Silverstone circuit new managing director, Patrick Allen, has backed Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel to push reigning champion Lewis Hamilton harder in order to make the racing sport more exciting and competitive in the forthcoming races ahead of July’s British Grand Prix.

Mercedes driver Hamilton maintained his dominance on the track this season too as the Briton has won three of the four races so far. Vettel, meanwhile, clinched the other victory in Malaysia.

Cabinet approves Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation, Smart Cities Mission

In a determined bid to recast the urban landscape of the country to make urban areas more livable and inclusive besides driving the economic growth, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the Central Government spending of about one lakh crore on urban development under two new urban missions over the next five years.

The Cabinet has approved the Smart Cities Mission and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation of 500 cities (AMRUT) with outlays of Rs. 48,000 crore and Rs. 50,000 crore respectively.

New technique to improve IVF success rates

There is good news for couples wanting to start a family with the help of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). A technique Taiwanese researchers have developed could facilitate selection of the most viable embryos to implant, lead to higher IVF success rates and ultimately lower its cost.

“It will lower the stress level of patients greatly, if the number of IVF cycles and embryos transferred can be reduced while maintaining a promising outcome,” said lead researcher Chihchen Chen from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan.

Multiple metabolic and genetic factors contribute to obesity, but the home is a logical place to consider in efforts to improve health, the researchers noted.

“Effects of the home environment and psychosocial factors haven’t been examined together in previous studies,” said Charles Emery, professor of psychology at the Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

NASA balloon leaks, lands in Australia

NASA’s heavy-lift balloon, which took off from Wanaka airport in New Zealand last month, has come down early over central Australia because of a suspected leak.

The 4,000 kg ‘super pressure’ balloon, which is 90 metres in diameter, was meant to stay aloft 34 km above the earth’s surface for 100 days but its flight was ended, after just 32 days, earlier this week, NASA has confirmed.

Delhi HC shifts school rape case to Crime Branch

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday transferred to the Crime Branch the case of a seven-year-old girl’s rape in a municipal school in February 2013.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw transferred the case to the Crime branch after Delhi Police submitted that the culprit could not be traced though investigation was going on in the case.

On February 28, 2013, a Class Two girl was raped inside the Magolpuri school of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Childhood bullying has worse effects on mental health: Lancet

Those who are bullied by peers in childhood are around five times more likely to experience anxiety and are nearly twice as likely to report more depression and self-harm at the age of 18 than children who are maltreated by adults, the findings showed.

The researchers compared the effects of maltreatment (by adults) and peer bullying in childhood on mental health outcomes in young adulthood.

“Until now, governments have focused their efforts and resources on family maltreatment rather than bullying,” said lead researcher Dieter Wolke from the University of Warwick in Britain.

India-Afghan ties have no expiry date: Mukherjee to Ghani

NY-based Nepalese designer raises funds for quake victims

New York-based Nepalese designer Prabal Gurung has launched a fundraiser to assist disaster relief efforts in Nepal. So far, he has managed to collect over $385,000, and he has secured support from Hollywood celebrity Kim Kardashian.

Gurung has launched a campaign specifically aimed at collecting funds to support victims of the April 25 quake, under his organisation Shikshya Foundation Nepal.

The Foundation is working with CrowdRise, one of the world’s largest community raising money for various causes.
