Massive earthquake strikes Japan

A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on the Richter scale took place off the Japanese coast on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey stated.

The epicentre of the quake has been detected as 189 kilometres WNW off Chichi-shima.

According to reports, no tsunami warnings have been issued as of now.

Sharif expresses concern over Indian minister’s statement

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday expressed serious concern over recent statements made by the Indian political leadership, and said that all possible measures will be taken to counter “anti-Pakistan” acts.

Sharif and Pakistani Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif visited the headquarters of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and met its Director General, Maj. Rizwan Akhtar, who briefed them on the internal and external security situation of the country.

Saudi-led coalition warplanes intensified airstrikes against Yemen’s Shia Houthi group in the capital Sanaa on Saturday.

The coalition forces made more than 20 sorties against Houthi targets at the Sanaa International Airport, adjacent al-Dailamy Airport, the headquarters of the air force base and the ammunition depots, security sources said.

Shanbaug rape accused was living a ‘normal’ life in a UP village

The rape accused in the nurse Aruna Shanbaug case, Sohan Lal Bharti Valmiki, has been living in a Uttar Pradesh village for the last 35 years, local meda reports suggest.

He has been in the Parpa village of Hapur distict with his in-laws since being released from a Mumbai prison after serving a seven-year sentence for raping nurse Shanbaug, who died recently in a Mumbai hospital after being comatose for 42 long years.

Locals say they were not aware of the antescedents of Sohan Lal, now serving as a sweeper at NTPC power plant in Dadri.

Heatwave toll crosses 500 mark in Telangana

Fifty-two more people have died due to heatwave conditions in Telangana in last 24 hours, taking the toll to 541 in the state, a senior official said here today.

“As per information available till 5 PM today, the toll has risen to 541 (from yesterday’s 489),” said a senior official of the state disaster management department.

Since April 15, Nalgonda district has recorded maximum number of 139 deaths, followed by Karimnagar (120), Khammam (95) and Mahabubnagar (42).

Centre will seek details of Uttarakhand flood scam: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday said that the Centre would initiate an inquiry into the Uttrakhand flood scam after getting all details.

“We shall find out details and then investigation shall be thought about,” Prasad said while addressing a press conference. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand’s Information Commissioner Anil Kumar Sharma said that the scam looks serious and added that a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry has been recommended to Chief Minister Harish Rawat.

AR Rahman documentary ‘Jai Ho’ screened at White House

“Jai Ho”, a documentary based on music maestro AR Rahman’s life, was screened at the White House.

The film, directed by Umesh Aggarwal, traces the journey of the Oscar and Grammy winning music composer’s professional and personal life. It explores the evolution of his style of music-a fusion of Eastern sensibilities and Western technology.

“On the way to the White House for a screening of ‘Jai Ho’,” Rahman, 48, posted on twitter.

The musician also performed at a concert in Wolftrap, a performing arts center located in Vienna, near Washington.

Punjab Police on Saturday clarified that British hotelier of Indian origin Ranjit Singh Power has been murdered, but his body was yet to be recovered, rejecting initial reports that a body found in a Punjab forest was of the NRI.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajinder Singh told reporters that the victim’s friend and business partner, Baldev Singh Deol, and his partner’s driver strangled Power at Anandpur Sahib in Ropar district, some 80 km from here.

Riot-hit Muslim villagers in Ballabhgarh’s Atali Village in Haryana have demanded “strong action” against Station House Officer (SHO) Babu Lal for “abetting the miscreants” belonging to the majority community who attacked them on May 25.

T Lawyers file police complaint against Chandrababu

The Telangana Lawyers’ Joint Action Committee here on Saturday lodged a criminal complaint with the Jubilee Hills Police Station seeking action against TDP president and AP Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu for comparing the elected representatives to sheep.

No respite from heat wave in Maharashtra

There was no relief from the heat wave sweeping parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra with high temperatures continuing on Saturday.

Chandrapur burnt at a high of 48 degrees Celsius — the highest temperature recorded in the state so far — and two points higher than Friday’s 46 degrees — though there were no officially recorded heat wave casualties in the state so far.

Nagpur followed with 47 degrees Celsius while Wardha stood at 46 degrees, and Akola remained constant like Friday at 45 degrees.

A brain protein believed to be a key component in the progress of dementia can cause memory loss in healthy brains even before physical signs of degeneration appear, says a new University of Sussex study.

The study reveals a direct link between the main culprit of Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by the formation of amyloid plaques in the brain tissue.

These amyloid plaques are made up of an insoluble protein, ‘Amyloid-beta’ (Abeta), which forms small structures called ‘oligomers’ that are important in the disease progression.
