Blatter hits back at ‘hate’ campaign, including Michel Platini

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Saturday he was “shocked” at the way the US judiciary has targeted football’s world body and slammed what he called a “hate” campaign by Europe’s football leaders.

Blatter said he suspected the arrest of seven FIFA officials this week under a US anti-corruption warrant was an attempt to “interfere with the congress” at which he was elected to a fifth term as FIFA president Friday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday paid tribute to noted film director Rituparno Ghosh on his second death anniversary .

The West Bengal Chief Minister took to twitter to share her thoughts.

“On this day two years ago, we lost Rituparno Ghosh. His passing away was a huge loss for Bengal. He is our pride. We miss you Ritu,” she tweeted.

Ghosh passed away on May 30, 2013 in Kolkata after suffering a heart attack.

Some of his critically acclaimed works are Unishe April, Chokher Bali, Raincoat, The Last Lear, Bariwali. (ANI)

CCEA approves development of Shendra Bidkin Industrial Area in DMIC

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday approved the construction of trunk infrastructure components and landscaping for Phase-1 of the Shendra Bidkin Industrial Area (SBIA) in Maharashtra’s Shendra region.

The total cost of the project, spreading across 8.39 square kilometres in Maharashtra in the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), is estimated to be approximately Rs. 1533.45 crore, which will be

invested by the DMIC Trust as equity in the city/node SPV, viz, Aurangabad Industrial Township Limited (AITL).

Dustin Diamond, who is better known for his role as Samuel Screech from ‘ Saved by the Bell’, has been convicted of two misdemeanors in stabbing case from a barroom fight.

A 35-year-old man moving suspiciously in the border belt of Jammu was arrested by the Army, an official said on Saturday.

Troops of Tiger division arrested Zakir Ahmed of Vellore in Tamil Nadu, who was moving suspiciously in Marh area of Jammu late last night, PRO (Defence), Lt Col Manish Mehta said. The suspect was later handed over to the police for further questioning.

Antony dubs govt. delay on OROP as ‘criminal inaction’

Taking exception to the ‘announcement’ of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government, former defence minister A.K. Antony on Saturday said the delay of 14 months in the implementation of this scheme was ‘criminal inaction’ on the Centre’s part.

“The statement by the PM is totally incorrect. They have no answer on this 14 months of inaction. There is now no question of “announcing” OROP because that has already been done by us,” Antony told ANI here.

“The delay of 14 months is criminal inaction on part of the government,” he added.

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi for ‘jumping into war without preparation’

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday accused Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi of directing his party’s youth wing, the NSUI, to stage a protest outside Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani’s residence.

5.6 magnitude earthquake shakes Ecuador

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook parts of Ecuador early Saturday, though there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Ecuador`s Geophysical Institute said the quake occurred at 01:26 am (0626 GMT) at a depth of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) off the Ecuadorian coast.

The quake was felt in the capital Quito and the coastal city Esmeraldas near Colombia.

More than 3,300 migrants rescued in Med, 17 dead: coastguard

The Italian coastguard said it had coordinated the rescue of more than 3,300 migrants sailing across the Mediterranean Sea, but also found 17 corpses on several of the rickety boats.

Distress calls were made from 17 boats, and several other rescue operations were still underway late yesterday.

The 17 bodies were found on three inflatable dinghies, from which more than 300 other migrants were rescued alive, the Italian navy said on Twitter.

The navy’s press office, contacted by AFP, was not immediately able to say how the migrants died.
