Owaisi now eyes Uttar Pradesh

With its electoral curve showing an upward trend in Maharashtra, AIMIM is now focusing on Uttar Pradesh in an apparent move to make inroads into the support base of Samajwadi Party and BSP.

“We are going to contest assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh,” All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, adding that he was working to strengthen his party in the state at a time when the ruling Samajwadi Party has “failed to fulfil” promises to the people.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled in early 2017.

Republic of Congo bans full face-veils to prevent violent extremism

The president of the Republic of Congo’s Islamic High Council has announced that full face-veils will be banned to prevent violent extremism in the country.

According to the Independent, Muslims form the minority in the Republic of Congo, in central Africa, bordered by Gabon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda.

The Islamic council leader said that around 80,000 Muslims were reacting positively to the news in the country.

Brooklyn Decker is pregnant

Model-actress Brooklyn Decker is expecting her first child with husband and former tennis star Andy Roddick.

Decker, who married Roddick in April 2009, announced the pregnancy news on Instagram on Saturday, reports eonline.com.

“So this happened… #the3ofus,” Decker wrote while debuting her baby bump in a black dress.

Her representative also confirmed the news adding: “I’m happy to confirm Brooklyn and Andy are expecting a new addition to their family in the autumn of this year.”

Sri Lankan nabbed for trying to smuggle over Rs. 6 million worth of foreign currency

Customs officials here have arrested a Sri Lankan national from the departure lounge of Colombo International Airport in Katunayake for attempting to smuggle out foreign currency worth over Rs. 6 million.

The Customs officials said the arrested smuggler was 39-years-old and had arrived at the airport on Saturday morning to board a flight to Dubai via Qatar. He was to fly by Qatar Airways flight QR 669, they added.

The estimated value of currency seized is Rs. 6,362,746, and was hidden in his traveling bag, the Colombo page web site quoted the officials, as saying.

Newly discovered pulsar has ‘widest-ever’ orbit

A team of highly determined high school students has detected pulsar with widest orbit ever.

The team discovered a never-before-seen pulsar by painstakingly analyzing data from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Further observations by astronomers using the GBT revealed that this pulsar has the widest orbit of any around a neutron star and is part of only a handful of double neutron star systems.

Nepal faces water shortage due to damaged pipelines

Due to water pipelines being badly damaged by the earthquake in Nepal, residents in Kathmandu are facing an extreme shortage of water with waters tankers being their only hope.

Rubble in many places has restricted the movement of water tankers in many places.

Lorries are able to carry water tankers only to areas which have not been cut off.

A relief worker, Ali, said that people come running at the sight of water tankers and a tank which takes hours to fill up is soon emptied.

Shot by colleague, Mumbai policeman dies

A Mumbai police inspector who was shot and critically injured by his junior colleague on Saturday night, died from his bullet injuries here on Sunday, an official said.

Vilas Joshi (53), a senior inspector at Vakola police station in Santacruz East suburb of Mumbai, was fired upon by Assistant Sub-Inspector Dilip Shirke (55) with his service revolver, following a brawl over absenteeism.

The last rites of Joshi shall be performed in the afternoon in a south Mumbai crematorium.

Joshi suffered three bullet injuries in the back and abdomen.

Nepal envoy thanks India for its relief efforts

Nepal’s Ambassador to India Deep Kumar Upadhyay on Sunday thanked India for its relief efforts after a massive earthquake shook the country last week.

“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to India for their support; it’s wonderful. It is incredible and natural that every Indian is standing to support Nepal. We are very thankful,” said Upadhyay.

Earlier in the day, Upadhyay had said that the crisis highlighted the ‘heart-to-heart’ relationship between people across the two borders.

Seven policemen abducted in Pakistan

Seven policemen were abducted on Sunday following an attack on a checkpost by a group of armed bandits in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

The abduction took place in Rahim Yar Khan district, ARY News reported.

According to sources, at least 30 bandits attacked the police checkpost in an area near the Sindh and Punjab province border.

Road between Jammu and Kashmir Valley to open

The Mughal Road, which connects Jammu region with the Kashmir Valley, will open for one-way traffic on Sunday after being closed for over five months, an official said.

“Traffic will be allowed from Jammu to Srinagar,” the official told IANS.

Connecting the Jammu region with the valley through Poonch, Rajouri and Shopian districts, the road was originally built by Mughal emperors.

For centuries the road remained closed. It was rebuilt in 2005 as a link road between the landlocked valley and rest of India. During winter, heavy snowfall forces its closure.

10 coaches of Duronto derailed in Goa

Ten rear coaches of a Duronto Express, going from Mumbai to Ernakulam, derailed in a tunnel near Balli railway station in Goa on Sunday morning, a railway official said. No casualties were reported.

The accident occurred around 7.15 a.m., about 45 km south of Panaji, as the 12223 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Ernakulam Duronto Express was passing through a tunnel.

No casualties have been reported yet. A medical van and relief trains have just reached the site, said Konkan Railway’s (KR) public relations officer Baban Ghatge.

Firms garner Rs 2 lakh cr in illicit funds; watchdogs up vigil

As many as 500 cases have come under the scanner of revenue intelligence agencies and capital markets regulator Sebi for raising a whopping Rs 2 lakh crore illegally in the guise of non-convertible debentures and private placements.

Suspecting that these financial instruments are being misused to launder black money, the revenue intelligence agencies have shared the details with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and other regulators for further action, official sources said.

Policeman found stealing diesel from escort vehicle in VIP security

In a shocking incident, a Bihar policeman was found stealing diesel from an escort vehicle that is employed in VIP security in Patna.

The broad day light theft of diesel has blasted the police excuse that they have scarcity of fuel to reach any crime spot.

The jeep was stationary near Gandhi Maidan police station when the theft was committed by the policeman.

Recently, Bihar police have bought many new vehicles to provide security to VIPs.

So far there has been no report of any action against the guilty cop seen in the video.

US-based Ford Foundation has funded a political party and profit making organisations “illegally” which has resulted in the foreign outfit coming under the Home Ministry scanner and put on the “watch list”.

A senior Home Ministry official said an investigation has found that funds sanctioned by the Ford Foundation to an NGO have reached a political party which automatically makes the donor liable to face action. But the Ford Foundation has rejected the charge.
