Government approves enhanced punishment for bribery

The government on Wednesday approved enhancing the minimum punishment for taking or giving bribes from six months to three years and the maximum punishment from five years to seven years.

At a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the cabinet gave its approval to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 by pursuing the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, 2013, pending before the Rajya Sabha.

Sanjay Gupta will make ‘Kaante’ 2 only with Sanjay Dutt

Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Gupta says he will definitely make the sequel to his 2002 action drama “Kaante” but only with actor Sanjay Dutt.

Dutt, 55, who has been convicted for illegal possession of weapons in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast, is currently serving his sentence at Pune’s Yerwada jail .

“Of course ‘Kaante 2’ will happen, but not without Sanjay Dutt,” Gupta posted on twitter.

Polygamy increases risk of heart disease four-fold in men

Polygamy can increase the risk of heart disease by more than four-fold in men, a new study conducted in Saudi Arabia and UAE has found.

The prospective multicentre observational study examined the relationship between the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) and number of wives.

“Men who practice polygamy have up to four concurrent wives who can reside in the same or different regions but do not normally reside in the same house,” said Dr Amin Daoulah, a cardiologist at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Minor girl forced into marriage, rescued by NGO in Rajasthan

A minor girl was rescued by an NGO with the help of police after being reportedly forced into marriage by her parents in Kota district.

The 17-year-old student of class XII informed an NGO, Child Line, on Monday evening that she was being married-off forcefully to a 24-year-old youth and expressed her wish to continue her studies, Coordinator of Child Line, Dinesh Sharma said.

Police and the NGO asked her family not to solemnise the marriage but they ignored the direction and went ahead with the rituals secretly late on Monday night, Sharma said.

MCA yet to get note from BCCI on RR player approach

Mumbai Cricket Association has not received any letter from the BCCI over the reported inappropriate approach made to a Mumbai-based player playing for Rajasthan Royals by another Ranji Trophy teammate, who is not part of the ongoing IPL.

In the absence of any such communication from the Indian cricket board, MCA has decided not to conduct any internal enquiry on the contentious issue, a top MCA official told PTI today.

India to launch heavy satellite by December next year

With the successful testing of indigenous cryogenic engine, India has attained the capability of putting heavy satellites in orbit and the first one is expected to be launched by December next year, government told the Lok Sabha today.

Minister of State for Space Jitendra Singh the indigenous cyrogenic engine, which uses liquid oxygen and hydrogen as fuel, was tested successfully by ISRO yesterday.

The testing of indigenous cryogenic engine will enable India to put heavy satellites weighing upto four tonnes in the geostationary orbit, he said, amid thumping of desks.

FIR against 46 persons for submitting fake marksheets

An FIR has been lodged against 46 persons for submitting bogus physical education and graduation marksheets for seeking jobs in junior high schools in the district.

46 candidates seeking posts of part-time instructors in basic education department (BPEd) of junior high schools have been implicated, District Basic Education officer (BSA) Om Prakas Ray said, adding, the candidates had submitted fake certificates which were shown to be issued by Lucknow University.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was on Wednesday left perplexed when a court in Jodhpur asked him about his caste. After some thought, he said: “Hindu and Muslim”.

Salman Khan pleaded “not guilty” on Wednesday in an arms case being heard at the Jodhpur court.

Before recording Salman’s statement, Chief Judicial Magistrate Anupama Bijlani asked him his name, father’s name, profession and other details to mention in the court’s form.
Salman answered everything, but he got confused when the court asked about his caste.

Cabinet approves new anti-corruption bill

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a refurbished anti-corruption law, which includes seven years of maximum imprisonment in graft-related cases.

The proposed amended bill has been made more stringent and the penal provisions have been increased.

Earlier, the Act proposed only six months of minimum punishment, whereas the new bill has increased it to at least 3 years.

The bill mentions that all the corruption trials should be completed in two years and both bribe taker and giver will be held guilty.

An undocumented Indian origin-immigrant has attended the State Dinner hosted by US President Barack Obama at the White House for visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Bupendra Ram, who came to the US at the age of two from Fiji, attended the dinner along with his partner Kamala Ram.

In fact, the list of guests indicated that Ram was the only Indian-origin person to have been invited for the most sought after dinner of the town.

CISF SI held for subjecting wife to cruelty

A Bengaluru airport CISF sub-inspector was today arrested here for allegedly subjecting his wife to cruelty, saying she was not beautiful, police said.

The accused, 32-year-old Sureshkumar hailing from Salem,was booked under IPC section 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), they said.

He got married to the woman in 2011. Some two years after his son’s birth, he was transferred to Bengaluru. He then refused to take her to Bengaluru, saying she was not beautiful as per the complaint lodged with police.

Navy to commission new base near Porbandar

In view of increased threat along maritime border with Pakistan, Navy will commission a new base near Porbandar in Gujarat to strengthen surveillance and security apparatus in the region.

The new base will be named INS Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

This would be the second base on the Gujarat coast and will be commissioned by state Chief Minister Anandiben Patel and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on May 9 at Porbandar.

Haryana Agriculture Minister O P Dhankar has stoked a controversy with insensitive remarks that farmers who commit suicide are “cowards” and “criminals”, drawing severe flak from the Opposition with Rahul Gandhi raking it up in Parliament today.

“Committing suicide is a crime, according to Indian law. Any person who commits suicide escapes from his responsibilities and leaves the burden on his wife and innocent children and such people are cowards,” Dhankar, who earlier headed the BJP’s Kisan Cell, said yesterday.

Kochi Metro website hacked

The official website of Kochi MetroRail Limited was found hacked today, officials said. The hacking was detected this morning and since then thewebsite -http://www.Kochimetro.Org/ — has been down, Kochi Metro officials said.

The hackers have posted “Pakistan Zindabad” message on the website, that deals with all functions of the Kochi Metro Rail Project.

City police said they have not received any complaint sofar about hacking of website from the Kochi Metro authorities.

It was immediately not known as to who could have been behind the hacking.

Farmer hangs self over crop loss;3 die of cardiac arrest in UP

Unable to repay a loan, a 55-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his residence in Alem town of Shamli district here, police said today.

Anandpal committed suicide last night by hanging himself from ceiling of his house as he was unable to repay his loan, police said.

He took the extreme step after he received a bank notice to repay Rs 1.27 lakh but was not in a position to return it, they said.

Anandpal’s crops were damaged in the unseasonal rain and hailstorm, they said.

Police caught 5 for trying to sale plot with fake document

Jubilee hills police on Monday arrested five persons for allegedly trying to sell a plot with fake documents.
The accused are identified as Mir Mohsin Mohiuddin Ali Khan (42), Vodde Ramulu(52), Mallepaka Srihari (43), Mashetty Nagender Gupta(32), Khaja Khutubuddin(46).

The prime accused, Syed Raza Nadeem (29), resident of Darushifa, who is an advocate and the other Nisar Ahmed is on run. A case has been registered against them.
