Gaza family ‘tricked’ into selling Banksy painting

A Palestinian man says he was tricked into selling a mural by British graffiti artist Banksy that is estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, a media report said on Wednesday.

Rabie Darduna told the BBC he was given less than $175 for the image drawn on the only remaining door of his house in Gaza.

Banksy visited Gaza in February and used the rubble as a canvas for his graffiti.

Woman arrested at airport
(Siasat News): The custom officials at RGI airport arrested a woman passenger and seized 590 grams gold from her possession. As per the details, the said woman passenger had arrived from Dubai and during the custom checking, officials found gold bangles weighing 590 grams in her possession.

When she was grilled about the recovery, she could not give a satisfactory reply. She was arrested and the gold bangles were seized. Further investigations are on.

Petrol prices cut by 49 paise per litre, diesel by Rs 1.21 a litre

Petrol price has been cut by 49 paise a litre in the national capital (including State levies) while diesel prises have been slashed by one rupees 21 paise per litre.

With this change, the price of petrol in Delhi will become Rs. 60 per litre and Diesel Rs. 48.50 per litre.

The new rates will come into effect from midnight tonight.

Earlier, the prices of petrol and diesel were revised on March 1, 2015. (ANI)

A targeted missile: Draconian anti- terror bill go green in Gujarat

Amid a walkout by the Opposition, the Gujarat Assembly passed a controversial anti-terror bill by a majority vote on Tuesday.

Rejected on three earlier occasions by two Presidents (President Kalam in 2004 and President Pratibha Patil in 2008) for violating basic principles of justice, the bill is a re-worked version of the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Bill (GUJCOC), 2003.

The bill similar to the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) was therefore passed for the fourth time in past 12 years.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today attached assets, including over a dozen bank accounts and cars, of a self-styled godman ‘Icchadhari baba’ in connection with money laundering probe against him and his associates for allegedly running a sex racket in Delhi.

The case dates back to 2010 when a Delhi police team nabbed the alleged kingpin of a flourishing sex racket in the national capital, Shiv Murat Dwivedi alias Shiva alias Rajeev alias Swami alias ‘Icchadhari baba’ when he was allegedly conducting a flesh trade deal near PVR Saket cinema along with his accomplices.

More rains in Kashmir,Jhelum recedes but fear of flood lurking

Fresh rainfall today reignited the fear of floods in Kashmir Valley though the water level in river Jhelum had receded for second consecutive day.

Rainfall which began last night and is expected to continue for next two days, can again cause surge in the water of level of River Jhelum and its tributaries, officials said.
The flood situation had started showing improvement yesterday after causing the death of 17 people.

Petrol prices cut by 49 paise/litre, diesel by Rs 1.21

After two consecutive hikes, petrol prices were today cut by 49 paise per litre and diesel by Rs 1.21 a litre on softening international oil rates.

The reduction in rates will be effective from midnight tonight.

Prices of petrol in Delhi will be Rs 60 a litre from tomorrow as against the current Rs 60.49, while diesel will cost Rs 48.50 per litre as compared with Rs 49.71 currently, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation’s largest oil company, said.

Property dealer, 2 alleged contract killers arrested

PIL seeks Rs 33 lakh compensation from Commissioner of Police

Madras High Court ordered notice to the Commissioner of Police on a PIL by Popular Front of India, charging police with having given misleading information to HC on its annual ‘unity march’ and sought a direction to register a case against him and SP,Dindigul and Rs 33 lakh compensation from the CoP for ‘loss of image, reputation and defamation.’

The compensation sought for from S George was for ‘loss of image, reputation and defamation..Which amounted to scandalous overtures’, it said.

Oil prices dip as Iran nuclear deadline approaches

Oil sank today as dealers tracked last-ditch efforts between global powers and Iran to reach a deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme and ease sanctions imposed on the key crude producer.

In late afternoon London deals, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in May slid 63 cents to USD 55.66 per barrel.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for May shed 51 cents to USD 48.17 a barrel.

“Oil prices fell further today amid concerns that talks in Iran may prove fruitful and result in the lifting of sanctions on the country’s export of oil,” said CMC Markets analyst Jasper Lawler.

Scuffle with medical students leads to hostel siege by tribals

A scuffle between students of Kalyani Medical College and boys from the nearby tribal pocket led to a over 200-strong mob of tribals gheraoing the students hostel as a big police force warded off the mob in Nadia district tonight.

A senior police officer said, trouble started after some of the hostel students playing cricket allegedly beat up some adivasi boys playing football nearby in the playground adjacent to the hostel during afternoon.

Over 6,000 employees retire in Himachal on a single day

Over 6,000 government employees, including more than 100 officers, retired here on a single day today.

The superannuated employees included Directors of Higher and Primary Education, Director of Health, over two dozen Joint Directors of various departments and three dozen employees of state secretariat.

Maximum number of about 2,500 employees, including a dozen officers, and about 600 headmasters retired from Education department while other departments with larger number of superannuating employees are Public Works, Irrigation and Public Health, and Police.

Govt allocates Rs 4,948 cr for filling strategic oil reserves

Taking advantage of lower oil prices, the government today allocated Rs 4,948 crore to full India’s maiden strategic oil reserves to insulate itself from supply disruptions.

India, which is 79 per cent dependent on imports to meet its crude oil needs, is building emergency stockpiles with millions of barrels of crude that mirror the reserves that the US and its western allies amassed after the first oil crisis of 1973 to 1974.

SDMC seals 19 properties to recover pending conversion charges

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has sealed 19 properties in the areas under its jurisdiction during the last two days to recover pending conversion or misuse charges, the civic body said.

The conversion charges are applicable in respect of residential and industrial buildings which are being used for commercial purposes. The charges are payable as per the provisions of Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) 2021, the SDMC said.

The sealing was carried out by the building department of West Zone.

Australian researchers have come up with a unique way of preventing the spread of the dengue virus, a mosquito-borne disease that currently has no approved vaccine, according to a media report on Wednesday.

The University of Melbourne-led team of researchers discovered that mosquitoes, exposed to an insect bacterium called Wolbachia, were unable to acquire the dengue virus from infected humans, Xinhua reported.
