Palestinian deputy PM resigns

Deputy Prime Minister of the Palestinian unity government Mohamed Mustafa, who is also the minister of national economy, resigned on Tuesday, according to Palestinian officials.

Adnan Jolani, a media advisor to Mustafa, told Xinhua news agency that the deputy prime minister submitted his resignation at the weekly meeting of the unity government’s cabinet held in Ramallah on Tuesday.

“Mustafa will release soon a clarification on the reasons behind his resignation from the unity government,” said Jolani.

South Korea are tough opponents, says Sreejesh

Indian hockey team vice-captain P.R. Sreejesh on Tuesday said their first opponent in the forthcoming 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup — South Korea — will be a hard nut to crack even if they have had the ascendancy in recent matches against their Asian rivals.

Opposition candidate leads in Nigeria presidential poll

Muhamadu Buhari, nominee of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) political party, is leading the Nigerian presidential election by two million votes over incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, after 51 percent of the votes have been counted.

So far, Buhari has garnered 8.5 million votes, while Jonathan got 6.5 million due to the low turnout in southern Christian states such as Imo and Abia, two of his major electoral bases, Efe news agency reported.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who is currently on an official visit to Japan, met that country’s foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, on Tuesday, and welcomed Japan’s initiative to strengthen bilateral ties with New Delhi.

Parikkar said Japan is a privileged partner in the ‘Make in India’ initiative, including in defence equipment and technology sector.

Parikkar said India considers its relations with Japan as very important, and added that this was evident by the fact that he had chosen Japan as the first country to visit after assuming his office.

The University of Newcastle announced on Tuesday that Xu Dong Zhang had made the discovery which has excited other researchers around the world, Xinhua news agency reported.

Zhang found that a protein known as RIP1, previously linked to natural cell death in the body, has a pro-survival function in melanoma cells.

A baby girl born with a ‘trunk’ has become the center of attraction in a village in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, as people are flocking to see her believing that she is an incarnation of Lord Ganesha.

Born on Thursday, the child has a protuberance between her two eyes which people believe resembles the trunk of Lord Ganesha.

The people from far places have swarmed the modest house of a family of labourers to get a glimpse of the ‘divine’ baby.

The baby’s aunt, Rajani, said the people were not even shying from making offerings to the baby like they would in front of an idol.

Singapore police said today they have arrested a teenage boy who posted an expletive-laden video on YouTube attacking Christianity and the country’s late founding leader Lee Kuan Yew, but the exact charges were unclear.

“In response to media queries, the police confirm that a 17-year-old male Singaporean was arrested in relation to the case. Police investigations are ongoing,” a Singapore Police Force statement said late Monday, without providing further details.

Rajnath visits Bangladesh border, talks to enclave dwellers

A day after the NIA claimed that the terrorists involved in the Burdwan blast had conspired to overthrow the government in Bangladesh, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday visited the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal.

Visits to the border outposts in Cooch Behar district and the Tin Bigha corridor as well as the border enclaves were on the itinerary of Rajnath Singh during his two-day tour of the state.

He met enclave dwellers in Cooch Behar on Tuesday.

Pakistan evacuates 500 stranded citizens from Yemen

Over 500 Pakistanis, including 116 children, have been evacuated from war-torn Yemen by a special Pakistan International Airlines flight.

The PIA flight carrying the stranded Pakistani nationals touched down at the Karachi airport late last night with 326 of the 502 evacuees than being put on flights to Islamabad.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had ordered authorities to evacuate over 3,000 Pakistanis stranded in Yemen after security situation worsened in the Gulf country.

A 4-year-old girl in the US has grabbed media headlines when she slipped out of her house in the middle of the night and boarded a bus in search of a sugary slushie, a flavored frozen drink.

A man spotted the wandering child on the sidewalk in Philadelphia and flagged down a bus.

The strawberry blond girl, dressed in a purple raincoat and pajama pants, surprised passengers and the bus driver when she climbed aboard the early morning ride. Surveillance video showed the little girl hop up the steps as bewildered passengers quiz her about her plans.

Andhra CM to distribute health card to journalists

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will distribute Aryogya Sri Card (health card) to journalists in Tirupati on April 6.

State Health Minister K Srinivas said here on Monday that the chief minister will distribute Arogya Sri cards to scribes in Tirupati on April 6.

All steps have been taken to give away the cards to eligible journalists in the state, he said while addressing a gathering.

Kuwait opens Syria donor conference with $500-mn pledge

Kuwaiti Emir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah kicked off Kuwait III, the Third International Pledging Humanitarian Conference for Syria, on Tuesday with a more than 465 million-euro ($500 million) donation in financial assistance, urging the UN to put an end to the war in Syria.

Al-Sabah, who co-chairs the fund-raiser with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, invited participants to show their generosity to the suffering Syrian people, Efe news agency reported.

Top Ugandan state prosecutor involved in trial of al-Shabab bomb attack shot dead

Top Ugandan state prosecutor Joan Kagezi involved in the trial of 13 men who allegedly conducted a deadly al-Shabab bomb attack, has been shot dead in the capital city, Kampala.

According to BBC, Kagezi was shot dead on a motorcycle by gunmen on her way home.

In 2010, the suicide bomb attack in Kampala had killed 76 people as they watched the football World Cup final.

Security of Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been upgraded to topmost Z-plus category and he will be guarded by paramilitary commandos drawn from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) now.

The move to increase Jaitley’s security cover was taken by Union Home Ministry recently after assessing the threat perception of VVIPs.

A Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, Jaitley will have a pilot and an escort car accompanying him besides two Personal Security Officers armed with automatic weapons seated next to him in the vehicle he is travelling.

Calls offering crores were made with Kejriwal’s consent: Garg

Former AAP MLA Rajesh Garg, whom the party had recently suspended, today alleged that calls with the “consent” of Arvind Kejriwal were made to him and several other leaders offering them crores to support BJP.

Garg claimed that police had arrested a person on his complaint of receiving fake calls from Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s office offering him Rs 10 crore, who was later released on AAP’s intervention.

Islamic State (IS) militants have tweeted pictures of a military “graduating class” which show dozens of foreign fighters with masks, fatigues and AK-47s who are now ready to advance to killing in the name of IS’ ideology.

According to Fox News, the graduation pictures mark the 18 months of training in weaponry and ideology at a university in Deir Az-Zour in northern Syria.

Winston Churchill still owes India’s Bangalore Club 13 rupees in unpaid bills

Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill still figures on the list of defaulters of the exclusive Bangalore Club in south India as he owes the club 13 rupees in unpaid bills.

An entry, dating back to June 1899, in the club’s ledger book listed “Lt WLS Churchill” as one of 17 defaulters, reported the BBC.

Churchill arrived in Bangalore in 1896 as a young army officer and left three years later to fight in the North-West Frontier, now known as Pakistan.

The exclusive club was founded by a group of British officers in 1868.

SC rejects Jat students’ petition for reservation in medical, dental colleges

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the plea of students belonging to the Jat community seeking reservation in admission to post graduate medical and dental courses.

As per reports, the apex court said that at the time of All India counselling, these Jat students were treated as OBCs.

The Supreme Court had earlier stated that caste cannot be the sole ground for reservation and quashed the Jat notification of the reservation bill.

The former UPA Government had announced reservation for Jats in 2014 by including them in the OBC category on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections.

Two more arrested in 13/7 Mumbai serial blast case

The Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) on Monday arrested two alleged associates of top Indian Mujahideen operative Yasin Bhatkal in connection with the 2011 serial blasts in the metropolis.

ATS took custody of Sayyed Ismail Afaq Lanka (36) and Saddam Hussain Fairoz Khan (28) — residents of Bhatkal in Karnataka — from Bengaluru Police.

The duo is suspected to have provided explosive materials to Yasin to carry out blasts across the country, including the 2011 bombings here, it said.
