA son, Ajay Chautala and 53 others was earlier convicted by a Delhi court for illegally recruiting 3,206 junior teachers and was out on parole.

He was arrested along with alleged gangsters Shoukat Pasha and two shooters Taufiq and Manna, police said.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued show cause notice to advocate M L Sharma for making “irresponsible” and “scandalous” allegations in his PIL challenging the new law on appointment of judges for higher judiciary, saying “this is not a political platform”.

A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice J S Khehar directed Sharma to respond within a week why he should not be “debarred” from canvasing any public interest litigation(PIL).

National Green Tribunal puts 10-year-old diesel vehicles plying ban on hold till May 18

The National Green Tribunal today extended till May 18 a stay on its order banning plying of diesel vehicles which are over 10 years old in Delhi-NCR, bringing relief to public utility services and private owners.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar extended the stay after Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, appearing for Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, requested the Tribunal to grant more time to file Centre’s suggestion on methods to reduce vehicular pollution.

Moga incident: Family of victim refuses to cremate teenage girl

The family of the teenage girl, who was killed after being molested and thrown off a moving bus belonging to the ruling Badal family in Punjab, has refused to cremate her till the administration fulfils their demands for compensation and cancellation of the transport firm’s permit.
