Saudi-led coalition air-drops weapons in Yemen

Saudi-led coalition forces air dropped a load of weapons and equipment to the tribal militia allied with Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi here on Friday, a military official said.

“The military aircraft successfully dropped a load of weapons and equipment as well as medicines supplies to the paramilitary forces battling the Shiite Houthi gunmen in Aden,” Xinhua quoted the official, who was with pro-Hadi tribal militia, as saying.

BJP confident of ruling India for 10-20 years

The Bharatiya Janata Party, which stormed to power nationally last year, on Friday, expressed confidence that it will rule India for 10 to 20 years.

The meeting of the national executive of BJP, first since it came into power, started with president Amit Shah saying they have changed the polity of the country.

“This government has arrived,” Shah said to thunderous applause at the two-day meet, addressing 330 delegates including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The BJP will be in power for the next 10-20 years.”

Intelligence IG consoles injured cops

Telangana State Intelligence Inspector General Sivadhar Reddy today consoled Circle Inspector Mogulaiah and home guard Kishore in a private hospital. The duo was injured in an attack by an inter-state armed gang.

Many farmers not benefited by loan weaver scheme

Representatives of farmers approached AP Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao and urged him to waive loans, Andhra Pradesh Raithu Sangam secretary KVV Prasad has said.
In a pressnote here on Friday, Prasad stated that farmers in the JLG and Raithumithra groups were not benefited from the State governments’ loan waiver scheme even after it released second list of beneficiaries. Veteran sports journalist T N Pillay passes away

Veteran sports journalist T.N. Pillay, who has been suffering from multiple health problems for sometime, passed away on Friday morning. He was 82.

After a brief stint in film journalism, Pillay joined Deccan Chronicle as Sports Reporter in 1957 and rose to the level of Sports Editor, in which capacity he worked for over four decades. A doyen among sports journalists, many, who got training under him, are now placed in top positions on the Sports Desk of various national and regional news papers besides TV channels.

10 injured in violence during Hanuman Jayanti procession

At least 10 people suffered injuries in Madhya Pradesh’s Neemuch district when some micreants pelted stones at a religious procession being taken out on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

Police said members of a specific group hurled stones at a religious procession. Soon both sides engaged in fighting, forcing police to lob tear gas shells and cane charge to disperse the clashing crowd.

Inspector General of Police, Ujjain region, Madhu Kumar said the situation was now under control and some arrests had been effected while police were looking for yet more of the absconding miscreants.

Framework Iran n-deal may brew nuclear risk: Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that any framework agreement between Iran and the international community must recognise Israel’s right to exist.

“Israel demands that any final agreement with Iran will include a clear and unambiguous Iranian commitment of Israel’s right to exist,” the prime minister said.

“Israel will not accept an agreement which allows a country that vows to annihilate us to develop nuclear weapons,” the Israeli leader said, stressing that “I want to make it clear to all that the survival of Israel is non-negotiable”.

Ajmal back in Pakistan squad for Bangladesh tour

Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal was on Friday named in the Pakistan cricket team for all three formats for the tour of Bangladesh starting April 17.

Ajmal was not in the national squad for the World Cup as he was undergoing remedial treatment after he was banned for illegal bowling action in September last year. His action has since been cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The 37-year-old has taken 446 wickets in 209 matches in all three formats of the game.

Six militants killed in Pakistan military operation

At least six militants were killed and several injured when Pakistani security forces launched an operation in Balochistan province on Friday afternoon. The dead included two suicide bombers who blew themselves up when the forces surrounded them.

During the operation at Loralai in Balochistan, the militants opened fire at the troops and six insurgents were killed, Dawn online reported citing Frontier Corps spokesperson Khan Wasey.

Wasey said the troops recovered explosive material including detonators and suicide jackets from the hideout of the killed militants.

Top judges discuss ways to reduce backlog

A two-day conference of chief justices of the high courts on Friday began deliberations on the steps to be taken to reduce the backlog of more than three crore cases pending in courts and ensuring greater financial autonomy for the judiciary.

The conference convened by Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu also discussed the setting up of delay and arrear committees at the high court-level.
