Fuming over government’s attitude towards Alair encounter, Muslim religious leaders once again decided to meet Chief Minister and make representation under the banner of United Muslim Forum. Earlier the Joint Action Committee had demanded probe by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a sitting judge of High Court into the Alair encounter.

An important meeting of religious organisations included in Muslim United Forum was held at the office of All India Majlis-e Tameer-e-Millat, Madina Mansion, Narayanguda under the chairmanship of Maulana Mohammed Abdur Raheem Quraishi.

Over 100 aftershocks since Saturday strike fear in Nepal

Over 100 aftershocks have jolted Nepal since Saturday, prompting thousands to flee Kathmandu and forcing many to live outdoors.

A total of 110 aftershocks measuring above 4 on the Richter scale have shaken the country till Thursday morning. Nepal was devastated by a massive earthquake on Saturday, killing over 5,000 people.

People are now leaving Kathmandu everyday and thousands of people are living in open spaces fearing another quake.

Air pollution and poverty lower child’s IQ

Material hardship can increase the adverse affects of physical “stressors” like air pollutants as researchers have found that the toxic combination of air pollution and poverty could lower the intelligence quotient (IQ) of your kid.

The findings showed that children born to mothers experiencing economic hardship, who were also exposed during pregnancy to high levels of PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), scored significantly lower on IQ tests at age 5 compared with children born to mothers with greater economic security and less exposure to the pollutants.

NASA telescope captures ‘screams’ from zombie stars

Peering into the heart of the Milky Way galaxy, NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) has spotted a mysterious glow of high-energy X-rays.

These could be the “howls” of dead stars as they feed on stellar companions.

“We can see a completely new component of the centre of our galaxy with NuSTAR’s images,” said Kerstin Perez from the Columbia University in New York.

The centre of our Milky Way galaxy is bustling with young and old stars, smaller black holes and other varieties of stellar corpses — all swarming around a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A.

Girl dies after jumping off bus to avoid molesters

A 13-year-old girl died and her mother was seriously injured when they had to jump out of a moving private bus to avoid molestation by some youth along with the bus conductor near Punjab’s Moga town, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening.

The girl was declared brought dead by doctors. The mother was admitted to a government hospital in Moga.

The bus was impounded.

“We are investigating the matter and trying to nab the accused. The bus has been impounded,” a police officer told media on Wednesday night.

Miss Piggy to get feminist award

“The Muppet” star Miss Piggy is all set to receive an award for being one of the world’s most famous feminist by a prestigious New York museum.

Miss Piggy is being honoured with the 2015 Sackler Centre First Award for her four-decade long career on June 4 and will appear in conversation with activist and author Gloria Steinem. Kermit the Frog is also expected to attend, reported New York Post.

Passenger from Kuala Lumpur arrested for using bogus passport

A passenger from Kuala Lumpur was arrested by Air Intelligence officials here today for possessing a bogus passport, police said.

Prabakaran (30), hailing from Nagapattinam, had gone to Malaysia using bogus passport to obtain a job there, they said.

When he landed here this morning, he was questioned by the officials, who grew suspicious of his answers.

On checking his passport details, it was found that the name and address were fake, they said.

Collection agent looted at gunpoint in Ghaziabad

A collection agent working for a Noida-based telecom company was allegedly robbed of Rs 2 lakh at gunpoint by two motorcycle-borne miscreants today, police said.

The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm when the victim, Pramod Kumar, had come to Maharajpur area here for collection of money, police said.

According to the victim, two motorcycle-borne youths hit his vehicle from behind and snatched his shoulder-bag containing cash worth Rs 1.5 lakh and recharge coupons worth Rs 50,000 on gunpoint, police said.

The prosecution in the Little India Riot case has charged the accused Indian national of lying about being blocked by police from getting into his rented room in Little India, the area where the riot occurred in December 8, 2013.

Arun Kaliamurthy, 29, took the stand yesterday on the third day of his trial for failing to disperse on the night of the riot even after being lawfully commanded to do so by the police, reported The Straits Times.

Swastika case: GWU urged to revoke Jewish student’s suspension

A prominent student rights’ group, along with the student’s attorneys and the Hindu American Foundation, urged the George Washington University to revoke suspension of the Jewish student for placing a souvenir Hindu swastika obtained on a trip to India on his residence hall’s bulletin board.

“GWU may not ignore thousands of years of history and effectively forbid all uses of the swastika because it was used by Nazi Germany,” said Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which defends and sustains individual rights at America’s colleges and universities.

Ten killed in road collision in Chhattisgarh

Ten women including a minor girl were killed today and 27 others injured when a van carrying a marriage party overturned after colliding with a truck trailer in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district.

Police suspect that the driver of the van was in an inebriated state.

The incident occurred in the wee hours at Armur Kasa village under Dallirajhra police station limits when the matador was heading towards Dallirajhra from Bhaiyahar village, Balod Superintendent of Police Sheikh Arif Hussain told PTI.

Sensex slips below 27k level, tumbles 295 pts on F&O expiry

The benchmark BSE Sensex tanked over 295 points to slip below the 27,000-level in early trade today as participants indulged in offloading positions in view of April series expiry in the derivatives segment.

The 30-share barometer, which had lost 170.45 points in yesterday’s volatile session, dipped below the 27,000-mark by falling 295.25 points or 1.08 per cent to 26,930.68.

All the sectoral indices led by metal, IT and healthcare were trading in negative zone with losses up to 1.55 per cent.
