As the global population pushes past 7 billion and more people reach old age, the number of deaths from cardiovascular diseases is on the rise. Cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of premature death in the world, include heart attacks, strokes, and other circulatory diseases. At the same time, efforts to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases appear to be working as the rise in deaths is slower than the overall growth of the population.

US defence chief to visit Asia in April, May

US Defence Secretary Ash Carter will visit Asia in April and May in an attempt to affirm defence relationship with its allies, including India, the Department of Defence announced on Friday.

Carter will visit Japan on April 8-9. During his stay in Japan, he will meet senior Japanese officials to discuss the defence strategic guidelines review ahead of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Washington at the end of April, Xinhua reported citing a statement issued by the US Department of Defence.

CCTV cams installed as per security procedures: Fabindia MD

Embarrassed by the hidden camera incident, Fabindia MD William Bissell today said CCTV cameras at its stores are installed according to standard safety and security procedures and asserted there has “never” been any incident of uncivilised behaviour by its staff.

A team of senior officials has been rushed to the coastal state to deal with the situation, he said.

“We do not have all the facts with us. Obviously any such incident creates anguish and tension. My top management will be in Goa soon. And my local staff has been fully cooperating with the police,” he told PTI.

Yemen rebels quit Aden palace, Qaeda makes gains

Saudi-led air raids drove Yemeni rebels from the presidential palace in the main southern city of Aden today as the UN reported more than 500 dead in two weeks of fighting.

The impoverished Arabian Peninsula state has sunk further into chaos since the Saudi-led coalition launched Operation Decisive Storm on March 26 to try to halt the rebel advance.

The turmoil has raised fears that Al-Qaeda will expand its foothold in the deeply tribal country, which borders oil-rich Saudi Arabia and lies near key shipping routes.

No proof that tobacco causes cancer: BJP MP

BJP MP Ram Prasad Sarmah said on Friday that there was no proof that smoking tobacco led to cancer.

The MP from Tezpur told the media here: “There is no proof that smoking tobacco leads to cancer. There has to be proof that smoking cigarette leads to cancer.

“One must prove that smoking is medically or chemically harmful to one’s health,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader referred to two of his acquaintances who he said used to smoke 60 cigarette every day and also consumed liquor, but enjoyed a healthy and long life.

“One of them is still surviving,” he said.

IAS impostor case: Academy gives clean chit to its official

The ‘impostor’ controversy at the National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie on Friday saw the institution giving a clean chit to its top official on the allegations by a woman who claimed that he was being shielded and threatened to commit suicide if she did not get justice.

The woman – Ruby Chaudhry – had claimed that she stayed at the institute with the help of a fake ID card allegedly issued by Deputy Director Saurabh Jain but he said the allegations were baseless and malicious and he will file criminal defamation case against her.

Indian couple found dead in Sri Lanka

An Indian couple was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a hotel here on Friday, prompting Sri Lankan police to launch an investigation.

The police found the bodies of a 30-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman in the hotel room in Wellawatta in the Colombo metropolitan area where they stayed after their arrival in the country on March 27.

The bodies were found after the hotel owner informed the police when the victims did not come out from the room since last night, Colombo Page reported.

No water supply to city railway stations on today

One killed, two injured in road accident

A 23-year-old MBBS student was killed and two others were injured when the car they were travelling on met with an accident on Friday morning.

According to Narsingi police, the victim, Mir Salman Ali, was travelling along with his friends, Abdul Rahman and A Nishad, in a Swift car. When they reached Outer Ring Road near ISB, the car lost control and turned turtle after hitting a road divider. They were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where Salman was declared brought dead. Rahman and Nishad are undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Financial problems drive 30yr old man to suicide

A 30-year-old man committed suicide by hanging to the ceiling allegedly due to financial problems.

According to Hayathnagar police, the deceased, M Guruva Reddy, took the extreme step at his residence in Hayathnagar on Thursday night. He was an employee of a private firm and native of Reddypalem of Guntur district. (INN)

Omani national held for trying to Marry with minor girl in Old city

The Hyderabad City Police on Friday arrested a 70-year-old Omani national on the charges of trying to marry a minor girl.

The arrest was made by the South Zone police in Kanchanbagh area. The police also arrested four others including the Qazi who was to perform the Nikah. The Oman national, Md Khamis, came to the city last week on a tourist visa and was staying in a hotel in Bandlaguda of Old City. He took the help of girl’s mother and two agents – Asim and Saif to convince the Qazi to perform the Nikah.
