Narine will have to undergo another test: BCCI chief Dalmiya

BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya on Wednesday said Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Sunil Narine will have to undergo another test in Chennai for his suspect illegal bowling action.

Even though Narine has been cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has barred him from playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Boy drowns in Delhi

A six-year-old boy died here on Wednesday after falling into a swampy area below water pipes, police said.

Farhan, a Class 2 student, fell while playing on the cemented pipelines of Delhi Jal Board near a bus station in Khajuri Khas in southeast Delhi, a police official said.

“The boy fell into a place where there was accumulation of water due to recent rains and the soil was moist and loose. He fell down and could not come out,” the official said.

NCMC reviews Kashmir flood situation

The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) met here on Wednesday to take stock of the flood situation in Jammu and Kashmir, an official said.

The committee reviewed the relief and rehabilitation activities being undertaken by the state authorities as well as the assistance being provided by the central government agencies, said an official statement here.

This was the NCMC’s second meeting on the issue in the past three days. The first meeting was held on March 30.

Mamata government bans Togadia from entering Bengal

The West Bengal government on Wednesday issued prohibitory orders banning the entry of VHP international vice president Praveen Togadia, saying his presence could lead to “communal tension” and disturb public tranquillity.

A press note issued by the state home department said the “prohibitory orders under section 144 of the criminal penal code” were promulgated by the respective district magistrates or police commissioners on March 31.

The note signed by Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee said the orders were issued “on the basis of information available with them”.

Petrol, diesel prices come down in Hyderabad

In order to pass on the benefits of drop in international crude oil and product prices, the public sector oil marketing companies on Wednesday cut auto fuel prices.

Therefore, petrol in Hyderabad is now cheaper by 54 paise a litre, while diesel is lower by Rs 1.35 a litre.‎ With this change, petrol prices in Hyderabad will become Rs 67.69/litre, and diesel prices will be Rs 54.86/litre. These prices will be effective from Wednesday midnight. (INN)

Lokesh to tour TS, AP from April 12

Kejriwal postpones public hearings

The public hearings held by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have been postponed for 15 days due to the ongoing renovation work at his new official residence, an official said on Wednesday.

“Due to the ongoing renovation work at his new residence in Civil Lines which is expected to be completed in 15 days, the scheduled public hearings have been postponed,” government spokesperson Nagendra Sharma said.

Kejriwal was scheduled to hold a public hearing on Wednesday at his new residence.

An Indian-origin nurse here will receive an international achievement award for her work in the healthcare sector of women and refugees, becoming the first Singaporean to get the prestigious biennial prize.

Dr Subadhra Devi Rai, a nurse and a senior lecturer at the School of Health Sciences (Nursing) at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore, will be bestowed by this year’s International Achievement Award by the Florence Nightingale International Foundation.

Palestine becomes full member of International Criminal Court

Palestine joined the International Criminal Court (ICC) with full membership on Wednesday after its accession to the Rome Statute went into force, allowing it to file cases of war crimes such as those committed in the occupied territories of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

During a ceremony held on Wednesday at the Hague Tribunal on the occasion of the accession, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki received a symbolic copy of the Rome Statute, the treaty which established the ICC, Efe news agency reported.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the resignation of its president Bangladeshi Mustafa Kamal over World Cup trophy-giving fiasco and said in a statement on Wednesday its board will decide on the vacant position at its forthcoming meeting in Dubai on April 15-16.

Woman body found from husband pyre

Body of a 50-year-old woman was found from her husband’s pyre giving rise to suspicion that she performed ‘sati’, a banned practice in India, police said today.

The incident happened in Latur district of Maharashtra, when family members went to collect her husband Tukaram’s ashes yesterday, when they found her burnt body in the pyre.

Uber driver arrested for trying to rob customer’s house

An Uber driver was arrested in the US state of Colorado for allegedly trying to rob the house of a woman customer after dropping her to the airport.

Gerald Montgomery, 51, went to the woman’s home after driving her to Denver International Airport and attempted to get in through the back door, Denver Post reported.

Investigators say the victim’s roommate was home during the burglary, which happened at around 1 pm on March 26. The roommate allegedly caught Montgomery trying to break in through the back of the home.

Pakistani court sentences seven to death in lynching case

An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan on Wednesday issued death warrants for seven individuals convicted of being part of a mob that lynched two brothers in 2010.

The court issued the warrants after the Lahore High Court rejected appeals submitted by the seven convicts, Dawn online reported.

The court also set the date of their hanging for April 8. However, the convicts have the right to appeal in the Supreme Court.

Rolls-Royce to hire 500 engineers for new Bengaluru facility

Aerospace major Rolls-Royce will hire 500 engineers by 2017 for a new facility at Bengaluru, the company announced on Wednesday.

The work done at the facility will include aerospace engineering for customers in the region as well as support for Rolls-Royce’s regional supplier base. It will also include the development of new tools and technologies that make best use of the capabilities that exist in India, the company said.

Court helps Muslim woman to live with Hindu husband

Coming to the aid of a young Muslim woman who alleged threats from her family after she married a Hindu, the Delhi High Court has allowed them to live together.

Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Ashutosh Kumar told the woman’s parents not to interfere in her personal life, saying she was over 18-years old and wanted to live with her husband.

The March 24 order came on a habeas corpus plea of the husband Akash, 21, who alleged that his wife’s parents were against their marriage and feared they might get her married to someone else.

Delhi activists demand strict law against drunk driving

A delegation of activists and victims of accidents caused by drunk driving on Wednesday called on Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and urged him to make a stringent law against drunk driving in the city.

The delegation also sought justice for the victims in terms of arresting the offenders, monetary and legal support, and proper counselling to the victims and affected families.

Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Wednesday said it was embarrassing to have a convicted minister in his cabinet and hinted that minister Francisco Pacheco could be dropped soon.

Archives and Archaeology Minister Pacheco’s conviction in a 2006 assault case has been upheld by the Supreme Court on Monday.

Asked at a media briefing at the state Secretariat if it was embarrassing to have a convicted minister in his cabinet, Parsekar said: “Obviously. It is but natural.”
