Respite for people of Kashmir; fears of flood over

Fears about Kashmir witnessing floods like last September ended today with the government declaring that there is no threat now as the water level in the river Jhelum was much below the danger mark despite overnight rainfall.

Jhelum was flowing at 14.10 feet at Sangam in south Kashmir, nearly nine feet below the danger mark, while the water level at Ram Munshi Bagh in the city was 15.25 feet, an official of the Flood Control Department said.

The rainfall overnight had resulted in the rise in water level in Jhelum but there was no immediate threat of floods, he said.

RBI should use Indian paper, ink to print currency: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the Reserve Bank to use Indian paper and ink to print currency notes and set a target date for achieving the objective as part of the ‘Make In India’ campaign.

“Today we are celebrating 80 years of RBI. Can we not fix a date…that on any specific date, whatever currency is being printed, paper will be Indian and ink will also be Indian,” he said at the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Reserve Bank.

It is ironic that the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi, who fought for swadeshi, appears on currency printed on imported paper, Modi said.

Court acquits man accused of killing Vajpayee’s grand nephew

A man accused of killing former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s grand nephew Manish Mishra by throwing him out of a running train in 2004 was today acquitted by a local court saying the witnesses turned hostile and the prosecution failed to prove the allegations.

Additional District Judge Ramesh Chandra Diwakar exonerated Ram Ji Verma of all the charges, saying that the 34 witnesses, who testified in the case, “either turned hostile or indifferent or showed ignorance”.

2 AAP leaders suspended from National Executive for backing Yadav, Bhushan

In continuing purge of dissidents, AAP has suspended two of its National Executive members from the party for attending a press conference held by rebel leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan immediately after they were expelled from the top echelons of the party.

The party sent the suspension notices to Uttar Pradesh leaders Rakesh Sinha and Vishal Sharma Lathe for openly coming out in support of Yadav and Bhushan.

Kamal was removed from ceremony after refusing to apologise

Mustafa Kamal was part of the presentation ceremony of the ICC Cricket World Cup but it was only after his allegations on the integrity of the match officials and his subsequent decision not to retract his comments which resulted in his removal from the presentation party.

Kamal, who resigned as ICC President yesterday, was in Australia ahead of the quarter-final stage as an ICC guest and was scheduled to stay in Melbourne until after the final.

Metro Iron Rod falls on Car

Accidentally an Iron rod from Metro Rail Bridge fell on a moving car at SR Nagar here on Thursday. The Car driver cum owner Amrith received minor injuries in the accident. Amrith was going to Kukatpally from Ameerpet. He alleged that the Metro Rail management has failed to respond immediately. He said that the management has responded after one hour and assured that it will compensate for the repair of damaged car glasses. (NSS)

Wife kills physically handicapped husband

A 32-year-old physically handicapped man was set ablaze allegedly by his wife in Chatrinaka police limits.

The incident took place in RN Colony of Falaknuma. According to police, the victim, V Jawahar, was allegedly set ablaze by his wife Manjula on Wednesday while he asleep. He was immediately rushed to the Osmania General Hospital where he died on Thursday.

Ill-health drives 2persons to suicide

A 50-year-old woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze allegedly due to ill-health.

According to Pahadishareef police, the deceased, K Yadamma, took the extreme step at her residence in Ambedkar Nagar Colony near Tukkuguda on Wednesday. She was admitted to the Osmania General Hospital where she died a few hours after admission.

In another case, Shiva Anand, 23, committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling at his residence in HUDA Colony on Wednesday. According to Asif Nagar police, Anand was a taxi driver and ill-health is suspected to have driven him to suicide. (INN)

Four killed in road accidents in separate cases

In separate cases, four persons were killed in different road accidents in the city.

A 40-year-old carpenter, M Prakash, died of injuries which he sustained after he was hit by an auto-rickshaw near his residence in Shanti Nagar on March 25. He was admitted to the Osmania General Hospital where he died on Thursday, according to Patencheruvu police.

The officials and staff of the AP Government should pave way for a favourable atmosphere to them to discharge their duties in T region by shifting to their capital region and offices, they demanded.

Iran, P5+1 group agree on n-deal

The P5+1 powers and Iran on Thursday announced that they reached breakthrough in the nuclear talks and a tentative deal had been achieved.

The statement was read out in a joint press conference in this Swiss city by the EU high representative, Federica Mogherini, and Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, CNN reported.

The basis for an agreement for a peaceful Iranian nuclear programme and a lifting of sanctions against Iran has been reached, Mogherini announced. “We have reached solutions on key parameters of a joint comprehensive plan of action,” she said.

76% increase in rape of minor girls in Gujarat: CAG

Gujarat has witnessed a 76 per cent rise in the number of cases of rape of minor girls between 2012 and 2013, a latest Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report has stated.

The CAG audit report on the general and social sector tabled in the Gujarat Assembly yesterday, has suggested a gradual increase in the number of minor girls raped in Gujarat. According to the CAG report, 92 minor girls were raped in 2009, 103 in 2010, 130 in 2011, 150 in 2012 and 265 in 2013, which is a 76 per cent increase over the previous year.

Advani not to address BJP meet?

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) commenced its largest strategy meet on Thursday since coming to power at the Centre, veteran leader L.k. Advani is not likely to address the national executive meet.

According to sources, the list of speakers for the meet does not include Advani’s name.

Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, however, said the process of deciding the agenda for the meet will be finalised only after the office bearers meet ends.

“The office bearers meet will decide on the content and agenda of the national executive,” he said.

Pakistan PM to visit Turkey to discuss Yemen crisis

Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will be visiting Turkey on Friday for talks on the crisis in Yemen, the foreign ministry said.

“The prime minister and the president of Turkey will exchange views on the situation relating to Yemen,” Xinhua news agency quoted a foreign ministry statement as saying on Thursday.

They will also discuss how the two countries can be helpful in addressing the issue, it said.

The decision for Sharif’s visit was taken during the prime minister’s telephonic conversation with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday.

Janata Parivar may unite on Sunday

The six parties of the erstwhile Janata Parivar will meet here on Sunday when they are likely to turn their long proposed merger into a reality, sources said.

“The issue of merger is being discussed among all those concerned for some time now. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and many others from other parties would reach Delhi on Sunday to meet Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh,” Danish Ali of Janata Dal (Secular) told IANS.

He, however, said it would entirely depend on the top leadership of the political parties involved whether to announce something on the issue on Sunday or not.
