52 civilians dead in coalition strikes in Syria: monitor

US-led air strikes targeting the Islamic State group killed at least 52 civilians in a village in northern Syria, a monitoring group said today.

“Air strikes by the coalition early on Friday on the village of Birmahle in Aleppo province killed 52 civilians,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

“Seven children were killed, and 13 people are still trapped in the rubble.

Mobile app Foodpanda raises $100 million from investors led by Goldman Sachs

Mobile food delivery app Foodpanda on Friday announced raising of fresh funds to the tune of US $100 million (about Rs 635 crore) in a financing round led by Goldman Sachs. Existing investors, including Rocket Internet SE, also participated in the round.

The company will use the funds to expand its operations and strengthen last mile delivery, especially in emerging markets like India.

Apple confirms Watch may not work well on tattooed wrists

Apple has confirmed that permanent or temporary changes to the skin like tattoos can lead to inaccurate readings in Apple Watch.

According to the Verge, Apple said that the tattoo ink, pattern and saturation can block light from the sensor, making it difficult to get reliable readings.

However, Apple did not suggest what type of tattoos will pose a problem and which ones will not.

Apple suggested that darker tattoos cause major issues that prevent the Watch’s light from getting through.

As per a new survey, now just 9 percent of Germans consider the end of the Second World War as a defeat for their country, as compared to 34 percent a decade ago.

Most Germans, who no longer recognise they lost the war, claim that they were merely “victims” of Adolf Hitler and regard it as a victory because they were liberated from Nazi rule, the Daily Star reported.

12 militants killed in Pakistan airstrikes

At least 12 militants were killed and eight others were injured on Saturday in airstrikes conducted by military jets in Pakistan’s Khyber Agency.

According to security sources, military jets and helicopters targeted militant hideouts in Tirah Valley’s Kokikhel area, Dawn online reported.

The airstrikes came amid the ongoing “Khyber-2” operation launched by the army in the tribal region and are part of the military’s stepped-up efforts since a militant attack at Peshawar’s Army Public School in December 2014 killed over 140 students and staff.

Nearly 1,250 dead in Yemen fighting: WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that nearly 1,250 people have died in just over a month of fighting in Yemen.

According to News24.com, the Yemen conflict has affected 7.5 million people, said the WHO.

The UN health agency the humanitarian situation in the country as deteriorating especially in Taez where there has been heavy violence.

According to the latest WHO toll, Saudi-led coalition airstrikes killed 1,244 and left 5,044 injured between March 19 and April 27.

20 mn students affected by teachers’ strike in Bihar

Nearly 20 million students in Bihar’s government-run schools have been affected due to an indefinite teachers’ strike in support of over 3.5 lakh contractual teachers, officials said here on Saturday.

The teachers’ strike has badly hit class 1 to 12 students.

The contractual teachers of around 72,000 primary and middle schools went on strike last month demanding pay at par with regular teachers and better working conditions in schools.

Thousands of high school teachers have also gone on strike to support these contractual teachers.

Pakistan stops channels from airing hate speeches

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulator Authority (Pemra) has stopped broadcast media from airing hate speeches or any any similiar material that may harm national interest, media reported on Saturday.

Earlier, Pemra had issued notices to 14 TV channels for airing Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain’s speech and noted this was against the integrity of the country and its institutions, Geo News reported.

Teenagers who mix alcohol with energy drinks are four times more likely to face a drinking problem disorder than those who have tried alcohol but never mixed it with an energy drink, a new study says.

“Abusive alcohol use among adolescents is a dangerous behaviour that can lead to injury, chronic alcohol use and abuse, and even death,” said first author Jennifer Emond from Norris Cotton Cancer Centre at Dartmouth School of Medicine.

“The mixed use of alcohol and energy drinks may signal the development of abusive drinking behaviours among adolescents,” Edmond pointed out.
