Oomen Chandy dismisses reports of leadership change in KPCC

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today dismissed reports relating to demand for leadership change in Kerala from a section of Congress workers. “It is all your (media) creation,” Chandy told reporters after a cabinet meeting here.

Asked about the comment of dissident KC-M MLA P C George that UDF government would not last its full term, Chandy quipped “anyone can say anything. There is no gag on anyone for making statements”.

Smriti Irani refuses to comment on appointment of Vice Chancellors by UPA govt

Government today steered clear of getting into any controversy over the appointment of some Vice Chancellors by the UPA government, saying they were selected by Search and Selection Committees and any comment on them would go against the autonomy of the universities.

During Question Hour in Lok Sabha, HRD Minister Smriti Irani defended the appointments after a BJP member questioned the selection of army and IAS officers as Vice Chancellors.

Mumbai Cricket Association has not received any letter from the BCCI over the reported inappropriate approach made to a Mumbai-based player playing for Rajasthan Royals by another Ranji Trophy teammate, who is not part of the ongoing IPL.

Double life term for rape and murder for two persons

A local court today sentenced two persons to double life imprisonment for raping and murdering a 17-year-old girl here four years ago.

The prosecution case was that Kannan alias Tamilazhakan, Ramkumar and Samiyappan had trespassed into the girl’s house on July 12, 2011, and raped and murdered her.They had also robbed the jewels of the plus-two student, who was alone at home that day.

Kannan’s wife Renuka was also arrested while allegedly trying to sell the jewels. Kannan was detained under Goondas Act, considering his previous crime record.

Seven family members drown in Mahabubnagar lake

Seven members of a family, including four young women, drowned in a lake in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana this afternoon, police said.

The incident occurred at around 1 pm when the seven persons, all belonging to Falaknuma area here had gone to Mahabubnagar and entered the lake at Mudvin village under Amangal police station limits, they said.

“All the seven bodies have been recovered. The deceased were between the age group of 18 and 40,” DSP (Shadnagar Sub-Division) Kalmeshwar told PTI over phone, adding that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Haven’t received any notice from AAP stating my expulsion: Yogendra Yadav

Ousted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Yogendra Yadav on Wednesday said that he has still not received any official notice from the party over his expulsion.

“I do want to put it on record that even after a week of the party’s announcement of our expulsion, I have yet not received any expulsion order,” said Yadav.

“In the media there is a press release, which announces it. I haven’t received any communication which says I have been expelled, which gives reasons or even says it’s the National Disciplinary Committee’s order,” he added.

The Congress party on Wednesday called for Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to sack his Agriculture Minister O.P. Dhankar after the latter remarked that ‘farmers who commit suicide are cowards’.

Obama condemns ‘senseless violence, destruction’ in Baltimore

Condemning the violence that erupted after the funeral of Freddie Gray, a black man fatally injured in police custody in Baltimore, United States President Barack Obama has reportedly criticised “a handful of people” for “senseless violence and destruction.”

While remarking that the issue was a “slow-rolling crisis” that had been going on for a long time, Obama said that the riots had distracted from the frustration over Gray’s death, reported the BBC. He added that those who looted and started fires on Monday “should be treated like criminals.”

190 IED explosions in the country in 2014

As many as 190 IED explosions have taken place in the country in 2014, including 98 blasts in Maoists-hit states, Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

“As per the data available with National Bomb Data Centre, India has witnessed 190 IED explosions in 2014 of which 61 were in Northeastern states, 98 in Left Wing Extremism affected states, 19 in Jammu and Kashmir and 12 in other parts of the country,” Minister of State for Home Haribhai Chaudhary said in a written reply.

Quake-hit Nepal at high risk of landslides in coming weeks

The threat of landslides and mudslides remains high in the earthquake-hit Nepal in the coming weeks, and the risk is likely to increase when the monsoon rains arrive this summer, scientists have warned.

The region at highest risk for landslides and mudslides is the mountainous area along the Nepal-Tibet border, north of Kathmandu and west of Mount Everest, directly above the fault rupture, according to researchers at the University of Michigan (U-M).

Apple’s aims to build ‘humanized navigation instructions’ system

Apple has filed a patent application for “humanized navigation instructions” where the navigation commands would talk to users like a real person to get around the city.

According to the Verge, the patent calls for navigation commands that mimic the way a real person would tell you to get around town, rather than dealing with an emotionless navbot that does not really care when drivers miss the next turn.

Some of the ways in which the system might talk to drivers include “exit the parking lot near AppleBees restaurant and then turn right towards Golden Ave.”

Farmer’s suicide: Delhi Police to consider testimony of all witnesses

Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi on Wednesday said that the testimony of all those who witnessed farmer Gajendra Singh’s suicide at the Jantar Mantar will be taken into consideration.

“Statement of eyewitnesses is extremely important for any criminal investigation. We are going to take into consideration the testimony of all those who have witnessed this incident and are available,” said Bassi.

Instagram scraps suggestive d**k-like aubergine emoji

As Instagram announced its decision to allow users to hashtag emojis, it has left out an emoji that was universally used as a code for penis- the aubergine.

The photo-sharing app seemed to have deciphered the innuendo that was widely associated with the emoji and feared that it could now be used to tag “dick pics” on the platform, reported The Verge.

The network said in a blog post that the new emoji hastags could be added to photos, videos and could also be searched on the Explore page.

The feature was rolled out as part of an update to the iOS and Android app . (ANI)
