Jagmohan Dalmiya set to return as BCCI president

Jagmohan Dalmiya is set to return as the Board of Control for Cricket in India president after other candidates for the post pulled out ahead of the body’s annual general meeting on Monday.

According to reports, Dalmiya’s road to the post was cleared after another former BCCI president, Sharad Pawar, failed to gain a proposer from the East Zone, whose turn it is to nominate the president.

Nitish Kumar to fast against land acquisition bill

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday announced a one-day fast — and asked people across the state to join him — in protest against the land acquisition amendment bill.

Nitish Kumar asked people to put pressure on the Narendra Modi government to withdraw the relevant bill. He, however, did not announce the date of the fast.

“I appeal to the people to join a one-day fast to protest against the land acquisition amendment bill,” the Janata Dal-United leader said while addressing thousands of party workers at the Gandhi Maidan here.

Rajnath praises BJP-PDP alliance, keeps mum on Sayeed’s separatist statement

Union of Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday applauded the alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) and the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP), adding that this is the first time that his party has been instrumental in forming the government in J-K.

I believe whatever problems the J-K people are facing, this government will be able to solve them,” said Rajnath Singh.

He added that the two political parties have formed a government in J-K based on the Common Minimum Program.

Warrant issued to search Khaleda’s office

A Dhaka court on Sunday issued a warrant to search the office of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia after police said there could be explosives and fugitives harboured there.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate S.M. Masud Zaman issued the search warrant. Police asked for the warrant after the bombing in Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan’s procession in Gulshan on February 16, bdnews24.com reported.

The issuance of the warrant was kept under wraps. Dhaka police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Anisur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Cash subsidy to LPG consumers has stopped leakages: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the landmark scheme to give LPG consumers cash subsidy instead of selling to them below market priced cooking gas has stopped leakages, saving thousands of crores of rupees.

The use of technology has helped transfer of cash subsidy to the actual users of the cooking fuel, he said at a Nasscom event.

“My estimate is that at least 10 per cent of the leakages has been stopped, saving thousands of crore of rupees,” he said.

26-year old woman drugged, raped in UP

A 26-year old woman has allegedly been drugged and gangraped in the Muzzaffarnagar area of Uttar Pradesh.

According to reports, the victim had gone to a gift shop yesterday, where she was offered a sedative-laden cold drink by the shop’s owner. After the victim fainted, the shop owner, along with four others, raped her.

The victim, in her complaint, has reportedly stated that she was threatened of ‘dire consequences’ by the perpetrators if she revealed the incident to anyone.

One of the accused is said to be the son of a sub-inspector in Muzaffarnagar.

FIR filed against Digvijay Singh for irregular appointments

An FIR lodged by the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Secretariat at the Jehangirabad police station here has named former chief minister Digvijay Singh and 18 others in connection with alleged irregularities with in appointments.

According to reports, the Congress party has termed the filing of the FIR as a ‘vendetta’ against Singh and questioned the lodging of the complaint 12 years after the matter was concluded.

Singh had been chief minister of Maharashtra from December 7, 1993 to December 8, 2003. (ANI)

Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday hailed the alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the People’s Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir, calling their union a ‘historic’ event.

“With good governance, the BJP and PDP will solve problems of people in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh,” Naqvi told ANI.

Durban to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

South African city Durban is set to be the host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) as the lone contender for the quadrennial, 71-member multisport event.

The 600-page bid book will be handed to Commonwealth Games Federation officials during a brief mid-day ceremony on Monday at the official residence of the London Lord Mayor, reports Xinhua.

South Africa has proposed a 12-day Games starting from July 18, birthday of late president Nelson Mandela.

Canadian city Edmonton also wanted to play host to the 2022 Games, but withdrew due to financial constraints.

Fuel price hike unacceptable: CPI-M

The increase in prices of petrol and diesel is unacceptable, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) said Sunday, as it called for protests against the hike.

It said in a statement that the prices were hiked by over Rs.3 a litre, “hours after the union budget imposing greater burdens on the people was presented” in parliament Saturday.

“This is the second hike in the prices of petrol and diesel this month. The government, instead of reducing the excise duty, is passing the burdens on to the people.

“This increase in prices of petrol and diesel is unacceptable.”

Government urges opposition to back land act amendment

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu Sunday appealed to all political parties to help pass the bill amending the Land Acquisition Act 2013 in the larger national interest.

Include women in peace talks, Kabul told

Afghanistan’s new government should commit to including women on the negotiating team for any future peace talks with the Taliban, Human Rights Watch said Sunday.

On February 24, Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said that peace talks would begin “within weeks” but declined to provide any additional details.

These would be the first negotiations since the government of President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah assumed office in September 2014.

‘Talks, not issues can solve issues’: Mufti Mohammad Sayeed

Newly elected Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Sunday called for a peaceful dialogue in order to end the violence in the Valley, adding that bullets would never help the state achieve freedom from strife.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken note of the innocents dying in the state. Those who were involved in fake encounter have been put to task.
